So anyone get a pair of the Rudy Hypermask yet? How do they fit with an aero helmet? do they really provide unobstructed vision in the aero tuck?

1. yes
2. they fit great with the wingspan
3. yes
i got them primarily because of #3 (unobstructed vision). i was previously riding in a pair of prescription oakley flak jackets that i also use for driving (need glasses) and other stuff. those are awesome, but the frame is right in my line of vision on the bike, so i wanted frameless. college cycling team is sponsored by RP so i figured i'd try them out. a few other comments on the rudys.
good:
1. the field of vision is huge. i can barely even see the edges of the lens in my peripheral vision. the top edge of the lens above my line of sight anyway; add to that the fact that there's no frame and visibility is great, especially in the aero position.
2. they come with a removable brow-piece thingy. at first, i took it off because i didn't like how it felt, and i do think the glasses fit better (closer to face) without it. however, it really does help prevent them from fogging up, so i put it back on.
3. adjustable nose-piece is key. you can really customize the fit, which is good for me because i always feel like normal glasses sit crooked on my face.
4. they're very light, if that matters to you.
bad:
1. the optical quality is nowhere near as good as my oakleys. however, i'm not sure that's a fair comparison, since the oakleys are prescription. i can't tell how much of it is the lack of prescription (my eyesight isn't THAT bad - i don't wear glasses all the time) and how much of it is actually the glasses themselves.
2. they don't block as much light as the oakleys. to give them credit, though, they block more than it looks/seems like they should based on how transparent they are. it's not like i'm squinting all the time or anything, so i guess they're fine.
3. lenses are harder to clean than the oakleys. they smudge more easily. this is probably partly due to the special coating on the oakley lenses, though.
4. don't feel quite as sturdy/durable as the oakleys - lighter frame, much thinner lenses (but again, my oakleys are prescription, so that may be part of it). however, reviews seemed to indicate that the hypermask is supposed to be much sturdier than the sportmask, so i'm hoping they'll be fine. haven't broken yet...
and..."that's all i have to say about that."

If these are anyting like the new Assos tt glasses, I want a pair. The Assos are just too much coin to justify.
TTing in a regular pair of shades has nevered work for me, as the top part of the frame obstructs sight.
I will say, I really love the design of the TT helmet that I picked up earlier this year. Airflow is good where I am not boiling hot after 20ks.
As many of you know, I am like slowman riding w/o glasses most of the time. I have 2 pair of Rudys that have turned me into a earwear "wearer"
Off to Rudys sight to check on the new shades....

Just ordered a pair. I will give an update once I try them. I can almost gaurantee that they will be perfect. I was on the fence a week or so back ready to buy the Assos. These will serve the same purpose.
I just htought about it.....While I invest a few hundred bucks in to Asoos bibs, I could not justify doing the same for my eyes as my ass!

no, sorry - just the wingspan and my road helmet, which is an LAS. they fit fine with that one too, although the very tips of the earpieces are just barely overlapping with the back of the retention system of the helmet. doesn't really affect anything, though.

So you got the performance model....it has a removable temple piece?
Does that then make it the same as the "regular" hypermask?
Does the temple piece block any vision?
I sweat like crazy wonder if it is worth getting the performance model

yeah, i got the performance model because that's what was available through our team deal. the brow piece is removable; it sort of snaps on/off. when you take it off, there are little holes in the lens where it's normally anchored, so i guess you wouldn't have those with the regular model. to be honest, i have no idea what the difference is besides that.
i was afraid the brow piece would get in the way just like a frame, which is partly why i took it off at first. however, when i have the glasses adjusted so they're comfortable for me, the brow piece is actually so high up (and right against my forehead) that i can't see it anyway, so it doesn't block vision at all. i guess it depends on where you wear the glasses, but i think they're designed to sit pretty high.
i was kind of skeptical about the brow thing, but it really does help to prevent them from fogging up.

