Tubular Questions

I haven't used my race wheels since October 2011 and my first race is coming up. I first glued the tires 12months ago and don't want to run into any issues on race day, a few questions.
1.How often should you re glue tubular tires.
2. Use glue or tape
3. Beyond mileage, how often should you change your tires?
Any other comments or suggestions would be a bonus

If the gluing you did was done right, it'll be fine for the next race.
Grab the tire carcass and gently try to roll it off the wheel, if there aren't any weak spots, you're good to go

glue? got a flat in a race once, mechanic gave me a new tire to put on. I never used glue again, it seemed to work fine without glue on race day not sure why it would be any different for any other day.

its fine until you take a corner with some speed and it comes off.

it happens to people sometimes WITH glue on them.
when you ride a spare tubie that isn't glued you need to take the turns gently.

I actually had this happen to me in the '80's. It was about my 5th race or so and it was hot as blazes. I had to brake hard and make about a 130 degree turn coming down a long hill. Ruined a rim, but managed to keep my skin intact. There's a reason you glue them on! I had them glued on, or so I thought. Learned my lesson about proper gluing. Now the tire gets two coats and the rim one.....

the problem with using all of that glue is it gets all over your nice racing wheels.
btw, they had carbon tubulars in the 80s? or are you talking about a different '80's?

No, they were Roval wheels. Aluminum alloy, as I recall. Not sure if anyone had a carbon wheel in the '80's, but I didn't. ;) Yes, we used tubulars before the days of carbon. Hard to believe, I'm sure.... Maybe it was the 1880's...

I rolled one in 1972. It was taped and not glued. Don't remember the brand, but have never used tape since.

Not if you learn proper installation technique....
Not gluing on tires is a monumentally stoopid idea.
I've been riding tubulars almost exclusively for 20+ years and have never rolled a tire, but seen plenty of people do it. If it is just your skin in the game, knock your socks off, I guess. But too often people roll tires and take down others......

Pretty much all you need to know about mounting tubulars is
here
.
This research was done for USA Cycling and is taught to all licensed race mechanics. Good stuff.
