Out of curiosity, why do you need more than 1 or two spares? I have never used more than 2 spare tubes in a year.....up tp 5k miles.

I've gone years with only a flat or two a year, but I've also had years (like last year) where I'd bet I had 8-10 flats.

I'd be lucky if I replaced 2 tubes over the past 4 or 5 years. I've been thinking of replacing them because they are getting old.
What sort of blowouts/flats are you getting that you are worried about buying bulk tubes?

they're not all for me, either. Will split up with 3-5 riding buddies. Plus I have the wifes ride to worry about.

I'd love to, if a flat tire didn't cost me $10. And before you launch into a rant about how little money $10 is, would you give me $8 for no reason? No? Why not?
Also, I ride a $800 second-hand tri bike.

Why in the world would one single flat tire cost $10? Don't you guys ever patch your tubes? I use tubes with four or five patches before I even consider throwing them away and while using them I never ever have problems with the patched sections. Of course I still get flats but not because my tubes are patched. Heck I even patch my tubulars by removing the stitches, patching the tubes, and stitching them back up. I have four bikes, and seven sets of wheels and for the past four years, I have probably bought a total of just six inner tubes.

interesting statement ... what if you have 5-6 local bike shops ( i have 6 less than 20 miles away) then what??? and why should you pay 30% mark up on items you can get online for much less?? I work hard for my money like everyone else, why should you pay more? I do buy from my local bike shop, mainly Bikes and always on sale!!!

THIS.
I won't go that far and patch up my tubulars, but I patch up inner tubes quite often. Kinda fun actually, especially when you realize how much $$$ you are saving by doing so.

My tubulars are used only for racing so I don't get a lot of tubular flats; about 1 every year and a half. As such I haven't been patching my tubulars a lot.

Tube: $7.50 here
CO2: $2.00
Tax: 0.085%, and you're over $10.
I do patch my tubes, but then only use fresh tubes for spares. Sometimes patches fail, and so I want to see if they will hold air overnight before I use their for a repair.
Ultimately, you will end up needing new tubes, even when patching. At that point, I refuse to spend one Chipotle burrito extra for each one.

why use CO2?
a good hand pump from lezyne/topeak/blackburn costs 20 dollars. that's ten CO2s. the hand pump can be used for years ( mine is 6 years and still going strong), pump to at least 100 psi, and I've used it out on the roads at least fifty times. you can't screw up with a hand pump like you can a CO2. if your riding partner flats, helping him out wont cost you a CO2. just air. sure, maybe it weighs more, but the good pumps nowadays are ridiculously light and I never ever realise they are there.
CO2 are race day item luxuries. why throw money away when it doesnt matter?

This.
My zefal is around 18 years old and still pumps sweet air. The Co2s are for racing.

Because they are a convenience for those who don't want to attach yet another item to the frame and spend ten minutes pumping up a flat tire with a hand pump when a cartridge will do it instantaneously. Like the countless other conveniences we use. Everyone has different thresholds for what is convenient.
