Valdora PHX vs Planet X (Stevens Crono/XDS-frame) question
Quote

The test EFBe did on these two frames yielded a “High” rating for the Stevens Crono (same as Planet X) frame and a “Top” rating for the Valdora frame. The Stevens frame was a size 57/L and the Valdora frame was a size 55/M.
http://www.efbe.de/...php?typ=3&sort=1
I am interested in both these bikes. The Valdora frame is lighter and obviously scored better in the EFBe test. However, the Planet X frame, in my opinion, looks so much better. Regardless of looks, I want the most for my money so here is my question.
Q: Do you think a Planet X size 51/S would have gotten a “Top” rating? I know we can only speculate. Any thoughs…?
In peace,
CQ

I don't understand what this "test" was trying to accomplish?
Yes, the Planet X should test the same as the Valdora since it is the same frameset. If it is testing "stiffness", I can attest my Planet X Stealth pro carbon is plenty stiff - as "stiff" as my Cervelo Soloist Carbon that I ride more (and costs 3 times as much).

You sure? I just saw the Valdora, which has internal cable routing. The Planet X has external cable routing on the downtube, correct?

Ah, yes - my Planet X does have external downtube routing.
I thought the Valdora was one of the many PX clones. Still don't know why the OP just doesn't get a Stealth. Stiff enough for Cadel Evans for the TT during the Tour de France as well ;-)

Rather than me explaining what the purpose of the test is you can read about it here:
http://www.efbe.de/testergebnisse/enindex.php
The XDS frame and the Valdora frame are two different frames (different molds).
The Soloist was also rated “High” in the Out-of-saddle test, same score as the XDS frame. I am glad to see you are happy with you bike. Who knows, maybe I will be joining the Planet X mafia soon…
In peace,
CQ

Ah, I see it now
and that was a Soloist - not a Soloist Carbon BTW ;-)
They did do a P3 and a P3 carbon though

Similar, but distinct looking from a Planet X. Also, no "wings" on the seat stays. Where can I get that front disc???

If the bikes are built properly, they should test the same no matter the size. If they are equal in price, I would go with the one that performs better if you "want the most for my money."
I have been on quite a few carbon bikes (Kestrels, Scotts,Trek and even a Profile/Aegis). I've never ridden a Planet X so I can't comment on it. I ride a Valdora and love it. Stiff where it should be and really stable. Geometry really works for me.
Good luck and have fun.

Interesting - the Zipp website lists the tubular version of their disk as being available as a front (see fine print near bottom of page):
http://www.zipp.com/...ortField=ISBN%2cISBN
but that's a clincher. I would therefore guess that it is a 'one of' produced by special request (just as Josh was extremely kind to not only make - well, have made - some track-specific Vuka aerobars for my wife, he/they did so in a matter of hours).

For specific PX questions, check out
www.teamplanetx.com
As for your specific questions, others here on ST will have better answers than me so I won't comment. But you might want to post any other questions you might have on the other site listed above. Many of the questions potential buyers have can be found there.
Hope this helps.

They are not at the same price, Valdora frameset cost about $2k and you can buy the XDS for less $1K.
Or am I wrong?

PX cost less than Valdora, looks better if you ask me. The whole fin thing on the seat-tube looks wierd.

I agree. My opinion isn’t very neutral: I own an XDS.
To the OP for $1K less go with the XDS and use the difference to build it up.

Thanks for all the feedback. I guess I am leaning towards a PX but if I can get a good deal on a Valdora I'll probably get it instead. So now I am just waiting for all the 08 stuff to come out so that I can score on a 07... ;-) Yes, I am a cheap bastard!!

So buy a decent used bike. Remember that most people don't train much and like to have the latest bling, so there are pretty good deals on good used bikes. I'm sure you can find a used P2C for the same price you're getting one of those generic bikes.

Acquiring the front disc isn't terribly difficult. Riding it however, could be extremely so. That isn't a track bike you're looking at there...

Thanks for the advice. I am actually also looking for used bikes, mainly on ebay. However, people are paying some ridiculous amounts for used stuff on ebay. I have not come across any really good deals. I should also probably add that I got screwed on bike deal about a year ago so I am a bit nervous about going through all that again. "As new, only 300 miles" equated to 3,000 cyclocross miles... Oh well...

Sorry for reviving an old thread - I came across this in a search.
I wanted to see if anyone has an updated opinion on the Valdora PHX vs. Planet X Exocet (or Ex2). I'm looking at each one. It will be my first foray into a carbon frame -- I currently ride a ~7 yr old QR tequilo. The good thing for me is, I can check out the PX, because Brian Ray's shop isnt that far from me. Valdora would require the call/order route, site unseen.
WHy these brands? Well, I'm having trouble justifying the additional cost for a similarly spec'ed ride from one of the big boys (trek, cervelo, etc.). Especially for a MOPer.
Any thoughts/advice are appreciated.
