Good thread. I've been thinking of getting some type of music for the pool too.
I'm leaning toward the swimman type shuffle.

Get the Finis. I have heard great things. Do not get a waterproof Ipod with ear buds. Youll spend more time messing with the ear buds than swimming, and they still wont work. Waste of $250 here.

Got the waterproofed IPod shuffle for Christmas, works great! Had been using the Finis forva few years, like the shuffle much better and it is more versatire.

WOW! That's quite the recommendation. I've never heard of a documented case of someone enjoying fugazi, so the swimp3 must be top notch. I'll pick one up, maybe I can get some use out of these old Rick Astley albums.

Completely false. I have been using a waterprrof iPod shuffle for a few months and have yet to have an issue with my ear buds. And mine was only $150, but damn if I can remember which company I got it from......

I also got the waterproof shuffle for Christmas, and use the earbuds that look like plugs. I love them. Laps used to be torture! No problems with the shuffle or the earbuds.

Very legit. I've used the H2OAudio cases for many years, but recently switched to
WaterFi
. They buy a real iPod shuffle from Apple and waterproof it with some kind of coating. You can't really tell any difference except that the buttons are little stiffer. They also have a iPod Nano version, but it's a bit pricey. The reason I switched was convenience and size. You can't get any smaller than a naked iPod shuffle, and there's no case to bother with. Just clip it onto my goggle strap and go. I've used it since January swimming 3-5 sessions a week and haven't had any problems.
The YMMV part is the headphones. I've never had much luck with in-ear buds (non-waterproof variety), so I've concluded that I must have unusually shaped ear canals. Unfortunately, the best sound requires a good in-ear seal. In my case, most earbuds (waterproof and not) simply won't stay in, and I've tried dozens of different tips. Finally found a set that works for me, though. It's the "tree tip" model from the H2OAudio

Another vote for the H2OAudio. I have the "Interval" model which is the Ipod shuffle attached to the back of the goggle version.
I had the SwiMP3 and it lasted all but 3 months until the USB port rusted. They replaced the unit, but it happened again even after taping the cover shut with electrical tape while swimming. I could never seem to get it loud enough either. I received the H2OAudio and new Shuffle as a gift and they work great... plus now I have a shuffle for treadmill and trainer and pre-race.
I know a guy at my pool who has the refurb'd waterproof Shuffle (forget the brand) and he seems to like it, but complains that the cord they provided with it got in his way when swimming. I think they have a full replacement warranty too, but not sure.

Sorry it took so long to respond...the cord gets in the way every once in a while, but not frequently. I do one wrap of the cord around my goggle cord on the back of my head and only leave enough cord to then go directly from the goggle cord to my ears. any excess cord from the arm band to the goggle cord, I can usually maintain or keep out of by way by keeping it directed to by back. Using a swim cap does help keep the water out and a good seal
