Fair enough. I spent about 30min looking at videos of Martin, Fabian, Z-Man- all straight extensions or S-Bends- it looks possible to achieve the position fairly easily. What a wonderfully obsessive way to spend a Friday night. :)
I only ask because I saw Damon's post and the illustration in Tri Mag. And then have noticed some folks using it- El Pistolero, Frandy Schleck ,etc. Many years ago I used a ski bend Profile allowing me to achieve the position easily but then got comfy w/s-bends over the last several. I use Profile Cobra s-bends (cut down) so the shifters are practically in my hands allowing me to *lighty* grip and cover up the shifters.
My arms are parallel; are my thumbs in line w/my forearmes pointing up? I think so, though depending on how I'm riding (on a long flat, trying to get low) I may rest my hands sort of flat-ish over the shifters- this relaxes the tension in my forearms.

But let's be honest... nothing looks as sexy as a straight/s-bend aero bar.
I agree.... but is that the sexiest example you could dig up? How about this:
Although I'm not sure how anyone could actually use this...
Although I believe you meant to send this to the OP, I would argue that neither of those bars are as sexy as Mirinda Carfrae...

So suppose you can achieve the hand position of one extension shape over another? Are you really sure they ate going to reduce your overall drag? What magnitude of improvement are you expecting heere? How will you know you got it?

Those look terribly un-aero. A big
angled
wing section? Does the front end of the bike need downforce or something? And having a sharp leading edge is just...dumb.

If I recall, John Cobb stated somewhere that rotating the thumbs slightly inward to the inside of the aerobar, caused the air to accelerate over the back of the hand and out the side of the torso and past the lats, thus improving the aerodynamic in a small but significant way. I hope he chimes in here.

Is this an oxymoron?

To answer the original question. Yes. I am new to biking and had stock S-Bends. I changed them Ski Bends and rode this morning. Way more comfortable on the wrists.....just need to work on the rest of my positioning because my neck gets sore after an hour and a half or so. Then again....it was my second "real" ride of some distance.

i have used s-bends for several years, primarily out of asthetic considertations.
i think ski-bends look weird.
i recently swapped bikes and had the chance to have both on my new bars.
i decided to try the ski bends. i don't think i will ever go back.
man, they are so much more comfortable, i think i will gain aero advantage just because i move around less.

The New Specialized Wind Tunnel
Will this be a game changer for Specialized, in both sales and product design, or will it not move the sales and design needle versus those in Specialized's competitive set?
