The lack of water was only an issue the first year. After that no problem.

Ok I will for sure bring both then. I am really hoping it'll be non wetsuit but either way it'll be a fun day.

I'm leaving for Nola in 3 weeks! Driving from Chicago.
Anyone have any (other) advice on the race? I heard the bike is pretty flat, but windy. And the run can get hot.
This is my 1st Tri since IMKY 2010, so I'm probably going to be a little rusty.

Swim waves are up! Anyone been in the lake yet and have a temperature per chance? I would like a non wetsuit swim but I should still dust off my wetsuit and try it on to make sure the few pounds I've lost since last season hasn't made the suit not fit. 27 days!
I swam in the Lake yesterday with a full sleeved suit at 8 a.m. While the sleeves were not needed, I was not hot. I took my suit off in the water as well and was fine with nothing but tri shorts on.
As a reminder, make sure you have tinted and non tinted goggles for race day. If the sun is out, you are swimming east since the swim is back to a point to point.
So you are saying that there is no way that this could be accurate? -

I thought 54 degrees was crazy low.

Temps on the swim course have been around 74-75 degrees. I would expect that it cooled off a little with the down our we had that last few days though. I am betting on 76-77 degrees for the race if we get enough sun before the race.
last Tuesdays readings in the lake including ponchatrain beach where the swim exits.

That sounds like a good temp to me! I have been hoping for non wetsuit so hopefully it'll get above that 76.1 mark. Or I guess I should probably hope for 80's since I have heard they sometimes like to take water temps in "specific" locations to keep it wetsuit legal.
Edit: Thanks for the link too. I have been looking online for an accurate temp reading but was not sure which beach to look at and what site was best.

That sensor has been bad for several weeks. The lake temp at swim time will be hovering around wetsuit legal. The Save Our Lake link posted above is more accurate.

I am not sure were lumocon take the measurement but the coordinates that are listed are not in the lake.
(30° 18.894' N, 90° 16.831' W)
That is on the northshore though and if it is near any river it could be accurate in that spot.

PaintIt - Thanks! I was given that link a few years ago and told the buoy was located in the lake just outside of the municipal yacht harbor. I didn't check the coordinates then, so they may have changed,...or not. :-) However, the water temp reading hasn't changed in a number of weeks, not even a little, so I suspect it's busted. Anyway, I'm not using it anymore based on those coords.

I am not sure where this buoy is located but gnotri.com that local tri club has a link to it on their site. shows water temp at 73deg at 5pm today but that dropped from 76 at midnight due to the rain. looks like yesterday it got to 77 on this buoy.

It's about 3-3.5 miles west of the race site. Good indicator.

Use this website for water temps:

This reading is taking about 5 miles west of the race site.

Why worry about the swim its gong to be cancelled anyway. Either bacteria or rough conditions.

This will be my first time racing NOLA. Has the swim been cancelled in the past due to bacteria levels?

The 70.3 swim was cancelled due to rough water conditions and 5150 was cause of bacteria . Now lake P is one of the dirtiest around. I hope you get your swim in.

5150 was also because of rough water.

Ok we get it. It was cancelled last year. No need to bring your negativity around here! Some of us who are traveling along way don't want to start worrying about that. So thanks.

74-75 is pretty high. I'm assuming the race will still be wet-suit legal though.
It always takes me a few swims to get used to my wetsuit. I live in Chicago, so dont really want to practice in 40 degree Lake Michigan. Thoughts on just doing the swim sans-wetsuit? No idea what the conditions are like. I know wetsuits help, but I haven't put one on in like 2 years (last Tri was IMKY which is non-wetsuit). So dont want my 1st time wearing it to be during the race.
Also, is there a practice swim on Fri or Sat?

Shouldn't be a problem swimming with no wetsuit. A friend has done it twice. People are swimming in the lake right now without.
No formal practice swim, but a lot of people go to the lake front on Fri/Sat for a swim. Most go to the spot on Lakeshore Dr. where the locals swim. It's a few miles west of the race venue, on the west side of Bayou St. John. Drive by after 3 on Fri or after daybreak on Sat. can't miss it, there will be a number of people out there.

Yeah I'm still debating whether or not I want to wear my wetsuit or swimskin. I want to wear the swimskin to get a good swim in before Texas but I really do not like the idea of giving a few minutes away by wearing one. So I am hoping it's a non wetsuit swim so I don't have to worry about it! Or that my coach makes me not wear it. I know the race "doesn't matter" for me for placing because I will not be racing the 70.3 WC anyway but still, I'm too damn competitive! Haha

Just read through your blog, you're pretty badass. I ran the Chi-town half as well last week. You beat me by 30 minutes.
Good luck at Nola!

Thanks! I literally had ZERO clue what I could run. Thank goodness I started running with someone or else I don't think I would have pushed the pace. It was a fun little race though. I'm excited for NOLA. Good luck to you too. It should be fun. Too bad our warm weather went away I was starting to get used to 70s and sunny!

I'm starting to worry about this year too. I was trying to be optimistic and was going to register tonight, but currently, Saturday night is showing 18mph winds with 26mph gusts into Sunday morning. Even the race director confirmed that anything over 15mph would likely cancel the swim.
I'll gamble and wait until Saturday. I'll pay the additional fee for late registration if it means guaranteeing that I get to swim.
