Blind Ironman Injured > Last Update > 11/13 Quote | Reply

Could you PLEASE do me a favor? A long time friend of mine who is blind and a multi-time Ironman and marathon finisher was severely injured (hit by a bike while walking) and is going to be in the hospital for a long time. It would thrill him to get a card, autographed photos(yes, blind guys like this too!) , etc from the triathlon community …..he could REALLY use the encouragement and support!!

Richard Bernstein (Patient)
11 West - Room 109
Mt. Sinai Medical Center
One Gustav L. Levy Place
NY, NY 10029-6574

I appreciate your help and support! Thank you!

11/13 Update:

This will now be the last update....thank you so much to all for your encouragement and support of Ricky - it made a huge difference! Please recall that Ricky was released from the hospital on Oct 18 after a 10 week saga! He is very upbeat and passionate. He still has significant pain in his hip but is walking unaided and, he says, without a limp. He says he is "Coming Back!"

He was calling from the road. This morning he was a breakfast speaker at Walsh College and was on his way to another presentation. He sounds very good and optimistic. He has not yet started athletic training, but says that is coming. So, while he still has a long road in front of him, I think we can say he is going to make it.

Ricky again reiterated that he couldn't not have endured the saga without you. You have responded to perhaps the highest calling - making a positive difference in the life of another. Thank you!

Many, many thanks to all! This sort of thing is EXTREMELY meaningful in situations like this. I told Ricky's brother to be on the lookout for a good bit of mail.....they are in awe of the Tri community and how we come together in support in times of need.

Despite our bickering on other issues, it is amazing the way we come together when needed. Thank you!

David, I'll get one out to him to wish him well though I don't think the Winston postmark will seem as exotic as some of the others mentioned here.

Hope all is well with you. I saw you out running at lunch a while back. I'll try to make it out to some events soon (my training has become completely non-existent since we moved here last year, but my goal is to fire it back up this fall and through the winter to be ready for next spring). Cheers, John.

Monday August 27 update:

I just talked with Ricky's Dad (Dad and I call him Ricky, professionally he is Richard!) - Good news is that he is "out of the woods." His facial injuries, etc are all healing well and the doctors are optimistic on all fronts. His hip is severely fractured and that is now the most problematic for a previously independent blind person. They are estimating that he will be in the hospital around 4 weeks.

The family is very worried about Ricky's emotions during this period of time and ongoing recovery saying "you know how you all are when you can't get out and go!" They are worried that he will need a lot of encouragement. Yes we know!! SOOOOOO............ I explained the outpouring of support that is on the way and the family is moved beyond words at the concern and thoughtfulness from our community here.

Here are a couple of photos to put a face with the name:

Thank you!

Am I the only one wondering how a blind person is going to see the content of the cards? I mean the number of distinct cards would be an obvious outpouring of support, but will Mr. Bernstein be able to read them?

I feel bad for him (re: the accident with the cyclist) and don't mean to insult him with this question, but I think this is a pretty legitimate (if perhaps a little uncouth) question.

Zack, that is a great question and completely reasonable to ask. I am not an expert on blindness, but have been around a number of blind folks over the years who are amazing. So, I'll try to give you my personal, non-professional take on your question.

Ricky has had severe retinitis pigmentosa (I think that is what it is called) since birth and has been legally blind since birth. He can see a wee bit (and note this is MY description) with a huge magnifying glass held right at his eyes and paper/object literally 1 inch away and can see speck by speck. If you were in a room with him you would clearly know he is blind.

My take is that first, he will be able to visually get the gist of what he receives by doing what I described above. Next, he will have family and friends who are accustomed to reading and describing for him. Additionally, he is EXTREMELY intelligent and will be able to create visual images in his mind very quickly and piece them together. Lastly, he is very emotionally connected and he will definitely feel the emotion. Remember, folks who have been blind their whole lives have developed ways to sense every part of the world around them in ways foreign to us, but just as real as it is to us. His family has assured me that this support is huge!

Thanks!

Hey Guys - the purpose of this thread is ONLY for positive support for Ricky....no finger pointing or arguing. Note, I have never mentioned the facts b/c that is not in any way the intended purpose - only encouragement and support.

