Anyone watching this? I am watching the preview fights on FX and keep going back and forth on whether to pull the trigger on the PPV.

I'm looking forward to the results. Silva is an absolutely amazing fighter, but I'd really like to see someone take him down. After watching him mow through Leiben and Franklin, he seemed like he was untouchable. Sonnen absolutely man handled him in their last matchup. I personally think he got over confident and instead of playing conservative in the last round to win, he tried too much and got caught.
I'm not expecting as much this time around. As they say, the loser has the advantage because he knows what he needs to work on. Silva is too good of a fighter not to have prepared a better defense to Sonnen's take downs.
Feel free to post a spoiler when its over.

Sonnen took down Silva in 6 seconds in the first. Stayed on top of Silva the entire round.
Un-fucking-real.
In the second, Sonnen took a REALLY stupid back-hand spin, which missed, and Sonnen fell to the ground. Silva kneed Sonnen on the ground, jumped on him, and started punching. Ref called it at 1:55 in round 2. Silva by TKO.

First UFC PPV I've bought in quite a while....kind of a soft spot in my heart for Tito & that + Cung Le + Silva = win.
Thoughts:
Cung Le at 40, and somewhat fat, was a fun fight to watch. Cote, who could have been a World Champ if he had actually ever trained 10 years ago when the pickins were ripe, was game but had serious rust issues.
Tito: I wanted him to win, so my views are biased, but knock opponent on his ass 2x, take him down 3-4x, but lose? Since when did MMA become about compu-box #s? This was a bit of a stain on the sport---Dana White chasing down FG to convince him to come back to the ring (and Forrest KNEW he lost that fight---hence the usual loss meltdown)---showed me that this was "somewhat" fixed. That being said, Tito (and Forrest) were perfect for MMA 10-12 years ago, but they are hopelessly outclassed now. Its been obvious for 5-6 years that to stop Tito all you had to do was hit him in the face 2-3x and he would stop coming at you. Forrest? I dunno--hardest head in the biz, but he has never beaten a top contender at their prime (sorry, modern contender).
Silva/Sonnen: I had 3-4 friends over & I said this pre-fight: "it could be over in 1 minute or 25---how "good" the fight is will depend on how long it lasts". Seriously, I thought if AS had 30 secs in the middle of the ring he would destroy Sonnen. I've never seen him in this good of shape--the usual softness was gone. Once AS had distance in the middle of the ring he hit CS 5-6x & it was downhill from there. The missed 360 spinning reverse hammer was just the coup de grace. I watched the 2nd round 3-4x and I'm telling you CS was wobbly before missing & falling down. Two of AS punches were so fast i could barely see them on slow motion review. Maybe now Sonnen will quit running his mouth for once.
I'd love to see GSP vs Silva at an in-between weight. I don't disagree that AS is the best fighter ever in MMA......but GSP is pretty damned close. Except for two small miscues, both brutally avenged, his record would be close to that of AS.
If GSP won't fight AS, and I were AS, I would simply fight for the title in the weight classes below + light heavyweight above. I have zero doubt that he could hold 3-4 titles at the same time. Zuffa would never allow it though.

I could be totally off here, but, it looked to me like Sonnen hit his head on the octagon when he missed the spinning punch. It looked like he tagged it right on the temple and was stunned. I watched it 3-4 times to get a better look. He looked dazed and barely covered up when Silva brought down the knee. I did not think the knee was a bad as the announcers were saying. Actually I was quite shocked when Sonnen seemed to just go limp and Silva started pounding him.
I enjoyed the Tito v Forrest fight. I hear what you are saying, but, you cannot land that many significant hits and not win on points. I had it 2 rounds to 1 for Forrest. Tito did not fight a smart fight.

Should have given Sonnen a chance to get Silva's legs or get knocked out. He was defending himself decently and was totally fine when he got up.

Killed me to miss this fight. Silva is by far my favorite fighter. He was toying too much with his opponents for a little while but his last few fights have been clinics on MMA. I have only been able to find highlights online so far. I was wondering why Sonnen would botch that back fist so badly. He likely would have missed anyway, with the way Silva was so slick with the bob/ weave/ slide.
As far as the knee to the chest being so devastating, he likely lost a bit of wind hitting the mat, then was doubled over, so he never got full capacity back. A knee to the chest/ solar would be icing on the cake there. Just from what I have seen, the fight was over the minute he took that back fist, even if he didn't completely bust his ass. Silva was in perfect position for unleashing destruction.

