Does he still do the bulk of his riding indoors? Is Ironman still in his sights or is 70.3 the sweet spot for him?

I think tririg interviewed him a couple a months ago and he does seem to do most of his biking on the trainer. I don't know about Kona. I don't think that distance is his forte but Kona is good exposure.

He was first american this year! I think that's a pretty solid showing. But like the current push by most usat coaches recognize podiums not place among americans. Didn't he win some fulls?

I think he's a better at halves and Olys than fulls.

Off topic.. sort of..

but..

How does Potts do on really technical courses? I mean he was riding in ITU where courses can get pretty technical.. has doing the large majority of his cycling indoors ever come back to bite him in the arse?

I think he's won IMCZ and IMCDA - perhaps both in 2010?

I'm more impressed with his mental ability to go on the trainer that often - I love the trainer for training, but even I'll admit freely that it can get kind of depressing after several weeks on that thing. Even with the motivation of power numbers to chase, after I while I start thinking "is this what my life has come to? Spinning by my lonely $$$ self in a garage, trying to get a number on a monitor? With no immediate reward for weeks, if not months? WTF!"

He kicked ass at the Philadelphia oly Tri. Course record. It seemed technical to me. Those roads are kind of rough, and the climbs are steep, twisty descents. But of course he had an empty road ahead of him almost the whole time.

I do most of my training on the CT and I always worry about erosion of my bike handling skills so I try to ride outside at least once a week. I also worry that IM / HIM length races are going to be a pain in the neck because I so rarely wear a helmet indoors.

For real? You think that because someone rides a trainer a lot they will be slower on a course that has turns?

Sigh... ST over analyzes everything.

although it would still be boring he set up is pretty nice. Not very garage like at all.

I do much of my riding on CT. It is boring but I would rather have boring than the stress of dealing with the roads/drivers in my area.

Riding almost exclusively indoors would certainly have the potential to handicap someone on a difficult course if said person has shit bike handling skills. Riding a trainer doesn't teach you how to climb, to descend, take corners, etc.

Look at the gap put on the Schleck boys on the descent on stage 16 in last years' TdF. Look at Chrisse going ass-over on the descent on Alpe d'Huez. Handling matters on some bike courses. Fact.

I'm sure that racing ITU he would have done enough riding in packs to learn to ride well - though I know even then he was doing a lot of his training indoors.

Fact - none of these gnarly courses are triathlon

Why not just ride on rollers once a week? Rollers do far more for handling skills than road riding. I'd much rather ride on the road than rollers, but if your only reason to ride outdoors is for handling you'd get a lot more accomplished with a set of rollers.

As he mentions in that tririg video, training as a top class swimmer in a previous life has got help. Hours and hours of being immersed in water with nothing but the bottom of a pool to look at each day. At least he's got a TV when he's on the computrainer.
