Rode the full course today. 3:30 at a moderate pace (still wore me out), not bad considering this is 20 miles longer than I have done so far this year and I ran hill repeats yesterday.

First 20 miles is the same as last year. Dirt sections in very good condition (packed, not a lot of loose stuff).
Joe Bean hill (largest climb from previous years) has been removed from the course. Still some punchy dirt sections in the middle. In general good condition, but a few rough spots. Removal of Joe Bean brings this back to more of true classics course, last years course (around 5000' of climbing and 64 miles was more like an Ardennes classic (not balanced enough and a bit too long and hard for Cat 5s especially in April).
Mostly flatter from miles 30-40. Cheese factory road is pretty rough, but is it dead flat and there is only one turn on this section. The power riders will like this section. Very open, could be interesting if it is windy here.
Climbing is concentrated in the last 20 miles. There is 1-2 miles of gradual paved climbing leading into Meeting House road (big rollers), which will make this section a little tougher than in the past. A few rough spots here, but mostly good. The steepest part of meeting house (only about 30 meters) is pretty washboard and loose. It would be easy to spin out here if you are out of the saddle.
Old Stage (final climb) is in good shape. They also simplified the finish, so there is just a right turn onto main street and then 200-300m to the finish (flat), instead of the horseshoe turn and finish on a side street last year.

Overall I think this is an improvement over last years course. 4000' of climbing (but a lot of punchy stuff) and 62 miles. Very balanced course, will favor the all arounders in the higher categories (3 and above). Still more of an endurance/climbers race for the pikers (Cat 4 and 5). I would rate the dirt road surface in pretty good condition, paved roads are very good, nothing to get concerned about. I always ride my usual road tires and rims (my regular rims are 28 or 32 spoke Open pro/Velocity Arrowhead, so I ride sturdy wheels in general for road racing), although there are always plenty of 404s used here. I finally got a set of 404s for road races, but just don't want to use them on this course (higher chance than normal of hitting a pothole or a rock).

Good luck. Lets hope for nice weather. I see the Cat 5s going 3:05, Cat 4s 2:55, Cat 3s probably 2:48, and Masters 2:40 to 2:45 on the current course.

My wife and I rode it last weekend. How did you like the little climb on Old Stage, just a couple miles from the finish. Like adding insult to injury! I think the dirt sections will remain in good (fast) condition if the current weather pattern of some rain every 2 or 3 days holds out.

I agree with you on wheels, seems a little risky to do a 40 mph descent on dirt with carbon.

I have always liked the old stage climb. It sets up a 4-5 mile fast run to the finish. This actually makes it difficult to escape on this climb. Unless you can take 3 or 4 guys with you, probably going to get caught. Need to stay focused on the little flat section in the middle, because it is easy to get separated here in a moment of weakness.

As far as the Zipps, I think they are sturdy enough, I am more worried about knocking it out of true really bad and/or getting a small crack, not the wheel failing. I just like the idea of riding a steel frame with sturdy wheels on this course. Feels more old school.

Where are you getting your elevation numbers from? Everything I looked up on Garmin's site or MapMyRide, show the course well under 5k.

How far out is the Cheese Factory section from the finish? And what are the winds typically like?

Don't tell him! It sounds like a good TTers place to give it a go.

Thanks for the update tri yoda. I'm looking forward to this race - master's 30+.

It is well under 5K, it is only 4K (okay 3950' according to the official course map). The course from last year was close to 5K.

15-20 mph winds are not uncommon in this area this time of year, although yesterday was very calm. 10-15 mph winds are quite likely. Cheese factory is at least 25 miles from the finish. You might be able to drop some weak riders off the back here, but I can't see a real move going at this point. It is fun to ride because it is one of the rougher sections, closest you can get to pretending you are on cobble stones.

Based on the way there is more climbing directly before meeting house road, I think meeting house road becomes the best place to make a move. It is about 12-14 miles from the finish, has some very steep rollers with steep descents, and people will be a little bit gased from the climbing in the previous 2 miles. Aggressive riding here, especially on the descents can open up gaps very easily, because meeting house is a little intimidating (steeper, rougher downhills) and some people just mentally back off. At most you can have two riders in each tire track, if you try to ride the crown here it is really dodgy, so it always seems to get strung out here. Although it has rollers, it really is a power rider section, where maintaining momentum on the downhills is the most important thing. Organized riding by a smaller group on the flat to downhill section of paved roads (4-5 miles) to stage road that follow meeting house could consolidate a lead going into the final bit of climbing on stage road.

You excellent analysis makes you sound like you've ridden this more than a couple times:)

Did anyone else get the April Fools facebook update today on Battenkill. Someone thought it would be funny to put out a message the Washington County passed legistlation limiting the number of riders on the road and that all races would be limited to 10 riders chosen by lottery. Most unfunny.

This will be my sixth time racing. The only only reason I have not raced this every year, is that I was ran Boston twice. I also usually ride the course once in the spring as a pre-ride and then once in the fall, just because it is such a great ride (and I only live 40 minutes away). So, I have had plenty of time to daydream about ways to ride to victory on this course while I was riding it. The podium so far has eluded me, but I always like to think maybe this is the year. Even if it's not, this is such a great race. I look forward to hearing others take on it, especially those of you who are coming from some distance away.

Race week is here, any other STers besides the 4 of us (and Murphy'sLaw) racing?

By the way, the best place to go is right after telling me to get on your wheel (mile 15 or so?)

Yeeaahhh buddy. I had a B- effort to finish 9th at the Nor Cal Roubaix-style race Saturday and have a fire in my tummy. When I come by and pat my hip, that means it's go time.

What time are you getting up there Friday? I should roll into town around 10 or 11 and want to head out to ride a good chunk of the course.

I've got a friend doing it in 35+ V. Its his first bike race. Ever. He doesn't train on hills. I expect he'll be dropped within 10 miles but he needs to learn somehow.

I'll be there in the 40+ field.

Wright, Cheese Factory and at least a portion of Meeting House were graded last week and are now strewn with stones. Unless we get some rain before Saturday to help pack down the surface, there will be lots of flats.

There is supposed to be some rain tomorrow and maybe wednesday, hopefully there will be some decent traffic to help pack things down too. I hope the 25s with latex tubes will hold up! I did the race several years ago on 23s with no problems during the race but both tires were flat the next morning (very lucky).

What is the deal with the multiple waves for the same AG? Are they essential different races? Are racers somehow grouped into one color or is it just based on when you signed up? Just curious.

Thanks,
