I have done 3 races by Premiere Event Management (Bill Burke's company), including the inaugural NOLA 70.3. I have been very disappointed in all 3 races. When I contacted the company each time to address problems after each race, they never accept responsibility for anything. For the inaugural NOLA 70.3, Bill actually blamed the athletes for the lack of water on the bike course and for the athletes not being prepared! I will not do another one of his races.

Looks like the run course was updated on the website, along with the 2012 participant list. Run is now finishing at the University of New Orleans Technology Park, where transition is. Very disappointing, to say the least. For me, the allure of this race was finishing in the Quarter.

Yep, I'm out because of the run change. Plus the fact that the swim has actually happened once over the 3/4 year period?
The one thing the city has to offer IMO (the French Quarter) and you take it out of the equation? I know it's a nightmare to put together like that, but the finish line in Jackson Square was right up there, if not better, than the Ironman man finish lines I've done and now to take it away for the UNO campus? Not a good move

Agree, I did it last year, was frustrated by the lack of swim and the only thing that made it a remotely enjoyable experience was the final 2 miles of the run down Esplanade into the quarter.
Just running around in NOLA suburbs sounds like a nightmare.

To be specific, the swim did take place the first 2 years, and was canceled the third year. That same year the 5150 swim was also canceled.
It is too bad that the run doesn't finish in the FQ this year. The only positive is that will be easier logistically for the athletes, their followers and the race management.
FWIW, to the other poster, I've done many PEM/B. Burke races and enjoyed them all. The first IMNOLA 70.3 water sitch was unfortunate and the management response was poor, but the following year that issue and others were fixed.

Not to be doom and gloom, but this course will also provide nearly no shade at all for the first 6 or so miles and for the last 4 or 5. Maybe some reprieve for that little bit in the park, but that is it.
Going to get hardcore if it is warm out.

The website is down for me....But it still says "Come race through the city of New Orleans and finish in front of Jackson Square in the French Quarter!".
I'm 50/50 on doing this race. I live in Chicago, so it's pricey to go to Nola for 3 nights. Can't decide either way.

Agreed, this race will be off the map in the next year I wager. The allure certainly was the run down Esplanade, hang a right onto Decatur, and the finish in front of Jackson Square.
With a cancelled swim last year and now this finish at UNO, this race WILL lose participants. Heck, WTC may as well not even call is "NOLA 70.3." Why not call it the "Metairie 70.3"?
All sarcasm aside, they may as well move the packet pickup/expo out to UNO. Why ask all of the participants to drive to downtown just to get their packets and then EVERYTHING else is out at UNO for the rest of the weekend? There is no incentive to stay downtown anyhow, may as well stay at a hotel off of I-10.
WTC screwed this great event up in a big way. Sad.

RE: Commemoration Event Activities
New Orleans will serve as the inaugural city in a three-year national celebration commemorating the War of 1812 and the Star-Spangled Banner. The celebration will take place April 17 – 23, 2012, featuring a memorable Air Show with the Navy’s famed Blue Angels and a colorful spectacle of ships along the East Bank of the Mississippi River. The U.S. Navy’s amphibious warship USS Wasp, along with other large navy vessels, will welcome Class A tall ships from countries around the world to New Orleans for the celebration. Ships will be open for public visiting. (New Orleans will also host the final event of the Bicentennial in 2015, marking the 200th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans.)
The Blue Angels Air Show is among the many other activities schedule to take place in the city that week. The Air Show is scheduled on Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22 and is planned to take place over Lake Pontchartrain behind the eastern portion of the UNO Main Campus stretching to the Lakefront Airport, with the official designated viewing area located behind UNO East Campus and SUNO. (See diagram below.)
The University of New Orleans is working closely with the organizers of the event, who expect to draw crowds of 40,000 – 50,000. The University plans to use the East Campus grounds as well as portions of the main campus for paid parking. UNO parking decals will be given access to the campus and parking areas will be designated for the UNO community. All details are still being worked out.
That weekend is also the annual Ironman Triathlon on Sunday which creates additional challenges
. That event takes place along the lakefront as well and uses portions of the university grounds, Lakeshore Drive, and various public streets. All parties are working together to make sure the events do not conflict with each other.
But despite the considerable amount of planning, very little can be done to avert the tremendous amount of traffic that will occur that weekend when 40,000-50,000 spectators converge on the lakefront
.
The reason for this email is to ask the entire UNO Community for assistance.
All departments are asked to refrain from as many activities as possible on the main campus on Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22, 2012. Ingress and egress to the University of New Orleans will be extremely challenging and any planned activity on the campus will most certainly be affected. Please consider rescheduling those activities planned for that weekend to another weekend or relocate them to the Jefferson Campus or another venue away from this area. Space is limited, so you are asked to take this as an opportunity to avoid any possible last minute issues. If you would like to schedule your activity in Metairie, please email or call:
If there is an event or activity that positively must take place on that weekend, departments are asked to notify Campus Booking so plans can be executed accordingly. While it is strongly suggested that all activities that weekend are rescheduled or relocated, everything will be done to work with departments that must schedule events that on these days. If you would like to schedule your activity at the main campus on Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22, 2012, please email or call:
This event is being hosted by the city and provides excellent opportunities for the University. Lakefront Arena Management is overseeing all Main Campus, East Campus and Jefferson Campus activities and will work with all departments to insure the least disruption as possible. That weekend will be hectic and everyone is doing everything that can be done to avoid as much inconveniences as possible.

