a good 100 yard kick

this kind of stuff should be banned on a triathlete forum.

In 93' CI's were at UofT. I was kinda bummed about that one. For the previous 3 years I had missed the CI cut by fractions of a second in the 100 and the 200 fly, I think in 91 I missed it by 0.07s in the 100 and 0.10s in the 200. Finally made it in 93, and we get to go to Toronto. yay...

I've trained there a couple of times (U of T) but never raced there. My first time @ CI's was Guelph, then Brock U, Sherbrooke and Geulph x2 for the last 2 years. I was 4th in 200 fly 96-98, 3rd 99, 2nd 00. I had bad luck in year 2, 3, 4 being sick or injured each time.

A few months ago I was at about 55 seconds....now after working with a little help from a coach, I am down to 30 seconds. Its still tough....there is a lot to think about. But it has helped my overall swimming because I know the best position for my body to be in. Keep at it!

jhigh, you are right about your kick. It needs work. I too swim around a 1:55/100 right now but closer to 2:15 for endurance, and I am slow. I can easily kick 25 with a board in 45 seconds or better. My swim coach says I have a good kick though, although I don't use it nearly enough. My swimming issues are starting to revolve around swim fitness. I glide too much and my stroke rate is low. Your kick will speed you up a lot if you can get enough O2 to pull and kick at the same time. I don't get enough O2 current to pull and kick hard for very long.

How is your ankle and foot flexibility? If your ankles, calves and feet are all balled up it's really hard to have a good kick.

Also what is your form like with the board kicking? Are your hips still up and do your feet break the surface at all? You have to have the right size board and keep your chest and head down to get the correct form or have better flexibility than most people.

Mix it up. Do sets with a board and sets with out. Use fins and without. Do some ankle flexibility work also. Don't skimp on kicking if you desire to improve your swim.

I can't say I've timed an all out stand alone 25 lately, but, I can sill kick a bit and I'm sure I could hammer one out in well less than 20 no problem. I routinely incorporate a 600 kick broken own into 8x75, 50free,25 fly. That's usually about a 9 minute set and isn't close to all out.

As someone else said, for reference, back when, USA swimming used o host camps for moderately talented age groupers. 11-12 girls and 13-14 boys. They had us do a variety of "test sets" throughout the week, including a battery of kick sets with lazer boards and the results of these sets were logged. At the time I was invited, back around 1985, I broke most of the existing kick records. It's a shame I couldn't swim worth a comparative damn..

Here's another sick 50M kick video:

http://www.youtube.com/...&feature=channel

Wu Peng has picked up a few nice Olympic/World Championships minor medals in the 200 fly over the years competing for China, and he beats a couple of US National Team guys here.

I couldn't tell you what my 25 kick time was. After about age 8, the only time we did 25 kicks was if we were playing King & Queen of the Pool and that was untimed. My thoroughly MOP D3 college team used to regularly do 10x100 yards on 1:45 as something of a recovery set.

Oh shit -- I'm supposed to kick while I swim? thanks for ruining my day.

Though funny, for triathlon, you really don't have to kick much when swimming. An efficient '2 beat' kick, to maintain body position is enough to get you out of the water feeling fresh for the bike. Sure you can kick harder, but IMO the juice isn't worth the squeeze. It's not about how fast or hard you kick, it's about whether your kick supports a good efficient pull.

Can someone help a noobie out here? Is the preferred method for kicking with your face in the water? I noticed one of the swimmers was using a snorkel as well.

I think it is becoming increasingly apparent that my kick sucks, and is likely slowing me down. I can actually swim faster if I DON'T kick.

Other than using a kickboard, what else should I be doing to improve my kick? Would I be better off using fins for my main sets now? if so, which of the myriad of fins out there? I currently have a pair of the Speedo fins, but those seem to be too much of an aide. Even the smallest flutter gives me significant speed, so I don't really know if that is benefitting me.

Thank in advance.

Don't know; don't care.

Yes there is probably something wrong with your kick and I suspect you are (a) bending your knees (b) not bending knees but also not kicking from your hips (c) have tight ankles (d) having body position issues with the kickboard

Practice kicking streamlined on your back from the hips and don't bend your knees.

To answer some questions- poor ankle flexibility (and strength), size 8 .5 shoe, and get really gassed when I focus on kicking from the hips and actually generating some propulsion with it while I swim.

Thanks for All the replies. I mainly wanted to see an average of what people were kicking for 25m/yd in relation to their open freestyle times. It's quite easy to conclude that mine sucks pretty bad, even in relation to those who swim as slowly I do.

Thanks again. I'm headed to kick my way through the weekend!

You only need to develop a half-decent kick. I'm not a fast kicker but I am a fast swimmer. If I wanted to race sprint freestyle, my kicking ability (or lack thereof) would be an issue. In triathlon it is not.

You can work on ankle flexibility by stretching your calves and tracing the letters of the alphabet with your feet.

You're kicking wrong then....

well, duh...

look, i used to be a weak swimmer trying to improve.
then i gave up.
i'm ok with that... i'm putting my effort into other things now. but yes, the weakest point was my kick.
i' swim significantly faster, with less effort, when using a pull buoy.

that said, i know i'm not the worst kicker out there. i do at least go *forward* when kicking, albeit slowly. not everyone can say that.
Funny. I swim significantly slower with more effort when I use a pull buoy. My kick sets are 6x50 on the 1:00 (no fins) and that is working pretty hard.

Kicking a 1:00 100 like some here can? That is fast with no fins and I bet 99% of the people on here (including me) can't swim that fast.
