"since when are we not allowed to settle disputes with fisty-cuffs..."

Hehe... Wake up! It's the 21st century! We're all civilized and stuff, we call the Police for every little problem now! Violence (even a slight tap) is frowned upon now, didn't you get the email?
;-)

Trail courtesy/etiquette exists, but this is two ego's at work. Guy in front not wanting to stop and give way, guy with camera insistent on his right to pass. Lose/lose situation.

The separate lines a couple of times and a slowing to virtually stop by the lead guy would have solved the problem, but he just changed lines and kept going each time, that doesn't work at those speeds being ridden.

The camera guy visibly accelerates each time (watch his shadow), and gets back on the front guys wheel unnecessarily, which you could say is the off-road equivalent of tail-gating that happens all the time on-road between cars. After a couple of polite "passing on your left" or similar, he could have just backed off and stopped for 60 secs, and then had the trail to himself again. (Of course, this could have then occurred later down the trail...)

Camera guy mentions assault when front guy approaches off the bike and verbally abuses him up close, correct. But tail-gating aggressively in a car is assault in my mind given the above definition (feeling threatened by someone in an altercation that remains non-contact), so again, my view about him chasing and tailgating when he doesn't get his way initially, I construe that as a form of assault as well.

But simple answer, two ego's at play rather than two mountain bikers enjoying a nice off-road dial, which it could have remained.

Whoever posted "couldn't take it seriously because of the accents..." Hehe...

Completely agree... If either one had been the bigger man and just yielded to the other this wouldn't have happened. Instead we just have a whinny little punk and a grumpy old man.. People in this day and age would rather be right than happy. I go mountain biking to get away from this kind of situation. Guy in back should have just taken another trail (looked like there were plenty) and reaped the good karma.

I hear you, but i think (speaking from my own experience, hehehe...), when i've been unhappy for whatever reason, in altercations that have occurred, I then wanted to vent and be right, (win), where as when happy, or more honestly, spent of negative energy after a good workout, long or short, I view life as being good, great, see the good/ great in those around, laugh rather than cry, and just cannot be brought down by anything going on.

And one of the best places to use up that negative energy is on the trails, away from traffic, crowds, concrete(!) etc.. so I hear you, a lost opportunity for both these guys.
;-)

Watched this on the news yesterday and the wifes first response as we were watching it...

"why didn't the guy behind just stop for one minute, take a leak, look at the scenery, and then carry on and enjoy his ride?"

Why didn't he - because he wanted to film it and it ended up going really wrong for him. Total cock in my opinion and he got what was coming "hey man I'm faster than you...pull over...I've got my Go pro on" ....dickhead.

My thoughts exactly, and that is going by the descriptions above. It is like driving in NZ, people just need to pull over and take a break rather than driving up someones rear.

This is what I say when comming up on someone on a Mountain bike trail:

"Hey, sure is a nice day isn't it?"

"How is the riding going?"

By then they realize that someone has just caught them...

"Do you mind me going by when it's safe?"

"No, no problem just ride at a safe speed"

"Thanks, have a great day"

1) Guy with camera was clearly in the right at least until half way through the video. Indicated his desire to pass numerous times clearly. The slower rider heard him. Faster ride was generally polite for the most part (other then the run you off the path comment). There were a few spots where slower ride could have stopped and let faster rider go by.
2) Slower rider finally lets him go - grudgingly, but then guy with camera does something that puts him back behind the slow rider again. If you are going to pass someone, you at least need to do so in a way that you don't end up behind them 10 seconds later. I would say after that, faster rider shouldn't ask to pass, he had his chance.
3) Guy with camera then agitates things at the end.
4) Slower guy then agitates things at the end.

Yeah...I've been told that before. I attribute it to the fact that I spend 7-8 hrs a day in a lab with no windows staring at atomistic computer simulations waiting like a timid hamster for the phone to ring and a professor to call and pile on more work.

Kind of surprised of some responses here. Lippy? Heckled?

The old guy is an asshole with a real problem. How can that be controversial? (based on this video)

This is what I don't get. How did the slower rider get in front again? at 1:21, the clip switches from our camera man finally getting in front, to being behind him again!?

