DeSoto shorts: how much compression? Quote | Reply

I tried on some De Soto tri shorts and the leg bands above the knee were fairly tight. Not uncomfortable, but tighter than I'm used to.

Is this similar to other's experiences? Is this compression actually a good thing?

I'm 6'0", 165 lbs, and I tried on a medium.

And also, what exactly is Liftfoil?

Either I'm crazy, or it's not actually explained anywhere on the De Soto site. Crazy

Yes they are tight on my thighs too . By far the best fitting tri shorts I have ever used. I've done 1 race and numerous rides/bricks with them and haven't had any issues with them being too tight.

I wear Forza Riviera in M (5'11" 165lbs) & love them. I have bigger thighs, and the shorts are pretty tight, especially around the lower band, but I love it. They stay put, and feel great when fatigued.

I'm 6 foot 1+ inches and 174. The large four pocket DeSoto shorts fit me perfectly. I was "thicker" (and heavier overall) in the thighs two years ago and had initial concerns about the trishort thighs being too tight but not now.

IME, the Compressor strip at the bottom of the legs is pretty snug on the Forza shorts (regular & Riviera) . And, I've found that the stitching that attaches the Compressor strip to the rest of the shorts is much tighter on the Riviera shorts than the regular Forza shorts. (It actually creates some "pucker" on me.) Because of this, I prefer the regular Forza shorts. The good news is that stitching does loosen up just a bit with use (resulting in less "pucker).

Thanks everyone.

Can anyone explain liftfoil, and whether I want it if I'm doing almost exclusively wetsuit legal races?

"Tri Short with Liftfoil" is the same price as the regular "Tri Short" but it says, "2012 Now Here with Liftfoil center panel for improved comfort and durability!" What's the down side?

Hello Matto,

I think I am probably the most qualified person to respond to these questions.

Click on this link to take you to the Fabric Facts that talks about Liftfoil™. You will need to scroll down a bit on that link.

Simply put we added this fabric in the center for a number of reasons:

1. To improve the durability. Yes, this fabric is more durable, which important in an area where you will rubbing against a saddle and where some people's thighs rub together.
2. To keep the modesty panel, well, modest. This fabric is not diaphanous at all (meaning not see-through). Something we all appreciate not involuntarily seeing on others.
3. To make this trishort faster in non-wetsuit races. Liftfoil™ is our swimskin fabric. The addition of these panels on the front and back makes this trishort faster, and had no adverse affects when worn with a wetsuit.

As for the snug sensation on the trishorts you tried on, please remember that with De Soto products, you want them to be snug. Also the tightest our products will ever feel is the first time you try them on.

Please let me know If I can answer any other questions for you.

Thanks Emilio!

So what would be the scenario where I would want the non-Liftfoil version of the Tri Short?

Also, I can't decide between the normal vs Low-cut version of the Tri short and no one around me has them to try on. It's fine to order both and return whichever I like least?

At this point, get the Liftfoil version as this is replacing the other as we speak.

As for the low cut and regular, You are welcome to buy both, try them on, keep the one you want, and return the one you do not. We will then simply credit your card. We do this all the time.

You are going to love this short.

go for the low cut. Last year I mistakenly ordered the low cut shorts and absolutely love training/racing in them. I now find mysef rolling down the waistband on my normal cut shorts now.

Thanks all!

I ordered both the low-cut and the normal cut. I'll see which one works best on me. Remember girls and boys... crack kills.

I have the Forza Riviera Tri short, and they are cut much lower than any other tri/bike shorts I have worn. I was slightly unnerved by this ar first, but after wearing them I would never go back to a higher rise short. They are not so low that your crack shows; just low enough to be out of the way when in aero position. The pad is also extremely comfortable. All in all, the best tri or bike shorts I have ever owned. I will never wear anything else.

I love the short, and also the Polypro Thermal Jersey that I added in based on the sale. That thing is awesome!

I also got the "Forza Tri Jersey with Skin Cooler" It fits well, but I'm wondering about the aerodynamics of it. It's a little mesh-like. Maybe I'm being silly, but I'm wondering if this is less aerodynamic than other fabrics you might have? Is this an silly concern?

As evidence of the difficulty manufacturer's face with body types, my legs are very skinny. Almost all my weight is up top, so the DeSoto shorts could be even tighter for me. Particularly at the bottom of the quad! 6'0", 158 today.

It is no less aero than other fabrics. Especially at the speeds that a human can ride a bike.
