B2B will now finish at the Convention Center

I was just watching the local news here in Wilmington and they have finally made it official, the race will not end at the Battleship but at the downtown convention center.
That is certainly good news, every year it took longer and longer to get back into town after the race. Last year it took me over 2 1/2 hours to get everything back into town so I could get packed up to get home.

Ahhh, but does that also mean that is where the bike will end as well or will they possibly have the bike end at the battleship and you have to go pick up your bike the next day? OR even have to get yourself back over and get your bike? Where could they fit all those bikes in at the convention centre?

I'm not sure about the details the reporters didn't go into too many details and the B2B website doesn't seem to reflect the change.

So, I haven't done the race, and never saw the course. But I have it in mind for a first 140.6 down the road.
Wouldn't this fundamentally change the race at the level of the name itself? Beach to Convention Center doesn't have the same ring.

I'll tell you all right now, my seat is too low, I'm not aero and I carry too much fluid on the bike.

The battleship finish created some difficult logistics and snarled traffic. I don't know the details of the change, but it could improve the event. Obviously, that's the objective. It might be as someone else suggested ... maybe T2 will still be at the battleship but the finish line will be across the river at the convention center. That could work pretty well, I'd think. I wouldn't want to ride across any of those big metal bridges again, though. Did that year one and it was pretty terrifying.
Stay aero my friends.

I thought the island rocked, but for the 70.3 folks it was a nightmare. I saw huge lines when I came in on the bike. And I think B2B is predominately a 70.3 race.
Regardless, it was a tough race last year and I would love to do it again even if it's B2CC

A bit off topic but I am weighing the pros & cons of this race (this change seems to remove at least one item from the 'con' list provided I wouldn't have to deal with logistical nightmares or retrieving my bike). Is this race a legit 140.6? I would like to do the race but hate it when the distances are horribly mis-measured. I recall that the current last year made the swim a joke but I don't know if that was just a fluke. This isn't an m-dot vs non-m-dot complaint (IM Austria & UK as well as Challenge Rothe sound undeniably short by several miles). I know I am getting hung up on a minor detail. If they sort out the logistical issues, then this is on my short list for 2012 or 2013. It is a good location and time of year for me. I like supporting non-WTC races when they are well done.

Set Up Events runs good races. The swim is down current so while the distance is there the water helps alot. But if it makes you d=feel better the year i did it the last half of the bike was into a good headwind!
Overall a good event. I am going to do it again this year.

WHAT? No, it's not.
2011 B2B # starters aka "participants": Full 674. Half 818.
So, more than half of the participants were doing the 70.3 distance. Thus, B2B is predominantly a 70.3
distance
race.

The swim had a nice tail wind last year for sure, but the bike was the toughest thing I've endured in my life. And the run is no joke.
I wondered if B2B was soft before the race because of the swim. I remember somebody on a mic asking how many folks we're doing B2B As their 1st because they thought it would be easier. After a ton of hands went up, he said that we were in for a surprise.
I did B2B and the. Went to IMFL the following weekend as a volunteer. The swim was buttery smooth. Ours was drizzle, fog, and chop.
The weather was low 70s and dry. Ours was low 40s and rain
Both bikes are flat, but B2B was absolutely freezing.
IMFL has a flat run, B2B has several climbs and run on cobbles.
I quickly realized B2B isn't soft.

70.3 is a marketing name. So no it's most definitely not a 70.3 race.

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't implying that a short course is soft but that it is short. Regarding B2B, it sounds like the conditions made it pretty miserable. Now that it has moved to late October, it seems that will be less likely. However, as several had swims under 40' there was something other than a tail wind going on. I didn't realize the bike was flat. Is there a lot of drafting in this race? I would prefer at least a rolling course to keep people honest. Having to significantly change my pacing due to big packs is annoying on the bike and you suffer on the run.

No there is not large packs of drafting in this event. It's still "small" enough so that your not going to have 50 man pelotons passing you at a time.

B2B weather was BRUTAL!! I have NEVER been so cold on a bike. I saw grown men curled on the interstate portion. I was never so happy to get off my bike. Conditions made it more difficult for sure. I am doing IM Fla this year!

I just read an article in the Star News (Wilmington area local paper) written by Dan Spears. He states,
"Bikers will cross the Isabel Holmes Bridge into downtown, then transition inside the Wilmington Convention Center. Organizers said B2B would be the first triathlon in the country to have a transition stage indoors."
This is a direct quote from the Star News Article in the sports section of today's paper. Hope this doesn't break any forum rules since I listed the paper, and journalist.
What I do wonder is how will they fit all those Harleys inside the convention center...

Doesn't IM Wisconsin have a transition indoors?

Quote #1. "Organizers have made a strategic change to the 2012 Beach2Battleship triathlon route. They’ve moved the finish line from the Battleship North Carolina site to downtown Wilmington. The three-sport event will end with runners crossing the finish line near the federal courthouse on Water Street."
Quote #2: "
The course for the event’s running segment will still involve the battleship site
and the race will retain the battleship reference in its name"
