ITU (cross) tri and XTERRA SE Championship confusion?

Mabye I've missed it in the emails from XTERRA regarding the SE Championship in Pelham, AL on May 19, but if I'm reading them right, it seems only those who qualify for the ITU team can race the Championship distance? The site has a link to register for the Sprint distance and states that those who do not qualify for the ITU team can still race the Championship distance. Am I supposed to try to qualify for the ITU team (which I don't qualify for) and when I'm notified I when I don't qualify for the team, am I automatically entered into the SE Championship? Just wondering if anyone out there is as confused as I am on this...

Yeah, it seems like every year there is a clusterfuk regarding this race. Albeit, this year is quite different, its still a cluster. My buddy signed up for it (def not an qualified ITU athlete) and the next day they shut registration down.
He forwarded me the email he was just sent and it sounds like they have a waiver process if you do not qualify. This has always been a smaller race where they have basically been begging people to sign up so it doesnt surprise me they aligned with ITU. Just sucks for the regular folk as there aren't too many off road tris of this distance around the SE....at least that I know of.
Was really looking forward to this one this year and until they say no, I guess I still am.
Dear XTERRA Athlete,
Thank you for your entry for the XTERRA SouthEast Championship race. You have probably heard by now or have received an email announcement that this race is now going to be the ITU World Championship. This is very exciting news for the venue and for our athletes. The ITU race will take the place of the SouthEast Championship race, therefore it is now a qualifiers only race. In other words you had to have qualified for an ITU race last year in order to race in the full distance. The qualifications are if you had qualified for ITU World's last year or had placed in the top 5 in your age group at the XTERRA Richmond, Waco or Beaver Creek. USAT will be offering a "waiver" for those who did not qualify last year. We will be posting an application on our website and you will be able to download, fill it out and send it to USAT for an exemption.
We are offering a "Sprint" distance if you are interested and I can switch you to that race and issue a partial refund for the difference.
Please let me know if you would like a full refund or I could switch you to the Sprint distance.
We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
Have a great race season,
Ann Mickey

Great, This means that we have to go to Richmond to qualify for Maui.
I wonder how difficult it's going to be to get an exemption into the championship race based upon results in the road tri's.

My guess is if you have qualified for Maui in the past, especially in Pelham, that you would get a waiver. Even after aligning with ITU I just don't see this filling up. They haven't even been close in past years. What's puzzling for me is why they would change the run course if they knew it might be an ITU championship. It sounds like they watered it down quite a bit (which I am not completely opposed to).

This situation is turbo frustrating. Your friend's email states that the ITU will be "in place of the SE Championship". Where the article on xterraplanet.com this morning states: "The ITU Cross Tri World Championships will be held
in conjunction with
the seventh-annual XTERRA Southeast Championship race with local support from Shelby County, City of Pelham, City of Hoover, Oak Mountain State Park and the Birmingham Urban Mountain Pedalers (BUMP)."
Which is it XTERRA???
It blows my mind why XTERRA would change this. IMO off-road tri's aren't supported as much as I wished they were, there aren't too many perennial XTERRA events, there definitely aren't enough in the SE regions and now they make it virtually impossible for non-qualified ITU racers to race a Championship distance, earn points and try to earn a slot to Worlds. Arrrggghhh!!!

It still looks like there will be an "Open" race for those that do not qualify to be on team USA for the ITU race.
"In addition to the ITU Cross Tri World Championship races XTERRA will also host open sprint and championship distance off-road triathlons for those that do not qualify."
I still wonder which race is going to have the qualifying spots for Maui.

Right, that's the frustrating part. It's not clear how to specifically get into the SE Championship. XTERRA has not definititively said how this will or should be done.

If Xterra is making this race exclusive for the ITU cross qualifiers, I think they are really missing it. I didn't race off-road last year. Was planning on Xterra to be my "bread and butter" races this year. I live in the southeast and there are very few races within driving distance to accumulate points for the Xterra US championship. I realize that it's a big deal to have the ITU champs here. Heck, I support it. I'd love to watch that kind of race...but do it on the Sunday and the Xterra race on that Saturday. Are that many folks doing the ITU Cross race already planning on doing the Xterra SE championship? I doubt it, or at least doubt it from an amateur standpoint.
If this race is setup like we are interpreting it, it will be a pretty big fail on the part of Xterra. Come on Xterra....use common sense. Don't have the locals and their money go somewhere else.

