Where to ocean swim in Hilo? Quote | Reply

Am on layover in Hilo. At the Hilo Hawaiian overlooking Hilo Bay and Coconut Island. Was here a couple days ago and tried to swim at Coconut Island but is low tide
during the day and was too shallow.

Will head out for a run soon and head south. Looks like there are some parks south of Reeds Bay where I might be able to swim. Overall, mostly rocky shoreline on this part of the island.

Anyone have any ideas?

If you have a car you can drive to Richardson's Beach. It is only a few miles form the Hilo Hawaiian. The front desk can you directions. Rather easy drive. Thanks.

Have heard that Richardson's Beach is a good place. But no car. Just shoes. Might be too far to run because I need to be back around 2 this afternoon to sleep. Work the red-eye back to the mainland tonight. I'll find something somewhere I hope.

thanks.

I grew up there for a good part of my life and like others, Richardsons is your best bet. You can swim in the area across the seaside (Ice pond) but that's about it. You might catch or get eaten by something if you go swimming in the bay. Kawamoto pool would be your best and safest bet for swimming in Hilo.

Ran to Carlsmith Beach Park. 6.5 mile round trip. Swam in the tidal pool. Although low tide, there was a channel to swim in. Saw a few green sea turtles and lots of fish. Next time will start earlier and run to Richardson's Beach. That looks like a 4.5 mile run to get there. I'm starting to like this Hilo trip better.