Now, for an update - Cards, etc are starting to trickle into the hospital....spirits are being lifted - YOU make a difference. The support here is amazing. Just counting what I know about, we have cards, notes, etc on their way from:

Switzerland
Canada
Indonesia
Australia (Tasmania)
Sweden
Hawaii
Germany
Mexico
England
Ireland (Dublin)

Toronto
Montreal
Winston-Salem
Boulder
London
Salt Lake City, Utah
NashVegas
Texas
IM Louisville
New Jersey
New York
I'm sure there are more that i don't know about.

I also got a PM last evening from the folks at Ironman headquarters - they are sending well wishes and a bit of IM swag in support of Ricky!

Continued thanks to all!

Here's an update on my first personal conversation with Ricky. . . I just got off the phone with him. Of course, he is going nuts being in the hospital this long, and he still has a long time to go. Please know that you all have made a huge difference! He says he's not sure he could make it without all of the support. He says his days are long and brutal. At this point they still do not have a final diagnosis or prognosis for his hip. Both the ball and the socket are severely broken. In addition, the pain is really starting to wear on him. The good news is that his facial injuries are on the mend and under control.

Direct quote regarding the cards, note, and goodies - "It really, really makes difference....I am eternally grateful." He has people reading each and every card. He says you all write beautiful things and that is what is getting him through the days. In fact, he was able to vividly describe some of the items he has received. I told him to save it all because he might have the greatest collection of Triathlete/Ironman autographs in existence! If anyone is still on the fence, please know that all encouragement is really appreciated. He also mentioned running the NYC Marathon in 2013.....he said that if it possible, he will do it!

Many thanks to all of you who contacted Ricky - You are making a difference....I got a tear in my eye when he was expressing his gratitude.

I just got off the phone with Ricky - He is still be in the same hospital room and will be for at least several more weeks. They are waiting to see how the hip and bones are healing prior to making further surgical decisions at this point. To say he is stir crazy is a massive understatement!

Ricky reiterates just how deeply meaningful the cards, notes, etc are during this period of time. He loves receiving just quick phones calls...it is like an oasis in his day! So, with his permission, I am passing along the direct dial to his hospital room 212-241-8409 - I told him to be careful what you ask for! If there is no answer, he is out for therapy or a procedure. Mornings are best to catch him. He is a passionate, intelligent, and very emotionally connected guy.

If you want to make someone's day, which will in turn make your day, give him a quick call.

9/20 Update:

I just got off the phone with Ricky - He is still in the same hospital room and will be for at least several more weeks. The good news is that the hip is not getting worse. The bad news is the shattered pieces still haven't healed to the point that they can make future decisions regarding additional surgeries, etc.

He says the cards, notes, and phone calls absolutely mean the world to him. He is amazingly optimistic! Hunter Kemper called him a few days ago and Ricky was lifted beyond description. It seems that we are hearing a lot of bad news lately - please know that the triathlon community has made a HUGE impact on Ricky. THANK YOU!

9/27 Update:

Ricky is sounding great and optimistic! His hip finally is getting a good prognosis on the healing, it is just going "glacierly slow." He was pretty funny describing how a blind guy navigates a hospital with a walker and not being able to use his cane. He is still in the same hospital room and has not yet been given a "parole date." Hopefully my next update will have a release date in sight.

Cards, notes, gift packages, and phone calls continue to trickle in. He says he is not sure he could have made it through the past 6 weeks without the encouragement and support he has received. THANK YOU!

10/18 Update:

Good News! Ricky is being released from the hospital this morning after a 10 week saga! He is still continuing to heal and is in ongoing pain. However, he has set a goal of running the NYC Marathon in 2013!!

You may be interested to know that he has received notes, cards, care packages, etc from more than a dozen countries, and many, many states. He received personal phone calls from many athletes including Hunter Kemper and Dirk Bockel. Chrissie Wellington sent a card. WTC sent a care package of IM swag. Ricky has been blown away by amazing encouragement and support support he has received from the triathlon/ST community! In fact, he says he couldn't have made it without you all. So, many, many thanks to all!

Ricky couldn't not have endured the saga without you. You have responded to perhaps the highest calling - making a positive difference in the life of another.

Thank you!
