I was thinking about this the other day too. Now I'm not anyone LA would listen to, but I had a thought.
LA won all his TdFs on long hill climbs. He wasn't all that great at TTs, but held his own. Well triathlon is nothing but a long TT. Most TTs on the TdF aren't 56 or 112 miles long. I really think that's a huge disadvantage for him. I think if LA really wants to dominate a triathlon he needs to find one with a terrible horrid hilly mean and windy bike ride. That is a race where his strength would really shine. On the flats of the gulf coast in a TT.... not really his strength.
His swimming is clearly good enough, and his running will probably improve though. If he is in a race with a nasty hilly bike course, he will probably do even better.
Make sense?

I'm under the impression sprinters have amazing flexibility but for distance runners it's not necessary?

"So exactly how fast does Armstrong hope to run a marathon at the end of an Ironman? According to Salazar, Armstrong has a pretty exact number in mind.
“He’s going into this seriously,” he said. “The way he talked about it, he said, ‘You need to be able to get me to run 2:30 when I’m fresh. If I can do that, I can run 2:50-2:55 [in an Ironman], and if I can do that, I’ll win.’”

Hey Paul -
Unrelated by a question nonetheless...
A few years back Kenny Souza was back at racing a bike and set a record in one of theose distance events (can't remember the one). If I recall, you were helping him with that comeback. Did he continue to train and race after that? What is he up to now?

ok smarty pants;-) Now please tell me what the hell happens to the body following a near death effort over a stage race......I am really curious what happens.....Also, some of our best days on a bike are after a really hard ride/race. I know in running, it is impossible to have that feeling on day 2, 3 and 4.
Well there are several physiological explanations including some interesting ones (such as central governor theory) that are under scrutiny. But from my understanding and my limited education (thus far), during physical exertion, your body will shut down long before it's ever going to die....unless you have the extreme psychological prowess to overcome such innate measures... Paul, what year were you born? 1947? 1971? those are the most intriquing. ;-)

to quote John McEnroe- you cannot be serious! Did you watch a single Tour he raced?
1999: won 3/3
2000: won 1/2
2001: won 2/3
2002: won 2/3
2003: won 0/3
2004: won 2/3
2005: won 1/2
That's an insane record (against the likes of Ullrich, Cancellara, Millar, Botero, Zabriskie, etc.)
while winning craploads of mountain stages and being the GC leader more often than not.
Unlike Millar and Zabriskie who could "rest" and focus on the TT's, he had to race hard every day, and he still dominated TT's.

As others have said, Lance did pretty well at TT's. Kona with strong winds is always going to be an advantage to the strong cyclist. Leito always hopes for a tough bike day so he can put more time into his competition.
Speaking of pros cyclists riding a 112m TT, reminds me of watching Tyler Hamilton in 2006 crush the bike course at Silverman, hilly and a really windy day (mind you he was on a relay team). None the less Lance is a stronger TT rider then him and TH was just coming off his 2 yr suspension. Bjorn was racing on a relay as well, but I think he had some loose stem issues on the bike. I'm thinking he would still say that TH flew.
Either way makes for a good Kona, adds some excitment. I have no doubt Lance will not be neglecting the bike! Could be two Speed Concepts flying after Hawi.

I had the same question: WTF is Paul Thomas? Probably because I'm not a cyclist. My google search showed the same list as yours. I added 'cycle' and found out that PT is the 2011 World Elliptical Cycling Champion! Oh, he's been the Duathlete of the year also.

Paul will offer more than I can on this, but I believe that Kenny Souza won the Furnace Creek 508 (as in, 508 miles). He then the the RAAM and did quite well despite suffering from pneumonia throughout much of the race.
I'm not sure what he's been up to since then??? It would be nice to know.

I did not know who paul thomas was and I think I made him angry. Now that you have told me i know. So he may be someone who can come on a forum and give lance armstrong advice. He also may be more qualified than those other people lance has coaching him. I am sorry I said it took balls to do.
I do have one request. if you are really good or have been or will be in the future please state that so I will not reply and make you or others mad. Paul you are right who am I to reply. Sorry

Lance lurks on the forum and I'm fairly sure he knows who PT is. Whether he "listens" or not, well I'm sure he's getting guidance/input from a variety of folks. Sure Paul may be armchair'ing a bit, but it's advice from a guy who knows how to bring himself to very high levels of fitness.
And trying to balance the kind of running LA wants (or thinks he needs) to do with the bike power he needs to hold on to keep his advantage in Triathlon is, well, a nuanced process. Yeah, his handlers know that- how to get to the start line w/those things balanced is, you have to think, pretty well mapped out; that said PT offering up a thought isn't random.
Moreover, the "bump" an athlete gets from "breaking a few seals" Paul references is real- why do you reckon TdF GC guys do the Dauphine?
