With the exception of Ertel (who may have finally blown a gasket), it's shaped up to be a tactical bike. Maybe they're counting on Fernandes possibly not having a good run, as Fitz says her last couple of races have gone poorly. Maybe peaked too soon?

I'm pretty sure it was the freezing water and weather that has done her in lately, won't have that problem today....

Yes, 20 in the lead group there. I agree.

Now, let's loook at the places to attack here as we get down to a final set of three laps. With all the banter about the blue matting in the stadium it makes sense to launch an attack just prior to re-entering the stadium. A lone rider- or small group- can get over tha matting and up and over that little ramp more easily than a group of 20. That may be a factor.

If they did get away then they are out of sight of the chaser very quikly. The smart chasers would use the mega-screens around the course to watch the action up front though, as Hincapie failed to do in a prevous Olympic road race...

She went to the front before the hill and it looked like the red sea parting as she came back. But she's just catching on again.

Ertel and Haskins there at the back. This seems rather deliberate on the part of the... Oh, big attempt by the Italina there to try to bridge. That will be quite a bit of wrok but a bold move.

that really blew the chasers up a bit.

Ah ha, you see Ertel there, very smart, stretching, saving her legs. Quite a cagey athlete.

what you are watching is the common feed from the cameras covering the event. Directors etc put the pieces together in real-time, and commentary is "overlaid" by each of the networks. For example, you will see EXACTLY these shots on CBC with voice overs. The commentators are watching the same thing you are on small monitors and are likely provided more detailed info on status of racers, speed etc. Same as phil and paul in the tdf. NBC, CBC etc do not have their own on-course cameras set-up, but use this common video feed in their production and broadcast with talking heads. I imagine they may have some cameras assigned to specifically follow some nation's stars, too, that get piped to the right network serving that nation.

I like it, since I find some commentators very annoying.

OK, I think we may have caught a glimpse of a third group there- not quite sure....

Some action up front now. Four riders attacking just before the mat as we mentioned. Nope, it's back together. Lap 4.

I wouldn't call her horrible. SHe is actually doing the smart thing, start the climb near the front, then fade to the back. It is a great tatic when the others are better climbers than you, or you just want to save your legs from smashing the hill.. I used to have to do this all the time...
