Syracuse 70.3 Water Temp In June

Any locals have any insight into what to expect for water temp at Cuse 70.3 this year? I know it has historically been in the mid 60's but that was when the race was later in the Summer. Now it's in June...

I would guess high 60's to low 70's. The CNY triathlon club trains there all during the Summer. We are usually swimming by the first of June when it is a bit chilly but it doesn't take many warm days to get the reservoir quite comfortable for swimming. I think late June will present perfect water conditions.

4 months out and still no information about the 2012 race, which is rather disappointing.
Any idea what the host hotel will be? My wife and I would like to stay there if possible. In 2011 it was the Holiday Inn Hotel Syracuse-Liverpool. Good chance it is the same place?

Great question. From the description, it looks pretty much the same as last year. Out. 2 Laps. Back. Add and short/ annoying out and back. Finish. Am I missing something?

Yes, the new course isn't up on the website yet, but check the facebook link above. From pretty much the swim exit, you run through the park for a little, then out of Gate 3. Head south on Apulia Rd down to Palladino Rd, turn right on to Ransom Rd until the vineyard, then turn around and go back the same way. This is a six and a bit mile out and back, so rinse and repeat! It's totally the opposite direction to last year as apparently the Rail Road company don't want the tracks closed down for the whole day (not that I've ever witnessed a train using them). The elevation is the same as last year but the hills are different. I'm going to run it tomorrow so will report back. It's now an out and back that you repeat.

I ran one loop of the course yesterday (I know, I'm a wimp!) and first impressions are that it is going to be fairly tough on race day, but better than last year's course. I ran it on fresher legs of course, only fatigued from last week's training volume. The outbound leg is more difficult than the inbound since that's what takes in the majority of the climbs, so on the second loop on race day I would think the hill at Palladino into Ransom is going to be tough. Short, but tough. The thing about that climb is that as you turn right onto Ransom you continue climbing for a bit before the rollers up to the vineyard. The return journey, naturally, has some steepish descents, which for some can be as bad as the climbs. What I found worst about it was running on the shoulder along Apulia Rd, there is quite an extreme camber in the road in places, which I have always disliked. Bear in mind that since the course will be an out-and-back, twice, there will be runners heading north and south, at the same time as cyclists heading north, so there probably won't be much room on that section for about a mile.

Thanks for the review. Did you, by any chance, happen to bring a gps that and would be willing to post a hill-profile?

I did not, however I can next time I go out, either on the bike or running, since I do a lot of riding in that area too. In the meantime, the link to the g-map is in the post a couple above. Close out the "zoom window" to get the whole course to display on the profile bar.

Thanks for the intel. I did the race in 2010 with the godawful run into the city and will be back this year. So you think the run is slightly easier than the 2011 course?

It's difficult to give a fair assessment after running just one loop with relatively fresher legs, but yes, first impressions are that it is slightly easier than last year's course. Not without it's own challenges though, and psychologically, an out-and-back done twice may be tough!
When the weather warms up I'll get some race simulations done and report back.
