Skeptical of the claims but wanting to lessen the saddle burn on long rides I ordered the DeSoto 400 mile bibs. I used them Saturday on a 60 miler. The only problem derived from the lack of soreness in the crotch was being more aware of shoulders and forearms...If the 400 mile bibs make the rest of the season as enjoyable as Saturday they are worth every bit of $160...

I recently bought a pair of De Soto Forza tri shorts and just wore them on back to back centuries. Best bike short I have every owned. Period.

It's the only bike short I wear and have worn for a number of years; no need to mess with success.

Just curious but what saddles do you guys use. Just want to see if that makes a difference in comfort.

I just got a pair of the 400-mile shorts today. Took them out on a 30 mile ride, felt pretty good.

Thing is... the fit around the hips. I could do with another half-inch around the hips. I wear mediums in the tri shorts, but these are just a touch tight.

I use a profile design, but saddles are very specific to the person riding on them. I personnally like a cutout of some kind, and then after that a width which matches your "sit bone spread" is a good place to start.

I bought a Cobb. It felt better during the fit. I've used it about a month (500 miles) and it wasn't comfortable till the 400 mile bibs.

No you're not alone. I bought a pair and they just did not work for me. I'm 5'6 and ~125 lbs, and that pad is just way too big. It needs to be scaled down for the smaller sized apparel. Not only that but since the pad is so thick it adds a bit of height, so it can cause you issues if you don't adjust your seat height. It's also way too high up on the stomach. I had to roll it down a bit. I'm sure if you're sporting a belly and want it tucked away it'd be nice, not so much for me. It also creates a massive oven down there as far as breathability if you live in a hot/humid area. My peak weekly bike hours so far this year have been around ~16hrs (not a lot compared to everyone here), but I can say I wouldn't want to wear those on my longer rides.

PS. I missed the money back guarantee time frame, and I'm selling my lightly worn 400 mile size small in the classifieds. /blatant ad

Nice.

Actually, it was more a comment on the fact that I have no problems at all with the medium size tri shorts, but the 400-mile shorts are much tighter across the hips.

Apparently you missed that.

I'm still trying to decide if I like my 400 mile shorts (10 months old). They are damn tight around the legs and when I climb (seated) they tend to want to slide down my arse. I have to pull them up high and tie the draw string tight to keep them in the right position. I've already had to send them back once for the stitching coming undone around the pad so the jury is still out on how well they will last (bar is set high from my 10year old Perl Izumis). On the plus siide they are comfortable at 4hr + on my new Cobb saddle. And I do like the little pockets on the sides (good for keys, gels).

I've had 3 pairs of the shorts in a small from the 2009-2010 models. I purchased a 2011 small 400 bib short version last year and it's WAY tighter around the lower legs than the previous 400 mile non bib shorts. At 5'10" and 145, I'm a fairly skinny dude, and my legs aren't thick. Given it did take a couple weeks on the older shorts to go from a little tight to perfect for me. However with the bib shorts, 7 months later, they're still too tight but at least manageable.

Not sure if it's bibs vs shorts or just the newer models.

A touch late but sounds like the forza tribibs would be a great choice for you, it has a similar, but significantly thinner pad.

at this point the only bibs I own are 400 milers or forza tribibs. They rock, pure and simple.

the tribibs make for a great mtb short where too much pad is not wanted.

i had the same opinion when i moved to the forza shorts. i went with the larger size and they were too big. they didn't feel too big, but it worked out on long rides----they moved in the crotch and top of the legs so that it was irritating.
i went back to the size i thought was too small and started putting them on like a wetsuit: very carefully, and pulling up the back from the inside, starting as low down on the legs as i could, to gently ease them up. then i rode and they were fine, great, didn't notice them, etc. so, in the end, i judged that my first feeling that they were too small was due to the compression factor that makes them tight (and good), and my own errors in putting them on correctly.
i'm on my third pair of the same (smaller) size, so i remain pleased with the fit.

isn't the idea of the 400 mile shorts/bibs that you can wear them w/out washing? not that you'd actually ride 400 miles non-stop, but that you could ride, say, 5 straight days of 80 milers?

not that i've tried.... i like mine (liked the old ones more, though). i wash btwn wears, but that's largely because i my bike shorts: time to ride ratio is too high.
