Hey guys,

I’ve got answers to all your troubles. Read below…

For anyone trying to run Di2 wires internally through the Missile EVO bar with wire kit #ISMEW79AI, the trick is to use the extension switch wire with the ST’s on the base bar and the ST wire with the extension switches. If you’ve got it there in front of you you’ll see the wire for the extension switches is a bit short but will just reach the ST’s at the end of the base bar (you might want to shrink wrap the wire kits side of the plug before routing)…and the ST wire is much longer, length you’ll need if you’ve got the extensions mounted any where past the first two positions.

The little triangle-ish boxes at the shift wire junction will get stuffed in the stem, it’s a tight fit, but they’ll get in there.

There is a new wire kit that will soon be available, part #ISMEW79AI2, this kit has longer wires for the extension switches which will make this swap trick unnecessary.

It’s not quit as difficult as I was expecting but definitely takes some patience…but once finished it’s pretty sweet how clean it is.

Any questions?

Hi,

Do you have pics of Pro missile evo aerobars with Di2 for see if it's ok now ?

Thank you.

I don't yet have the bars (they're on back-order), but I can confirm that the part # listed above is the appropriate one. Also, I was playing with the Pro Missile Evo stem and the harness and really struggling to figure out how the junction box (NOT the di2 control box -- I'm talking about the box that splits the single wire coming out of the control box for each side's shifters (L & R) into two (for L-extension, L-brake/shifter and another for R-extension, R-brake/shifter). That junction box DOES fit into the stem, but it takes some careful pushing and wiggling. It will be interesting to see how well it fits with 2 junction boxes pushed through, as well as 2 brake cables.

Just wanted to confirm for all that it DOES work. Don't give up. Took me about 15 minutes of playing around before I figured it out.

I have been assembling the same configuration in this thread. And since it does not seem like there has been a located solution, I was able to talk with Shimnano and explained to them that there is no way to "connect" the aero bar controls to di2 the wire harness. I was able to find out that Shimano supposedly made an aero wire harness for this (I think that was stated earlier) but they also have connectors that will bridge the two...essentially an extension cord. So, long story short, if you have the Pro Missile EVO bars (no, not the ones on Bonktown), and the EVO stem, it will work. Like anything this specific, you need the right tools. The little section that "splices" the aero controls and the brake controls does fit in the stem itself...it's tight, but it fits.

No question that when this is all put together, it loos slick. But getting from point A to point B takes a ton of patience and precision and money. I will post pics, hopefully, when it's all buttoned up.

the wire harness i listed above works just fine. you don't need an additional connector. with careful work, the additional junction boxes will also fit into an EVO stem.

i wound up machining my own stem (wires entirely in the bars, into the stem, and exiting into the frame w/o ever being exposed to air), so i don't have this issue any longer. :)

it's NOT an aero harness. just want to have the correct info in this thread.

My aero bars must be longer or something. It's not that I cannot get to them, it's that they don't reach. If I could use the longer of the two on both, no prob, but with the shorter one, too short.

Ya, the little section where the two are spliced is tight. My biggest concern was breaking the wire internally.

Thanks for your feedback!

Re: Di2 Through New Shimano Missile EVo [Bogusdogs] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

i've got LOTS of slack in there in my setup, for both bullhorns and shifters. however, i don't have a ton of spacers. that could change things. also, i have a UCI-legal position, so one could have longer extensions.

you'd have to work hard to break the wire internally. you can also dremel out those junctions a bunch. i did that. i actually have the junctions inside the pro missile bars now.

Can you post some pics...granted, most of it is probably internal. When you say "junction box" are you referring to where the brake and aero bar wires come together, or the actual junction box in the frame, or the place where the green/red light is?

Seriously, this conversation will help MANY people when these bars come more available.

You are not using the EVO stem though...right?

sorry. control box = has green/red light.

you're right--the junction box is typically in the frame at the bb. i was also using 'junction box' to mean the connection between the wires that go to brakes/shifters and shifters.

i do not use the evo stem, but i have had it and did wire it up that way to see how it worked.

i may post some pics later, but all you would see is the cleanest frontal profile you've ever seen on any bike (seriously)...not a single wire visible.

LOVE IT! Again, thanks for the help. I am a little hesitant to "dremel" those connections...gulp.

basically, they are a plastic cover around a small circuit board which makes the connections. you can dremel off a bit. just go slow and shave little layers at a time. take off only what you need. you know how they're not really rectangular? (hard to describe to people who aren't familiar with them, but if you have them you know the shiny portion is sort of recessed.) you can shave off those legs.

if you see any little green bits, you've gone a little too far, but it's ok. that's the circuit board. you won't really damage anything.

i may have some before/after pics of that. not sure.

this may give you an idea of what i drilled off. (sorry, that stem is an early plastic prototype.) that bit of filing makes quite a bit of difference in clearance.

What the heck? You seriously put the control box IN the stem! That is friggin' slick! Can you make more?

Hey, I have re-read it all again, and just wanted to let you know that I don't have the same aero harness you have (the one you posted with longer lines)...I have the original one that has the one end substantially shorter...hence the need for the extensions. I am assuming you have the 'newer' ones?

Cool stem. Does it work well?

wires, junction boxes, control box...it is ALL internal. i made one for myself. i *could* make more but have yet to decide.

i have the harness that i mentioned above.

this is what it looks like....all wired up. (yeah, there's a little loop at the right brake/shift lever, but that's only because i was waiting to heat shrink it before tucking it in.) NOTHING is exposed.

That is awesome! So clean. Love seeing stuff like this that is created without a bunch of electrical tape and zip ties. The view from the top, of the control box, must be cool too. Nice work...Shimano would be proud :)

Hi mate,

The front end of your SHIV looks mint!! I sent a post to one of your older posts when you said you were looking at getting some custom stems made up, by the look of that picture it's made. I've got a SHIV and would be interested in converting it to Di2. So if you can still get the stems made or if you could put me onto someone that could make it I would greatly appreciate the help and any other info on cable routing

Cheers

Nice work....! Can you let me know if your able to produce any more of the stems. If so let me know costs etc!
I've just got a Matt Black Shiv Module as a Specialized supported rider and want to run a fully internal Di2 setup.

I was thinking of rewiring the Shimano cables and placing everything inside the frame. The only issues is the junction box location?

Any tips for stuffing the junction box into the stem?

I'm using a scott plasma tt stem.

It looks like a really tight fit, but I can't quite get everything in. I was thinking I may have to cut off the end of the junction box that has some holes for zip ties.

Did a bit more research, looks like I have to grind down those connector boxes as well as the adjuster box thing, judging from how the manual describes it.