The more I watch it (2 times now), the more I can see where the frustration is coming from by the stripped guy in front. Passing, even finding a safe place to allow for a pass, isn't easy on this kind of single track. You're only aggravating the situation by repeatedly asking to pass. Then, once he passes the guy, he somehow manage to get re-passed and then continues to ask about passing.... sheesh!

Often I get caught (on my bike) behind a slow car driver on the descent of Mill Creek Canyon. This descent is steep, twisty, and fun and you really want to let it roll. First time or two this happened I tailgated until I got the chance to pass. I decided that I had been a bit of a dick to the driver and now I just come to a stop for a while to let the driver get down the road. Its a steep descent after all so its not like I'm compromising my workout; just keeping the peace and getting to enjoy my descent.
Cheers,
Jim

Lesson #1: When you are in the middle of nowhere, don't antagonize the person who just assaulted you by telling them you just captured their first assault on video.

not sure which video the website had, but I saw the full video on youtube. It looked like the faster rider took a slightly longer (and more steep) path right after the slower rider actually lets him pass. This longer and steeper path ends up though on the main path and the slower ride actually beats him to it and is once again in front. Crazy.

I would bet that the faster rider took a longer trail branch and ended up behind the slower rider again because of that. This happens all the time on the trails that I ride.

Well then watch it again... there are bail-outs for the technical sections nearly every 50 feet, in the first 30 seconds the slow guy had multiple options to either pause for 5 secs on the side or to take the bail-out trail to let the guy behind go through and then hop back on the main trail. Old guy was in the wrong, but the camera guy should have just stopped for a bone anyway and let the guy get a longer head start.

Lack of courtesy on both riders, however, the only one that made the decision to interact with the other is the following rider. Once you catch someone, it is your responsibilty to pass safely, not the responsibility of the passee to let you by because you're a hotshot. It was fairly clear that for whatever reason, the lead rider was interested in continuing his ride without stopping. At that point the only thing to do that is right is A) back off and wait a minute, or b) accept that you'll be stuck riding the lead riders pace.

The following rider was butt-hurt that he wasn't allowed past and his ego got the best of him and he started lipping off. If you're going to lip off to someone, don't post "assault" video's on the net if you get rolled.

Old guy was obviously a jerk in what was shown. He should have just tapped the brakes on one of those pull-outs, and problem solved. But, if I was the following rider I'd have just pulled up for a minute once I realized he was making an issue of it. Same thing happened just last night on a ride -- I stopped, waited two minutes and never saw them again 'till almost the end of the ride.

One of the things I like about mountain biking is the (usually) more friendly attitude and better rider-to-rider etiquette than on the road -- at least in my experience. With the editing it's a little hard to tell if there was something else that set him off.

Saw this on TV and in the news paper. I think the guy being passed, must have gone for a ride to get rid of some stress and the guy wanting to pass, got him on a bad day!

That said, it's pretty easy to spot a GoPro or similar sticking out of a bike helmet! What he needed to do was beat the crap out of the guy wanting to pass, then steal the GoPro! LOL

Don't try to pretend cricket is better than oval ball games. Cricket is just plain stupid.

After 5 days, paint is dry and the grass needs to be mowed, but a cricket test may or may not be decide. WTF is up with a tie/draw at the end of a5 day game? They need to sort a rule out so that a winner is determined.

Cricket makes me want to do bad things to people in white uniforms! FAAAAARRRRKKKK!!!!!!!

Why couldnt the guy with the camera just stop and wait 30 seconds and then ride off again. They weren't in a race.

The other guy shouldn't have beaten him up either but still, the guy at the back was giving him sh1t.

Be the tough guy but if push actually does come to shove, be prepared.

So two guys go out for a ride. Presumably for fun ('cause clearly neither is pro). And because they are both socially inept and wrapped up in their own ego and utterly unable to 'yield' to the other, because, well, that just isn't possible, they both end up being angry, annoyed, upset, hurt, and looking just a little bit foolish. Makes sense to me.