I just wanted to say thank you for your comprehensive review. I have been looking for a longgggg time, and none of the big companies providing online reviews get at the performance's "temple piece" visibility WHILE IN THE TT POSITION, essentially looking through the top of the glasses. I will be ordering a pair now based on this review specifically. I thought that if I didn't like them when I ordered them I could always put the "temple piece" back on for the run, although that seems a little ridiculous.
One more question, what color lens did you get? I am partial to the aesthetics of the yellow frame and blue lens combo. I've even read that it provides ample shade in the sun, while brightening up a darker workout, at least a little bit., say at dusk. I see the pros (macca and big matty reed) often pictured with the old sportmask with blue lenses, so at least someone is using them in the sun.
Thanks

good question on the lens choice....you can get the dark frame and smoke lens from R&A for 160....from Rudy they are offering the 2 for 1 deal for 204 for the laser lenses ( you get to choose the second part of the deal from a whole bunch of stuff)
I have two pairs or other Rudys both black frames: Rydons & RB3....I have the racing red lenses in the Rydons and like them...
All our TTs here are early AM so maybe smoke grey is good enough

no problem. i'm always looking for reviews of stuff so i figured i might as well contribute one. that's a lot of pressure, though...haha. what if you don't like them?
btw, the brow piece isn't too difficult to remove/replace, but personally, i wouldn't want to worry about it in transition.
as for lens color, there was only one option available through the team deal. yellow fluo frame with multilaser blue lens. that's probably why it's so common. as i said before, it doesn't block as much light as my oakleys (i can basically stare at the sun in those), but it's adequate. the flip side of that is that it does pretty well in low-light conditions, so if it gets cloudy or dark or something, you can leave the glasses on and still have pretty good visibility.

Good, I'm glad someone has tested the blue lenses out, I guess my question was does it skew your vision at all by making everything blue, and since you didn't point that out sounds like it just provides a darker shade, nothing blue tinted. I wish any one of my local stores carry Rudy Project, they have pretty much everything else. Everything else seemed to add up when I did the research, let's just say that last bit you provided was the caveat I was missing, hence going forward with purchasing.
I have the tifosi vogel which I really do like, but they keep slipping down, and I recon it's because of the straight ear piece. Also, at 17% light transmission for tifosi "smoke" lens, I think 21% light transmission for the blue lens is pretty close, and will be within the range that is acceptable. The Hypermask seems to curve downward around the ear, which I hope will keep them from slipping downward so much, that coupled with the rubber inner side, and seemingly more substantial and adjustable nose piece than Tifosi Vogel (vogel is adjustable, just too small I think).
Sorry to light this thread up, just want to save others from wasting time looking online like I did, and who are as indecisive as me.

I picked up a pair recently. +2 on everything positive that has already been mentioned. My only negative is that for me, there is no gap between the top of the lens and my forehead.....lens rest right up against my skin. My lenses end up getting pretty covered up with sweat.

Correct, not the performance version. I can see where the performance model has the extra piece on the top of the lens that would eliminate the sweat problem on the lenses.

I dont have tisofi vogels, but I think about them. But on my slip, you can bend aer-arm in any direction, because there is a metal inside and it could be adjusted, the same for nose.

Thanks for the insightful thread. Rudy Project's Hypermask and Hypermask Performance were designed for cycling and specifically for riding in the aero/TT position. These glasses have been designed to fit securely and comfortably with most helmets, both TT and road.
As some of you have alluded to, the Hypermask Performance has a brow bar at the top of the lens, which helps prevent fogging. Of course, this can be removed for a less obstructed view, but you might experience more sweat on the lens.
The curved temple tips and inner rubber padding keep the glasses from falling off the face when in the aero position. The flexible nose pads allow you to create a custom fit by moving them away from your face and making them wider or more narrow, maximizing your range of vision when riding.
If you have any questions specific to Rudy Project products or general inquiries about sunglasses & helmets, do not hesitate to contact me.

Amanda,
Thanks for chiming in here. I have a pair of your Rydons and RB3's ...all have been great. Now that I am heavily into TTs and am in a very aggressive position the Rydons top bar make it very hard to see up the road with out lifting your head.
I just order the Hypermask Performance glasses so I hope these will alleviate that issue and give me full vision. I do sweat a ton so I am wondering if I should leave that temple piece in. Were the glasses designed to not obscure view with the temple piece in?
Since they seem to wrap around your ears do they remain tight to your head? just concerned that that along with their wider profile they might interfere with the ear flaps and strapping on an TT helmet like my Specialized TT2

Paul,
Love that you're riding in a very agressive TT position! Great visual!
You're going to absolutely love riding with the Hypermask Performance and you'll barely notice a change in view with the brow piece. The mask lens is already so large to maximize the field of vision. I would leave the brow piece in, especially if you sweat a ton.
Also, because of the incredibly lightweight design and flexibility, these will not feel tight, but they will remain secure. As I mentioned earlier, they're designed to fit in a TT helmet, so you likely won't experience any interference with the flaps or strapping.
