Kansas City Downtown Airport/Suggestions

I moved to Kansas City in August to attend law school, and up until this point it has just been easier to ride on the indoor trainer [I can get some of my reading in while also getting my work out in]. However, with the season upon us, and finals complete in a couple of weeks, I am looking for a good place to ride outdoors.
I have driven past the Downtown Airport twice in the past week, and both times I have noticed numerous cyclists out there riding. I was wondering if anybody had experience riding in this location, and if so could tell me where is a good place to start, which route you would suggest [if multiple], etc...
Likewise, if anybody has any other suggestions of good places to ride, let me know. Any help would be much appreciated.

A lot of guys head west in Kansas.......low traffic roads......nice hills.....95th street west...meandering towards Lawrence. If you are looking for a group, I'd suggest contacting the local bike shops which all have rides or consider contacting local tri coaches. The good ones have organized rides and welcome newcomers.

There are a lot of people that like to go ride at the downtown airport. There isn't really any route, what they do is go and park at the downtown airport and then ride loops around the perimeter of the airport. This is a good spot if you want to try doing a short time trial or power test. The airport is pretty flat, low on car traffic (but last year someone did get hit) so that is also why it is popular.
There are a lot of good places to go ride in Kansas City, the exception is probably Downtown.
There are a lot of people (cyclist's & triathlete's) that ride is Johnson County. I would suggest you consider heading out that way sometime. A good starting point might be 143rd & Mission and riding south on Mission until 199th St. from there you can take 199th west all the way to Edgerton, KS if you like. You can also go further south past 199th, but would suggest you cut over to Metcalf for going south of 199th. Lots of riders at 199th will also head east toward Peculiar, MO.
On the west side, there is Shawnee Mission Park that you can go over to ride in, it's good for hills if you want to make some loops. There is plenty of other places to ride west of 435 on the Kansas side. The other guy "Weaver" that responded earlier would know that side of town better.
On the Missouri side I ride with guys in Lee's Summit and we head as far east as Lexington, as far south as Harrisonville. This weekend we are riding from Lee's Summit to Odessa and back on a very hilly course ( around 60 miles round trip).
I might suggest you look up the Google group tri2ridewithus these guys are a mix of triathletes & roadies that ride around the 143rd & Mission area. Most rides are 19-20+ mph avg. for 60 miles.
I know there is good riding up north (Parkville area), but I don't ride up that way, you will have to get someone else to help you out with that. That might also be your best option if you are riding out of downtown.
Hard part about being in downtown KC is you will probably find yourself loading up your bike to get out of the city to go for a ride.
Hope this helps.

That does help, I assumed somewhere out west would be good, but I was just not sure where would be a good place to start.
Thank you