And the hits just keep on coming. March 7th is the last date to request the partial ($75) refund. I need to really think about this. I can live with the run change. I don't like it but I can deal with it. Having all this shit going on at UNO during the same time is just going to make it a pain in the ass. Hmmmmmm....

UNO barely had enough parking for the 70.3 as it was before, and that was when a good amount of the athletes were carpooling or taking shuttles from the hotel. Now, add to it the airshow traffic?!?! This is going to be a nightmare.

The plus is that the racers will be there long before the air show folks, as far as parking is concerned; late arriving spectators on the other hand, not good.
My bigger worry is that all these folks will be walking along and across lakeshore and other parts of the lakefront as a couple thousand cyclists go by in aero position.

In all honesty, when I registered for this event I did so with the expectation of running into Jackson Square for the finish instead of a meandering course through the neighborhoods of Lakeview. Ironman New Orleans should step up and offer refunds to those who relied on the course from last year when they registered.

I sent them the following email:
I apologize if you have been inundated with emails regarding the new run course and the issues regarding other events at the Univ. of New Orleans the same weekend but I would like to express my concerns.
Part of the allure of the 70.3 race in New Orleans was the run and finish in the French Quarter. That was a major factor in why I registered for the event. That's extremely unique to the city and cannot be matched anywhere else. I was very disappointed when it was decided the 5150 race would be held on the same day and the run course was changed to finish in City Park. There is nothing unique about finishing in a park. The 5150 decision was then reversed and it looked like the run course would once again finish in the French Quarter. The latest run course has the race finishing at the Univ. of New Orleans... once again taking away from the uniqueness of the course and the event. Parking in an around New Orleans is always an issue. Will the expo and packet pickup be moved to the Univ. of New Orleans area since the race is now completely centered there? It's almost unfair to have people go downtown, struggle with and pay for parking to just pickup a packet and then drive out to the University to drop off our bikes. I know that's how things were done in the past but it now seems ridiculous considering the race goes nowhere near downtown or the Quarter.
Then there's the news that an airshow will be happening at the Univ. of New Orleans the same weekend as the 70.3. That event is expected to draw 40,000-50,000 spectators to the University area. Parking and traffic in an around the University was difficult enough for race participants and their families/friends in the past so what will it be like with 50,000 additional people at the same exact location? It sounds like a logistical nightmare. What about safety concerns on the bike and run course with all that additional traffic? I have copied the text of an email sent to the Univ. of New Orleans faculty and staff earlier this week. It reads as follows:
TO: All Faculty and Staff
FROM: Peter J. Fos, President

FYI - For all those Fbook users, the race director will be answering questions next Tuesday:
We have gotten a great response from everyone with the race director's chats! We are going to keep them coming, and will feature
Ironman 70.3
New Orleans next. Go to the Ironman 70.3 page on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 3 p.m. EST with any race related questions and race director Bill Burke will give you your answers! And also this was just posted on the Ironman website:
New Orleans is known as one of the most culturally rich destinations in America. Once a year, this city steeped in art, history and music, plays host to Ochsner Ironman 70.3 New Orleans. Athletes travel from all over to take part in this unique event and scenic course, which flows throughout this fascinating area.

On April 22, athletes will begin their day on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, swimming 1.2 miles, point-to-point along the Lakeshore Drive seawall. The journey continues with the 56-mile, out-and-back bike course, followed by a 13.1-mile run along the lakefront. Competitors will finish on the campus of the University of New Orleans Research and Technology Park to the sound of live music. “The Big Easy,” as the city is famously called, is a favorite event among racers, as well as spectators. With strong influences from diverse places like France, Africa and the Caribbean Islands, New Orleans is filled with an endless variety of things to discover and explore. Visitors can sample delectable cuisine at famous restaurants like Antoine’s and Acme Oyster House, or venture to a more casual spot like Café Du Monde or Ralph’s on the Park. Music is everywhere in New Orleans, but some of the best venues to soak in some jazz, zydeco or blues are the Spotted Cat, House of Blues and Preservation Hall. Finally, there is a tour option for everyone; whether you are a history buff or paranormal thrill-seeker, these guided excursions offer visitors of all interests a chance to learn about the city’s intriguing past.
This year, Ochsner Ironman 70.3 New Orleans will offer something extra for visitors to enjoy; the event will be held on the same weekend as Navy Week, the 200th celebration of the Battle of New Orleans, which took place during the War of 1812. Festivities will be held throughout race week, including an air show from the United States Navy’s Blue Angels, at Lakefront Airport. In addition, various flight demonstrations will be flying over bike check-in from 1 to 4 PM on Saturday, as well as over the finish line area from 1 to 4 PM on Sunday. Athletes and spectators will be able to enjoy these shows from the race site, free of charge, as part of race weekend.
