2011 Buffalo Springs HIM. Didn't even know how "to" properly swim; I must have looked like a drunken duck dragging an anchor. Luckily the wetsuit kept me from drowning. Then 3 1/2 months later was in Kona. I'm hooked now......
I do not regret a day I spent in uniform—I’m immensely proud of my service. If I’ve learned anything, I’ve learned what a truly remarkable thing it is to be a combat veteran. Now I want to live an exceptional life for those who never made it home.

2009 - River City Triathlon - Logansport, IN
Came out third in the swim and realized that I would have to be superman to maintain my place the rest of the race. Absolutely hammered on the bike. What a learning experience.

I was thinking it was '87, but come to find out it was the '86 Eagle Creek Tri Indianapolis. My dad did the entire race right next to me what a memory.

400m/11mi/2mi
finished third in the Clydesdale Category (barely still a Clydesdale - down 115 lbs at race time)
I broke my collar bone a couple weeks after this race and missed the rest of my first season
#2 is Texas 70.3 on April 1
Sorry, there are no photos of me in my spandex.

2000 Falmouth Sprint, Falmouth MA. Ocean swim with a decent cross current and chop, I learned the hard way how important sighting is as I kept going way off course. Bike course was open to traffic and got bogged down as it went through Woods Hole just after a ferry from the Vineyard had come in. Run finished on the beach. Fun race on a very hot day.

1986 Milton Ontario. 16 years old. 1km, 40ish km, 10km. Swam in a speedo, pulled bike shorts over top with a tshirt in T2. Steel road bike, 10 speed, no aero anything. Tennis shoes and toe clips, then changed into runners and running shorts. Didn't bring a water bottle or any food. Not sure why I kept changing outfits.
Finished in the top 30 OA. The next year I was faster and finished only top 100 OA. The sport really exploded in my area about then.
I did that one too! Boy those were the days, I remember I wore my hockey helmet because I wasn't sure if I'd ever do another one.
No one cared, rules just said you needed a helmet. Rode my Dad's 10 speed, no clue what I was doing, no spare anything!
I remember swimming beside a guy that was wearing Ray Ban Aviator sunglasses, the ones that held on over the ears!
I almost drowned laughing! Good times!

1985 Nautilus Triathlon, Emerald loop Cleveland, OH
Non standard distances, ending with a five mile run. It had one water stop at the turn around with those 4oz. dixie cups. About a mile from the finish there was a drinking fountain, I wanted to stop there sooo bad. I push through to the finish and immediately ask the RD where the water is and he says, "We don't have any here, but about a mile back up the run course......"

Cane Creek Park Sprint Tri near Waxhaw (just outside Charlotte, NC) in July 1991.
A couple of triathletes who occasionally joined our lunch run group at work talked me into it in June. I borrowed a bike from one them and spent a month going to the pool a couple of times a week with the other until I was able to survive a 1/2 mile of continuous swimming.
Three wave on-the-beach start = my first taste of open water MMA. Very unprepared for that. Survived the swim. Casually cruised the bike. Passed tons of people on the run. I was hooked! :)

Inaugural Milwaukee Lakefront Triathlon (2009), Olympic Distance
Water was 43 degrees - I was wearing a 25 year old women's farmer john wetsuit and got hypothermia so bad that I couldn't talk or walk for more than a few steps. Got detained by paramedics for 40 minutes but finished the race! Ignoring my time spent in a blanket and my T1 time, the rest of the race went fine.
A bunch of people got severe hypothermia that day - I don't think the triathlon ever came back

The where and when is less fun than the "How".
I hadn't trained AT ALL, but I knew the swimming was my best so I used the impossible-to-fail strategy of "be so far ahead after the swim that no one can catch me!"
By the time I started the run I was cramping from my knees to my nipples and trying my hardest to not throw up while I walked.
And this was for a sprint tri. Hahahaha.
