1st spin class - clothing?
Quote

Reply
OK..not here to debate the merits of spin class vs being on the road --
I'm dropping in to my first spin class -- plan was to wear bike shorts and a loose/baggy dri fit shirt -- will that work without making me look like more of a dork than I am??
..by the way, this is at a city facility -- pedals with toe cages - so I'll throw on a pair of workout/running shoes and not even begin to think about cycling shoes...
Thanks all!

It is always wear what you want in our spin class. Road guy tend more toward road stuff, MTBers toward MTB stuff, fitness people just come over with what they have on. Everyone seems happy.

What you are planning is pretty much what I wore when I was teaching. As for the pedals check if they are SPD cleat compatible. I got some cleats for an old pair of mtn bike shoes. Works much better and is more comfy than running shoes. Don't forget a towel and water bottle.

I wear just what you said. Bibs and a running shirt with my mtb shoes. I think most id the pedals for spinning have spd on one side and cages on the other.

I would wear bibs because it doesn't look as weird when you end up taking off your jersey. And believe me, no spin class has half the wind that your pain cave boasts. I swear, all the weight those people lose is from sweat. It's really, really hot.
When I used to go, I'd wear a bib, jersey (usually discarded) and my shoes with SPD cleats.
Have fun! It's not something to work on your bike fitness, IMO. It's just a good time with friends.
If you don't have friends in the class... why are you going?

Start off with that, but once you get a feel you can wear just about anything.
I moved to a one-piece trisuit, because it was cooler and more comfortable. Also less laundry and I have more trisuits than bibshorts.
99.999% of bikes have SPD. A few have Look.
For a longer class(1 1/2 hours or more) a lot of times you can replace the pedals and the seat. The rules and the instructor tolerance to this vary.
Swim - Bike - Run the rest is just clothing changes.

Someone else already mentioned it but I'll back it up about pedals. Clips on one side, spd on the other. If you have shoes with spd cleats, wear them! It's much nicer to have a stable platform to crank away.

If you really want to stand out, do what I did the first day: bring your own pedals and swap them with whatever they have on the bike.

Despite a fairly mild winter - I was not very good about getting out this winter on the bike. I would hit two spin classes
a week and an mellow session on the trainer. I expected to be a disaster once I headed out on the road again - but
surprisingly my fitness is pretty good with better power numbers than last fall. Times are not so great because I had an EXCELLENT
holiday buffet season.
Apparently something about a girl shouting 'harder' for an hour can build fitness...
I definitely work harder in a group than I will on my own in the basement. I'm not saying it is the best for everybody -
but it can be a pretty good interval session.

There's absolutely no reason to wear spandex in a spin class, nor padded bike shorts, except vanity or to show that you're a Serious Cyclist. There's no wind resistance, the saddles are soft, and there are no bumps or potholes. Just wear regular gym clothes (with cycling shoes if you prefer).

i'm sure that will work fine....you're most likely going to sweat a lot, so be sure the shirt wicks moisture well, also grab a towel or two to wipe yourself off during and after ride, and bring a bottle to drink

So why don't they put them on road bikes and tri bikes? Seriously. I would say that the front of the seats are so wide that I do have issues with chafing if I wear running shorts

This. The gym we go to has power readouts (they are not worth a crap because they are not calibrated, but that is another story). The saddles are wide but they are not soft and comfy. When I wore my Nike Tempo shorts I spent the better part of the class yanking my shorts down so I would not chafe against the bike saddle. No thanks.
I will wear cycling shorts and a t-shirt that wicks. No need for a jersey.
At 6 a.m. no one cares what I wear...hell no one cares what I wear anyway.

I agree, I always laugh inside when I see someone in bike shorts on a spin bike, those saddles are so soft compared to your road bike! If you've never been on a road bike at least wear some baggy shorts over the bike shorts so noone knows your a rookie :-)
EDIT: Thats my experience with 24hr fitness bikes, comfy seats, maybe other gyms are different.

I've found the opposite, after years spent on a tiny piece of carbon/plastic, an hour spent riding some gigantic foam rubber "seat" is miserable to me.
My outfit was always a pair of cycling shorts under running shorts and a tech t. Yeah, the shorts are just for looks, but its worth saving the last shred of dignity I have at the gym.
