Someone or some strange group is in you neighborhood. Have you or would you follow and keep an eye on them, maybe even call the police?
And, I don't mean follow and shoot or even confront (unless confronting is absolutely necessary).

Ha! That's probably true in just about any neighborhood, too.
To the OP, probably not, unless I was carrying a lethal weapon, and the person I was tracking posed less of a threat to me than I would to him.

Last month, I spent a week down in Sarasota, FL visiting my parents who now spend about 3 months each winter living in a rented condo in a semi-retirement community. I advised my parents to notify their neighbors about my arrival. Between the tattoos and the funny clothing, I really was worried one of them would call the police when I starting "lurking" around. ;-)

I've done it before. I used to live on a dead-end street with a bunch of elderly/retired neighbors. I felt it was kind of my duty to keep an eye out for everyone.

I probably wouldn't unless they were doing something that appeared threatening.
Then again, I am very non-confrontational.

I would call the police. If I were concerned enough to call the police I would not follow on foot whether I had a gun or not. I would follow as best I could from the relative safety of my car.

I would and I have a number of times. Over the years I have lived in several nice apartment or townhouse communities. I spent a lot of time outdoors and my home office looked out onto the parking lot so I had a good idea of what goes on in the community at all times of day. I can think of 3-4 times that I called the cops to report a suspicious person(s).
In one community, we suspected one of the townhomes was a place for dealing and maybe even cooking. One day around 1 pm, I saw two dudes that didn't look like they belonged carrying groceries across the complex (no car, no store close by). I walked about 300m behind them, minding my own business and saw them walk into the suspected house. They came out five minutes, saw me and took off running. I called the cops. Drug bust an hour later.
When I live in NC, I was doing laundry one night at the apartment facility and saw a car that looked like it was casing the clubhouse. Guys were looking in the clubhouse at 11 pm. I walked to the facility and wrote down the tag #. 20 minutes later I hear glass shatter. I run outside to see the car speeding away. I stopped a resident that pulled into the complex and asked which way they went. Called the cops and 30 minutes later was taken to another apt complex to ID the vehicle and suspects.
Just last week, a large truck backed into my neighbors driveway. We don't know the older couple other than just waving and saying hi. But I knew that I hadn't seen either of them in several days. I walked into my backyard and watched a guy (later learned it was their son) go into the house. I was about to call the cops but intuition told me that if was a criminal my presence (you know, skinny white dude) should naturally scare them off. He saw me watching him go into the house.
I would probably never confront a suspicious person(s) but I will watch from a far long enough to make an informed decision as to whether the cops need to be called.

I completely agree with this. I would do the same. We pay a lot of money in taxes to have professionals in place to handle these very types of situations.

Not something I have to worry about. I got people to take care of that for me ;-)
I live in a very small suburb and we have our own public safety force. We have the perfect combination of a big public safety budget and virtually no crime. So, if you call the cops to report your neighbor did not take their trash cans in by 6 pm on trash day, they are so bored that they'll send a cruiser over within 15 minutes and the cop more than likely takes the trash cans into the garage himself. If someone strange was reported in the neighborhood, they'd have a car checking it out in less than 2 minutes. Around here, if someone called it in, Trayvon would have been confronted by the cops, they would have quickly figured out he was no trouble then offered him a ride to his friend's house, all before Zimmerman had time to get out of his truck.

We have had a few burglaries in our neighborhood over the last 10 years. If I saw someone in my neighborhood who I didn't think belonged - I would definitely investigate and probably follow them in my car. If they're up to no good, being aware that they were being followed would probably be enough to run them off. If nothing else, it serves to get a description and maybe a license tag.
A couple of years ago my neighbor noticed a beater car driving slowly down our road. He called his brother-in-law who is a sheriff's deputy and he came over to investigate. The guy lived in the next neighborhood - but was a convicted sex offender.
I don't think that it would be strange for Zimmerman to follow someone he didn't recognize who matched a profile of people who had committed 8 burglaries (IIRC). Especially since he was neighborhood watch captain. The fact that he constantly called 911 shows that he preferred to leave it in the hands of the police, but that apprently wasn't enough to stop the burglaries, so he probably started keeping a close eye out
I know that it really bothered me when some guys broke into my neighbor's house (who also was best man in my wedding). For months afterward, I paid attention to every car that drove down our street. I didn't want my home broken into, or anyone elses.

