The secret is out. Now I know why and how Damon, despite a crazy work/travel schedule, with I am sure little time to actually ride, is able to come out to our club time-trials and road races and and keeps us all honest! Squats with DZ on his back!

Great questions Tom! And very clearly laid out for answers:
1. The S5 is a road bike with road geometry, so fit alone makes it hard to compare to the P-series. I would suggest very few customers would struggle to decide between them.
2. No. Where there is a trailing element (down tube at bottle, seat stays at brake caliper, seat tube cutout at rear wheel) an interrupted foil makes perfect sense. Elsewhere on the S5 (head tube, upper half of the down tube, seat tube) the trailing edge is that of a full airfoil for best performance.
3. Lower drag than S3 at all yaw angles (see wind tunnel data in the white paper).
4. (a) For speed, aero is the primary benefit. Saving 9 to 30 Watts over other road bikes is huge. ;-) (b) For riding pleasure, aero is the primary benefit. I'm just so much more happy and comfortable saving 9-30 Watts over the guys I ride with.
5. No. The S5 is an S-series Cervelo. The R-series is still a touch lighter and stiffer.
6. Yes. At Cervelo we apply to every project all the engineering know how that makes sense.
7. Everyone who rides a road bike is the customer. There has always been a large percentage of riders who don't think they deserve an aero road bike. The S5 helps them perform better and have more fun too.

Correct, except technically the P4 fork is named FK25. It has a slight nose cone (behind the brake) to match the P4 aero head tube.
FK26 is the very next design (FK26 follows FK25), and is identically shaped (so very low drag), with the only difference being the top of FK26's crown is shaped to better match to the round head tubes of the P3 and S5.
Both FK25 and FK26 forks are laterally stiffer than the forks that come on the S3 and S2.

It saddens me that Cervelo would give the first exclusive peak (though we've all seen the bike) and test ride to a publication that has to tell it's readers to google Paris-Roubaix.
The other way to look at it would be that this does not affect the coverage this bike and therefore cycling gets in the cycling magazines, but it will increase the coverage for cycling in a non-cycling magazine. So in total, it means more exposure for our sport (if it wasn't the S5 in Wired, they would have highlighted some Wifi toaster or Facebook enabled running shoe, not another bike)
Wow, I didn't expect this to elicit a response from Gerard himself. I was really only being half serious. Really it's sad that more people outside of cycling don't know what Paris-Roubaix is, not so much that the S5 is being featured in Wired. That's actually pretty cool. But I kinda want to see that Facebook enabled running shoe. Maybe you guys should add that for the S6!

Believe me, I know cycling is a foreign sport to most of America. It just sucks that all they see is the Tour de France, because there are many (IMO) more entertaining races. I know that's not going to change anytime soon. All I was saying was that it's a sad commentary on the state of cycling in America that most people don't know the name of the biggest single day race in cycling. Maybe that will change when Phinney wins it a few times ;)

The really interesting thing from an industry perspective is the change in Cervelo's model structuring.
Traditionally, Cervelo has had single "models" and differentiated by parts kit. The S5 appears to be in line with what most manufacturers do, adjust model price by carbon layup and quality.
I'm curious to see what the 2012 line up holds. Because it seems to me that things will have to change, because the S2, S3, S5 pricing and structure right now doesn't make as much sense.