I think the FAQs under the "Athlete Info" tab answers most of the questions in this thread.

Hi guys, sorry so late to the forum, and thanks Shawn for putting up the FAQ link for us – it does indeed answer most of the questions here[/url].
Cjathey – if you qualified last year, you’re qualified for this year and should have got an email from USAT. If not, email them at
teamusa@usatriathlon.org
.
Herbie – if you’re fast enough to be in the hunt for a qualifying spot to Maui then you’ll get accepted to Team USA and can race for one at the ITU Cross Tri Worlds/XTERRA SE Championship race. Write
teamusa@usatriathlon.org
with a link to your best finish from last year.
Apenton – I see from your post on our forum that your email to USAT has been received and you’re just waiting on an answer (good luck).
Jheebner – The course is not watered down. For age groupers the bike is same big 30K loop as year’s past, and the run is two laps of sweet singletrack around Double Oak Lake. The pros will do three laps on the bike around the lake, creating the most spectator friendly course we’ve ever put together.
Jhightower – I’m including XTERRA Race Director Dave Nicholas’ response to a similar post on our forum here…
Dave Nicholas wrote… “Hey folks, our intent is not to hold people out of the Alabama race. As the host nation we can have 30 or so people in every age group. What you need to do is send an email to USA Tri teamusa@usatriathlon.org and get a slot. If you qualified for the 2011 team you are automatically qualified for 2012.
As a couple examples; in 2011 the biggest age group of all in Pelham was 35-39 with 24 entrants. As for points? I am waiving the "foreign athlete can block points" rule and we will award XTERRA points only to USA citizens. I am doubling the Maui slots for this race to serve your peers from around the world and our own homegrown Xterra athletes.
ITU had no cross triathlon scheduled for 2012. There is a rumor that ITU has first choice of a test or new event for the 2016 Olympics. Cross triathlon and relay were the two top choices. Because there was no cross world champ race for this year, ITU went ahead and sanctioned several relay road tris in anticipation. As the grandfather of XTERRA I was not pleased and went way out on a limb to start negotiations with the ITU and pulled off a last minute sanction that was well beyond all the rules from the ITU. ITU has been super cooperative and it is appreciated.
What you will see are roughly 400 and maybe more triathletes from all over the world coming to your home country. We'll bring the eyes of the triathlon world to Alabama and the USA and show the ITU what the hell a cross triathlon should be. I was the manager for Team USA at the cross champs last year and what they put forward in Spain was a not XTERRA.
So please don't hold this against us. I will go to bat for each one of you and every other loyal XTERRA person who wants in. My guess is that 90% of you will be accepted to Team USA and when you are, I want to see your smiling faces in the red white and blue ready to knock the socks off the rest of the world.”

Wow. I had absolutely no plan to make the trip down there but if I can get in and get creamed by hundreds of pros from around the world, I might have to make the journey. Are there any weird ITU uniform requirements or any other odd rules we should be aware of?

Not weird, if you get in you'll have the honor of wearing the Team USA kit (of course, you'll have to buy it)...this is Seth Wealing in last year's uni...

thanks for the clarification Trey. I have raced Xterra since 1998 and traveled to Nationals and other major events for many years, also winning MANY regional events as well. Then...of course...I dont race a single Xterra in 2011...doh.
I was hoping to come to Birmingham and hopefully the powers that be at Team USA will allow me to race off of past palmares.
Good on Xterra for stepping up!

thanks for the clarification Trey. Here's to hoping I am not in the 10%. Waiver app will be emailed later tonight. Long shot as I didn't do any off-road stuff last year and didn't have the best showing in 2010 at Pelham. Hence my comment about not completely being against a watered down run. That run left me in rough shape.

The 18 mile loop is terrible, especially for the 35-39 and 50-54 age group. It has a section called Blood Rocks for Petes sake.

That's the best section! The 18 mile loop has everything. Single track, big climbs, fast descents, rock gardens...awesomeness.

lol, I raced it a bunch of times over the years at their annual "BUMP n Grind" event. The blood rock section is maybe 50 yards, so you could portage it and lose almost nothing. What makes it particularly bad for just those two age groups?

I watched some youtube videos of "BLOOD ROCK" and can't believe it's even a named feature let alone the most terrifying thing on the course.
Watching videos of triathletes makes me feel like a mtb rockstar.
