haha. I'll be there. Sounds like a great event! First OLY distance ever... Can't wait for that boat start! Any idea on the bike course? I heard its flat (obviously for being on TX coast) but is it usually a crosswind? or headwind/tailwind?.. Does the run have a lot of turns?

usually massive head winds going out on the bike, and lots of turns on the run, yes.

On the waitlist for the oly so if anybody is having second thoughts, I'd be glad to take your spot.

I'll be out there. This is my third year in Houston, but somehow the first time I've done Kemah. I've been impressed with OnUrMark's other races, so my expectations are high!

Of course, based on Kona Eastside last weekend, my early season expectations for myself are pretty modest...

I've done this one every year (well it's only two yrs old), the boat start is truly a hoot, if you're going, check the tides, you could end up coming ashore at the roller coaster, x2 on the wind, and save some for the run, that bridge looks much bigger at the end of the run.

This is my first oly of the season and only 3rd ever so I doubt there will be dream crushing haha. Thanks for all the info on the course/conditions. I am also excited for the boat start and I'm sure it will be a great race because the bridgeland tri was very good last year.
What AG will everyone be in? 20-24 here.

hahaha! yeah, basically... no man.. that is kind of like a trap of a question.. especially on here. I could throw out my exact number that I have in my head... but then what If I don't hit it... not only will I be pissed, but all of ST can look it up and wear me out about it. haha... All you should know is that if times stay like they have the past 2 years ( I doubt they will with this be a qualifier now)... I should be somewhere in the top 5 A.G. for sure.. Just really depends how I'm feeling and how my open water swim goes... (never swam in a wetsuit before!! uh oh! haha)

Heard a rumor that ddalzell has a nice shiny new bike that not only looks fast but moves fairly fast as well. Hope he brings his A game and lays the hammer down. That kids gonna be tough!

haha ^^ training buddy... didn't know you were on here big guy! He is also doing kemah, but the sprint distance... we couldn't get him in to the OLY (sold out)....

Don't listen to his comments! You won't have to worry about me at all. I'll probably either drown, fall off my bike, or trip over the timing mat leaving transition! :)

Honestly though, are you a sub 25 swimmer? Maybe we can use each other in the water and open up a gap over the middle of the pack group.

eh, remember unless you're in the elite wave, there won't be munch of a pack since you go 3 or 4 at a time.

Re: Kemah Triathlon, Who's in? [jasondubose] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

How do they determine when you go with the time trial start? I'll throw my numbers out there so hopefully it motivates me to go faster so I don't get bashed haha. I really want to get under 2:15, depending on transitions I feel sub 2:10 is possible, but I'll go with a goal of 2:12.
For splits I'm hoping for 24ish, 64ish, 39ish. The ish should same me from getting bashed right because just like most on here I'll go 18, 55, 31

Can you explain how this works? I had assumed wave starts off the barge. As a slower swimmer I usually plan on sitting on a fast swimmers feet through the swim...this might throw a kink that strategy.

BTW, saw your name on the results from this past weekend. I'm glad I aged out of the M25-29 AG this year. For whatever reason the 30-34 AG seems to be slightly less competitive in Houston!

Re: Kemah Triathlon, Who's in? [wempe] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

well the swim could be different this year, but i swam 24:02 last year and was 2nd out of the water for my age group, and 1st was 22.5min

And if i remember correctly you basically just line up and they let 3 or 4 jump off a platform every 5 seconds or so.

Re: Kemah Triathlon, Who's in? [AMT04] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

if i remember correctly, there's no ordering to it, you just kind of file in... so not quite as cool as the pro or elite waves. but i do remember all the fish were trying to find their way to the front last year, Here's the algorithm for success:

1) move up to the front of the line
2) find the guys who resemble any of these:
wearing swedish goggles
talking about their high school or college swimming career,
doing that lat-pop thing with their biceps
in general being too serious about the swim start
3) convince them they need to blow up the swim and how awesome they're gonna be
4) draft :)

And yeah, that was such a great race for me, other than a guy running 5:40/mi passing me for 3rd in the last quarter mile. I tried to "surge" past him at the end and i'm pretty sure he laughed in his head as he repassed me... I just looked up the results... you top 3 30-34 guys are no joke! Good luck at kemah!

We were organized by our AG at the start but there were three lines or so that ended up merging together as you jumped off the boat.

Not doing Kemah this year. I did it the first two years. I did Texas 70.3 on April 1 and I'm doing NOLA 70.3 on April 22 so my body will need a break. Great race and I'm bummed I'm going to miss it this year.
