haven't published in the area yet as I switched recently to bioinformatics...I am interested in developing 'tools' (both practical and theoretical) to model gene interaction and gene expression from microarrays (essentially using techniques derived from game theory) in cancer research (made the switch to this area soon after my father in law passed away this year...of cancer)
have a paper in the works (an extension of probabilistic boolean networks).
Berkeley is pretty cool indeed...however, they pressure young faculty a lot...so less time to train...(significantly less time I'd say)...

it's true that I checked the website and it looks very very interesting...probably the only places in the US who could match that are SCRIPPS in SD, USC (as M. waterman is there) and MD Anderson in Houston where they are doing really great things (and they have a lot of microarray data avail. with their research center)

You hit a lot of the reasons why I loved living in Ann Arbor, but the weather there does truly suck and suck mightily. Cold and dark all the time.
Other Florida options- Tallahassee- two big universities, culture, reasonable cost of living, lots of hilly roads to bike just outside of town, not too far from the Gulf.
Scripps South Florida- think they're going in somewhere around Boca Raton. Housing costs in South Florida have gone up in recent years, but are still not as bad as San Diego.

Although I wouldn't really ever recommend it, St.Louis seems to fit your qualifications. I live here, would like to move, but I don't like humidity and winter.
We have really hot summers, with god awful humidity. We have a real freaking winter, always some snow, ice, cold, wind, it's awesome... not.
Washington Univsersity, St.Louis University, and other small well known midwestern colleges.
Suburbs are nice. Good hilly rides. Alot of races from sprints up to half ironman within 45 minutes. Could have more open water options. Good tight tri community. Good calendar of running races and cycling events. 3 ITU pros from here who come home to train alot. Check out
www.swimbikerunstlouis.com
I love sushi. We have about 8 places I frequent.
I can get anywhere within 30 minutes, of course I've lived here along time to learn those routes, but it's manueverable unlike other big cities.

...without mentioning that you could at last meet your Berkeley Idol, WH!
By the way, I understand that they do quite a bit of gene mapping here at UCSC, but that sounds a little different from what you are talking about.

I second the RTA. I went to UNC for undergrad. Great running trails and cycling community. University pools are very good too. Weather is pretty good - humid but not oppressive, cool winters but very bearable and usually no snow.

Go to NC. I live in Ohio and spend 3-4(2-3 weeks in Raleigh, and 1-2 weeks at the beach) weeks in NC a year. That is where I will be moving in the next couple of years.

I you go a little West there is Kalamazoo. We have Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College. The biking is better here than in Ann Arbor, but the swim programs are not as good. We have many great trails for running, biking, etc.
We get more snow than Ann Arbor because of our proximity to Lake Michigan, but along with that, you have great opportunities for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, etc. But, we will go without sunshine for a few days in the winter.
There are many lakes for open water swim training. In fact, you can swim open water from May through September.
Our tri club is very active (
www.trikats.com
) with lots of group training. I actually moved here from AZ, and really like the lifestyle.

Hey Francois, I built a Beowulf cluster (29 400 MHz drones and a 1.5 GHz master) last year on a whim if you have the algorithms, I fire it up and crush so numbers for you.

we also have built one here (on an HPC grant).
(42 Xeon proc. 240 peak gflops, 3Gbytes of mem, and 80GB of disk)...also have some IBM stuff with 1Tbytes of disk, an linux/itanium cluster...cool stuff.
where are you working to do things like this?
UNM with McCabe?

Working? This is what I do in my spare time as a network administrator. Tons of old computers nobody wants + automated most of my administration tasks = lots of time on my hands. I just like math, I'm not really good at Large Number Theory and stuff but I like to beat up on encryption algorithms. I have a three layer hardware specific (Intel only though) encryption I wrote two 128 bit custom algorithms and a blowfish wrapper, good stuff.
I'm trying to figure out if I can make BOINC run on my cluster if not I'll separate them out and run the climate predictor individually. Thats the project for this month at least.
You've got some serious horse power there on your cluster. I know a guy at Sandia National labs who works in there supercomputing division, I asked him about a few of their systems, when he reached the newest one his answer was "None of your damn business" in a much nicer way. Unfortunately that is pretty much a PhD only division.

but then look at the really cool stuff in cryptography...the new algorithms based on elliptic curves and these still in the works based on algebraic geometry (tough to read though...)
if that stuff interests you, why don't you do a PhD then? lots of cool jobs for cryptographers (specially those good in theoretical and practical stuff)

I don't want to start a degree program since my wife and I plan to expat after the 05-06 school year. Australia, Spain, France, New Zealand and Holland are all in the running right now. Spain did drop down after the terrorist attacks when my wife asked me about them I said 'Oh those Basque separatists are always blowing shit up.' not the wisest choice of word.

I'd choose New Zealand...love the place...Australia (depending on where you go) is a bit dangerous for cycling...freakin' targets for kids in utes (trucks).

Spain isn't that bad, you gotta get used to Spanish mentality, which is very different to yours and also mine. My parents live in Spain since 1984 and they are still alive! The ETA didn't get them as yet. There is also a great difference between Northern Spain ( the Atlantic coast ) and all the rest. I LOVE Asturias...a region most people have never heard of! But which is most beautiful!

I spent some time in Melbourne, Sydney, and Hobart. I really liked Hobart ,there is a women's college in the old section of town ;). English speaking countries have a little higher standing for me since I suck at picking up languages. We meet the immigration guidelines for Australia, I haven't checked into New Zealand as much. We figure what the hell, no kid, why not spend some time expanding our world view.

I always wanted to go to Tasi on vacation, but never managed to get there. If you don't mind living at some end of this world, you will definitely like Hobart. Tasmanias nature is said to be just great! Anmd Tasmanian oysters are the BEST! In case you ever meet the Tasmanian Devil, żou better run! :-)

I saw a few tasmanian devils at the wildlife preserve on Victoria Peak just outside Hobart. The guide threw a couple of rabbit head into the pin. Those little guys crushed the heads, they were biting each other, themselves, snapping and snarling. The cartoon has nothing on the real thing.

The New Specialized Wind Tunnel
Will this be a game changer for Specialized, in both sales and product design, or will it not move the sales and design needle versus those in Specialized's competitive set?
