Hi everyone,


I hope this email finds you well and you're enjoying the first few weeks of the season. During the past few years I have been working with the University of Washington and Len Brownlie (of Aerosports Research) to setup two wind tunnel sessions a year in an effort to provide folks from the Pacific Northwest with a local option at nearly half the cost of sessions at other low-speed wind tunnels. A group of five riders took part in our first session in March 2011 and we had the following results:


(Note: If the following table doesn't come through well the best result was 238 seconds of savings in a 40k TT. Average improvement was ~60 seconds.)

Here are the details:
- Session Cost: $650 per/rider (with a max of 5 riders per day of session)
- What's included: ~2 hours of tunnel time, professional consulting, and a testing program desiged around your goals (e.g. equipment or position changes, various wind angles, etc.). You'll also receive a summary report and DVD of your session. (In full transparancy it took a while for our riders to receive their summary and DVD during our last session and I've taken steps to make sure this doesn't happen in the future, but it may take a while.)
- Tunnel: University of Washington's Low-Speed Wind Tunnel in Seattle
- Consulting: Len Brownlie of Aerosports Research

9/7 and 9/8 2012 - ~4 slots available

Carl,
first, thanks for setting this up. I've not done this before so have a few questions about what happens during a session.

We show up with bike, race wheels and TT helmet (assuming we have them, of course which I do)?

The tunnel folks do some sort of baseline measurement with this, and then suggests / tests a series of changes to rider position? Do they swap and test different stems, helmets, etc.? Do they have this stuff on hand?

That's pretty close to the typical flow I've experienced so far:

Prior to the session:
- I'll distribute a few questionaries you'll fill out, which will help Len develop your testing objectives and protocol
- You will also get a chance to exchange emails with Len to talk about where to get the most tunnel time "bang for the buck."

You'll bring to the session:
- Typical gear setup
- Anything you'd like to test

We will NOT have additional stems or equipment to change between (e.g. 90 to 100mm stem), but there is time for flipping/exchanging stems, adjusting reach and pad position, etc.

Things to remember:
1. You biggest gains will come from positioning rather than equipment, or at least usually due. So, testing 4 pairs of wheels provides less value than testing 4 hand/arm/head positions.
2. Gross (large) adjustment truing is better than Minor (small) fine tuning during your first tunnel session. During your first session you'll likely find 2 or 3 significant changes that you'll have to remember to "hold" or work your way into. Subsequent sessions will provide a better foundation for small changes.

During the session:
- We'll start with calibration and baseline run to establish our starting point.
- Begin tweaking and evaluating.

For my first session I wanted to optimize my frontal position and then evaluate 2 skin suits and 3 helmets, so my flow was:
- Baseline run
- Adjustment round 1 (saddle up, extensions out, focus on head position)
- Run
- Adjustment round 2 (more coaching on head and shoulder position, arm pads in)
- Run
- Adjustment round 3 (more coaching on head and should position, extensions out and down)
- Run
- Adjustment round 4 (more finer tweaks)
- Run
- Adjustment rounds 5 and 6 and runs (Nike Swift Suit versus Castelli Body Paint)
- Runs
- Adjustment rounds 7 though 9 (3 helmets) - Note, this was insightful, because for my position not all helmets performed the same.

Also, several folks have asked whether or not you'll...

1. Be able to make adjustments during the session? Yes, you'll be able to make adjustments during the session.
2. Will consulting be offered to help recommend changes? Yes, Len will be providing consulting throughout the session to provide insight into the best changes for your body type, flexibility, equipment, etc.

That would probably depend on your objectives as well as number of measures, and at what wind speed, for each yaw angle. I think the pedestal can be move remotely during a run, so let's assume 9 total angles (-20, -15, -10, -5, 0, 5, 10, 15, 20) and 3 runs each angle (26, 28, and 30 mph)...that would probably be around 20 minutes. Maybe a bit more.
