Tri Suit Recommendations Quote | Reply

I'm looking for a new kit to use this year. Other than my local races, I'll be competing at IM Louisville and hopefully Kona. I came across two different 2XU suits that say they help cool the body. One is the Fusion which has "Dark Shield Technology" that's meant to keep you cool when it's very hot (as it will be in my races this year). The other is the Long Distance Tri Suit that has something they're calling Ice-X Fabric that supposedly cools the body by up to 5 degrees. Any experiences/recommendations? Thanks in advance from a first time poster.

my experience with 2XU was it did not last well, and the legs felt very baggy, especially when wet. I had top of the line clothing, so that wasn't the issue. Now using only Kiwami, I am very spoiled and feel MUCH more comfortable.

Most brands are using "coldblack" or similar technology. Basically the fabric looks black in the visible spectrum (so it looks good and is not see through when wet), but "looks" white in the IR (heat) spectrum so that it doesn't heat up too much on a sunny day.

For quality/durability you'll find a lot of fans here for De Soto and Kiwami (and deservedly so).

If you are doing IMs, seriously think about a 2 piece (much easier for bathroom breaks, and flexibility for fit/pockets). You'll notice that almost all the pros use a 2 piece for IMs these days.

I just raced in my Kiwami Konami for the first time, yesterday in Galveston. Everything you read on this board about Kiwami is true. The suit is super comfortable. Great for hot weather too.

Not to mention their top notch customer service.... Andre is the man

best,

Hi,

I'm looking for a suit with padding and the longest zipper you offer. Which would you recommend? Its for a 70.3 and eventually a full.

Thanks

Our lab testing showed an average 20BPM and decreased sweat rate in athletes wearing our white Rocket kit (20BPM model, of course) over an hour of exertion on the trainer. This, when compared to a competitor's black kit plus white and black cotton as a baseline. For any given material, white is going to be cooler than black. For privacy, the entire front of our 20BPM suit is lined in a dark material so it isn't see through when wet.

By popular demand, we have a 2 piece model for 2012 which will be available online and in stores in the next couple of weeks.

Yes, I did say that. The 2012 apparel is produced and is trickling out to the world. Some stores will have it in the next couple of days and some may take a few days longer. It should be in stores now, but paperwork kept it on a loading dock an extra long time.

Sorry I got your hopes up a little early. I'll be at Wildflower hanging with TriLab so if you want to kick me in the shins I'll understand :-)

I had the opprotunity to use the 2XU Compression trisuit at a race a few weeks ago. It had a great tight fit but was not restictive and seem to be as cool as any other one piece suit I have worn here in Arizona. The suit swam well in the water...no billowing or major water entering, was comfortable on both the bike and run.

I would recommend either the Kaiman XC or the Konami. Those 2 suits have basically the same cut but their material differ wiht the Konami particularly adapted for hot weather races.
They both have a deep front zipper.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.

the Kaiman XC is a new and improved version of the existing and discontinued Kaiman. comfort has been improved with a lighter, more protective fabric and inseam is a tad longer.

Re: Tri Suit Recommendations [j_rench] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

+1 on the Kaiman. I raced in it for at least a few halfs, including Kansas, Oceanside, and Wildflower, and the Vineman Full, where it gets really, really hot. The suit is extremely comfortable. The pad is light, comfortable, doesn't chafe, and is unnoticeable when running. It has a long zipper and generously sized pockets. The smaller pockets are great for gel packs and other small items. The shoulders have good coverage. While not hydrophobic, it does not get as heavy as other kits I have worn when it is wet and it dries out pretty fast.

I will concur with Jordan's review of the line from a few years ago. I would characterize the feel of the suit as wearing "boxers." If this is the fit an feel you like then this is probably a good suit for you. If you want something that feels more solid and more like "briefs", then you may want a 2XU or De Soto.

Prima top and bottom or the konami are hands down the best LD suits. They use the same fabric as the amphibian which is very light and dries quickly. I don't think the Kaiman does though.

Personally I'd get an amphibian too for short course races.

I use DeSoto for about every distance race(IM, HIM, Mary, Ultra).

The most extreme hot conditions I wore it was IMAZ April 2008 where it was 95 degrees. For cold I wore it at the Grand Rapids marathon in 2007 where the day's high was 35 degrees.

Swim - Bike - Run the rest is just clothing changes.

What sort of technology in fabric could are you suggesting results in such a significant reduction in HR? I don't see a lot of details on the product page. Also curious about the dark liner - does the dark show through when wet...is it opbvious there is a dark liner under sections of the white suit?

If you want to reduce heart rate in an athlete at a given level of effort you need to find ways to make their cardiovascular system more efficient as it attempts to cool the body. To achieve this reduction in heart rate 3 variables are combined in the 20BPM suit:
  • Reflective material on as much exposed skin as possible reduces heat absorption. While there are colored fabrics which are very reflective white is absolutely the best.
  • Technical fabric keeps the athlete cooler by wicking sweat.
  • Compression prevents blood pooling at the extremities which helps the cardiovascular system remain efficient.

This is, of course, a gross simplification of what we are trying to accomplish, but gives you an idea.

While I personally cannot speak smartly to the quality of the Kiwami kits, if customer service is any indication their kits will be amazing. Andre has been a true professional and a pleasure to do business with. I can tell you I purchased two Amphibian kits and a Konami. The Konami will serve as my hot weather/long course kit. Looking forward to getting these kits in the mail.
