that would be 30.5 mph for 112 miles. don't even think lance w/ his EPO could swing that ...

Where would you want to swim ?

I would think at that level you could put most of those guys on a Toys R Us special and they'd still put up impressive numbers.

So there were 18 riders with 15 different bikes. Tells me that the best bikes are pretty close. Figure if Faris started he would have been 1 for C'dale, and Norman would have been another on a Kuota.

Cervelo also had a 3-1 advantage or larger over most of these bikes in terms of raw numbers...you have to factor that out of the equation...

I doubt that we had a 3-1 advantage in the pro bikes, inf fact we probably had relatively few. I am even surprised we had 3 bike splits that fast, I didn't know we had that many male pros.

Anyway, this stat probably shows - more than that all bikes are similar - that all bike companies are similar and they sponsor one or two pros, maybe three. And then there are a group of pros that are not really sponsored, at least not by the bike companies, and they swing a deal of some sort with their local shop. I would suspect that the last group has a relatively high Cervelo-content, just like we saw at the Silverman challenge when people had a free choice of what bike to use. But at any rate, this year once again shows how tough it is to focus your brand on one superstar, some bad food and your year is over. I think it's more rewarding to focus on the athletes below that level, who really need the support just to be able to focus on a race and actually travel there. I'm very happy that we finished 1-4-5 in the women's race (and Chrissie was "only" on a P2C).

I bet if a rider of his caliber or better was able to openly train using drugs and focused hard enough that they might be able to put up numbers pretty close to that. Of course they would be destroyed for the run but they would have a pretty nice lead off the bike. Never underestimate the power of a good scientist and his client! :)

Couldn't agree more. The right cocktail, mixed with the right talent, a great coach, and a fast bike. 3:40 is possible, though the run would be extremely tough :-)

The hour record is 30.9 mph... No way any human can do 30.5 mph for 112 miles on the road, at sea level.

I'm pretty sure the hour record is coser to 35 mph. I'm not sure what the UK 100 mile TT record is but its well under 4 and I suspect not by a LA caliber rider.

But those bikes are still legal for Tri, which is what I thought we were talking about.

Kevin Dawson did 3:22 in 2003. He's nowhere near professional level but an extremely talented amateur, who holds a number of records in the UK.

3:22 is 29.7mph, which would be a 3:46 IM bike. And then a long walk.

The dominant mens pro bike...

There really is not a dominant men's pro bike. These guys ride the a bike provided by their sponsors and that comes about typically from the best deal that they can get and/or the best relationships that they have.

Sometimes what get's ridden does have an impact on sales - there does seem to be some connection in the narrow world of the Kona Bike Count and Stadler's succes on Kuota over the past few years - but has that succss translated to bigger numbers right through the tri business? Kuota has some good bikes, but I don't see a lot of them in my travels.

It will be interesting to see where, Macca's win takes the new Specialized bike and specialized tri bike sales in general. Remember that Peter Reid won on a Specialized in Hawaii a few times, but that had just OK results I would say for Specialized tri-bike businss sales because at the time Specialized did not seem to be taking the tri market that seriously. However, Specialized like all the big players seem to be taking the tri market a bit more seriously now, even using the retired Reid as a lead consultant for the new carbon Transition, as the road market seems to be on the wane.