The few houses that were foreclosed on or people having to moved has put a few people who don't fit in our neighborhood as renters. So there are a lot of people now living in the neighborhood that would have bean suspicous 4 years ago. So the threshold is high. But I have called the cops when activity looked out fo the norm. Like a group of 5 thug looking people gathering on a street corner outside my house. If not for the police to look into suspicous activity, to send a message that eyes are on them and certain behavior will attract unwanted attention. But I wouldn't confront them. One night when running I saw a lone man in standing next to his car in a dark undeveloped corner of the neighborhood. I just looked at him and made eye contact as I passed by running and if he was still there when I finished, it was my intention to call the police. But somebody or they (the police) beat me to it. So yes, I would observe and report. But not intervene unless I saw an actual crime taking place like my neighbors kid getting jumped, punks checking car door locks, an actual break in (even then I might let the cops handle it unless I stumble upon it and made contact with the burglar not by choice). Personally I having dealt with the aftermath of being involved in a couple crimes as a victim and a witness, as well coming close to being shot myself on a couple of occasions for getting involved, the desire to experience all of that really isn't there. This whole Martin/Zimmerman case has been a stark reminder.

We live in the mountains with about 9 houses on a 2 mile road. Had a neighbor call me not long ago and told me to keep a look out for kids on 4 wheelers. Seems a woman and two kids were scouting houses and would contact someone in a van. They would pull up to a house with no one home and steal any exposed copper. My neighbor saw a guy crawling out from under a house and chased him but he got away. He didn't get the copper but he did a lot of damage to the plumbing. They were caught a week or so later. They were living about 10 miles away in a rental. In my neck of the woods neighbors will let you know of anything or anybody out of the ordinary, including strange cars coming to or leaving your house. We don't usually see people that are not from the area messing around up here much. Not conducive to their health usually.

I would call the police and depending on the situation perhaps follow from a distance. Interestingly this just happened to my neighbor. He followed someone suspicious, saw them break into a house, watched them take goods and put them in their car. He won the phone with the police the entire time. The cops caught the people down the road with the stolen goods in their car and amazingly after something like 2 years they are still free. There was some technicality I can't quite remember that is keeping them from being able to admit the stolen goods as evidence. It didn't matter at all that my neighbor witnessed the event. He ended up winning an award from the police for his diligence which is proudly hanging on the wall of his business.

Fuck yes I would. You have a general sense of who does and doesn't belong assuming you aren't one of those people who isolates yourself from your neighbors. Eitherway, I don't want my neighborhood to be a staging ground for a fight or intimidation. Growing up where I did, I know it when I see. I also just assume it never happen to begin with. I have no problem calling the cops to send a message to potential trouble makers. We've had 5 break ins in the last couple of months. One while the family was home. So police have increased their presence as it is, and have no problem with coming to talk to potential trouble makers. The key is prevent it before it becomes a problem or else everybody will soon be on edge and you get armed watchmen patrolling your neighborhood and kids getting killed. Go to a ghetto or innercity neighborhood one day. You will quickly find out what happens when a community stops calilng the police when suspicious behavior occurs or they "stop snitching". I'm not going to watch my neighborhood become like that.

I think everyone has a different threshhold depending upon the circumstances. But, no, I don't think a bunch of people are calling the police every time they something out of the ordinary. I took the question, as I am sure others did, to be if you saw something strange enough to concern you, would you follow them, call the police, etc.?

I'm not sure it's nuts. I wouldn't call the cops just because a stranger is on my street. If, on the other hand, my neighborhood is averaging a burglary every month or something, and I see someone acting in a manner I think is suspicious, I think I'd call the cops, yes.
You really wouldn't?

No. He and his wife would blame Gov Scott Walker and protest at the Wisconsin State Capital instead ...

Well, the annual Turkey Trot starts less than 1/4mi from my doorstep and attracts about 5000 participants, so I'd have to say that I follow and keep an eye on a lot of strange people every Thanksgiving. :)

Doesn't sound like it, does it?. Maybe he's only concerned with his house, the neighbors can fend for themselves. However, if they were scoping his house, he would be standing in the corner of his garage armed with a bicycle pump. :)
I guess maybe he's making a distinction between someone who is a stranger and someone who is suspicious - that's fair enough.
