Damn you.
Wife has an 09 legacy Wagon and I have an 03 Imprezza hatchback. Based on experience with both, we're not looking at subbies this time around. Head gaskets, air conditioners, gas tank lines that make it take ten minutes to fill the freaking tank, and oh the agony of ignition coils, so many coils...
Anyone like kias? I hear they have good warranties.

Team Exergy seemed pretty happy with their Mini Cooper Countryman at the USA Pro Cycling Challenge.

I have a 4 door manual Subaru Impreza hatch. Fits my bike in the back without even removing the wheel. (rear seats down of obviously) Previously i had a Subaru Liberty which i could fit my bike in the back (wheel off) without lowering rear seats.
Otherwise have you seen the new model Subaru?

So, I've started looking at the Honda Fit for an Outback replacement. Any thoughts on it?

You are getting smaller and smaller. The Fit is a world apart from the Outback. I like the Fit, and it gets great reviews, but there are finally a decent number of options for hatches in America. I think my current choices would be between a Mini Countryman or a Ford Focus Hatchback.
Though if you had time I would wait for this to arrive.

I like the functionality of the Outback, but I really prefer a smaller car. An Impreza size outback would be perfect for me, and the XV/Crosstrek would fill that niche.

The fit is pretty ideal.
You could also check into a used Prius. My girlfriend got one a few months ago, and it's been awesome. You don't really pay much of a premium for the hybrid stuff on a used car.

Yeah, I know I'm getting smaller and smaller. I do like the size of the Outback but I also want something that is smaller and more fuel efficient. Also, these smaller cars are cheaper than Outbacks, too.

I'm looking at cars for next yr maybe, i like small efficient hatches as well.. im considering the mini countryman, kia sportage and audi a3 or vw GTI 4dr.. i'm in a mini clubie JCW right now, it has actually been a great car so far, fast and fun and can take the dogs and bikes no probs but i'm not sold on the longevity of it and things that i can't fix will be have to be fixed by MINI\BMW which means big bucks. soo that's why i'm looking.. The Kia seems the like the smartest buy right now.. long warranty, decent looks, and pretty good performance espeically if you get the turbo..

Take a look at the 1st generation Matrix/Vibes. They do come in AWD, but you will get a MPG hit. The 1st gens have more hatchback space than the 2nd gens, and there are quite a few out there. The regular models can be had with a 5spd, but the sportier, XRS or GT (Vibe) can have a 6spd. Our 03 XRS with an Auto will get 32+, more if she is driving it.
The Vibe is the same as the Matrix. Toyota made, at their facility, but with a pontiac label. Only the exterior is different.

Subaru WRX 5-door. Awesome car. Hits 60 in second gear very easily, AWD, lots of room in the back with the seats folded down (easily swallows my tribike without taking the front wheel off, and it looks cool.

that's what we did.. from Subaru Legacy wagon to Fit. The Fit has slightly less luggage space than the Subaru, but much better gas mileage, averaging 35mpg instead of 21. The wagon had a turbo which made it
great fun
to drive, the Fit has slightly better handling though it's not more than adequate in terms of power. No problems in the snow and ice with the Fit, in fact it does better than the Sub because of much better tires.. 4wd doesn't help if the tires are marginal for snow/ice traction.
The ride in the Fit is a trifle harsh, so my wife dislikes it unfortunately..

We bought a 2011 Outback as my wife's car about six months ago. It's a great SUV. We've been getting about 27 mpg which I consider good for the size. It replaced a 1995 Legacy wagon and the move up in size was to fit the growing family. I drive a 2005 Legacy GT wagon that I totally love. While we love our Outback, the model is now an SUV and no longer a wagon. It's too bad that Subaru has gone away from the wagony goodness that made them popular with the masses. While we have use for one SUV, I prefer a fun to drive wagon and the WRX is great but the Legacy is a bit more mature.
We also considered the Mazda5. I think it's a great car, very usable layout, decent to drive and ride, available with a five speed. We went with the Outback over the Mazda because it's a bit bigger, though I wouldn't say it has more usable space.

Well, I found a replacement for my 2002 Outback and it's a 2004 Outback. Main reason for it is because I liked my car, this new one was well maintained, and I was able to pay cash for it. Biggest difference is the new one isn't a LTD so it is missing leather seats and sunroof. I've been driving it for about 2 days now and so far so good.