Watch the replay. Sonnen was done. He was turtled up and doing nothing to defend himself toward the end of the barrage. He was not totally fine. He was a bit dazed and on the ground for a bit before getting up. He wasn't getting out of that and he knew it. Trust me... Sonnen would be the most vocal about things if it was an early stoppage. He got his ass beat and he knew it.

He didn't hit his head. This angle is better than the telecast angle in that regard:
The knee was brutal:
...and done:
I agree with you. I thought Forrest easily won 2 rounds to 1.

I think you are giving Silva far too little credit. I don't know how he does it, but that guy just seems to know what his opponent is about to do. Watching the replay, it was almost like him and Sonnen scripted it the way he timed his duck. Unreal. I am actually not a huge fan of Silva but have to respect what he can do.
Overall, not a great card. Glad I only paid a ten dollar cover.

I watched it again on YouTube. The ref made the right call. On first viewing it looked like he could have made a move to the legs, but I think that knee to the chest took too much out of him.
The spinning backfist attempt was really stupid. Especially against AS. What was he thinking? First round he takes it to the ground and it was working well. Second round he should kept trying to get it on the ground. Instead he goes flashy and SLIPS to the ground. Game over. Really dumb.

As I was watching live, when Sonnen went to the ground, I really expected him to "spin" away from Silva and get back to his feet. I was stunned to see him sit there and take the knee. Yeah, I know, he covered his head. It isn't like he just sat there and did nothing. But, it was just odd looking.

Granted I've not seen the fight, so I don't really know what lead up to the back fist, but I know that often times fighters will ditch their best strategies because somehow their ego gets the best of them and makes them think they can beat their opponent at their own game.
Currently their is no one in the world that can beat Silva at his game. No one has even come close. In the last match up Sonnen exposed a weakness, which was Silva's weak take down defense. Honestly, if we could get a GSP-Silva fight, that's what GSP would have to do to win.
As some one who is built like a worn out washed up version of Silva, I can tell you that Silva is built for outside striking, but not at all built for defending the takedown. He's got very long legs and is a bit top heavy. In the last fight Sonnen pretty mush landed every two leg wrestling takedown at the beginning of the round. To do anything different against Silva is just asking for an ass kicking.

On the flip side, if you expect the same strategy to work against Silva two fights in a row, you've got another thing coming. While Sonnen did take Silva down on the forst round again, he failed to inflict damage like he did the first fight. It was like Carwin/ Lesnar all over again. Sonnen got fairly winded thinking he had the advantage in round 1 while Silva wasn't hurt a lick. A winded, over confident Sonnen thought he could finish the fight. The Spider had other ideas.

Silva's takedown defense in round 2 was excellent. That's something that has been lacking in Silva's game forever. I don't think he really cared about it on the past because he is so good on his back. That all changed with the first Sonnen fight in which he got whipped on the ground for 4.5 rounds. You could tell he improved immensely in that regard. Yes, he was taken down quickly in the first round but Sonnen couldn't get Silva down in round 2 and that was a recipe for disaster for Sonnen. It leads to doing stupid things like thinking you can strike with Silva and attempting spinning backfists. Silva dodged Sonnen's spinning backfist like he was Neo in The Matrix.
It was kind of reminiscent of Silva vs Dan Henderson. Henderson took Silva down easily in the first round and ground humped him for the whole round. Henderson got overconfident and decided to strike with Silva in round 2 and got crushed... and Henderson is a pretty decent striker (way better than Sonnen but nowhere in Silva's universe). That's one of Silva's greatest strengths - luring other fighters into a striking match. The worst fights of Silva's career are the fights in which the other fighter didn't take the bait (Maia, Lietes, Cote). He easily won those but the fights were boring as hell.

Sonnen set up the backfist with a weak jab to the spot where the backfist was going. Not only did he telegraph the backfist, his jab initiated Silva's duck. Silva ducked and like saw Sonnen's feet spinning so he just stayed down. Any good fighter would have dodged that shot (not taking away from Silva's abilities). The way I see it Sonnen lost with a dumb decision that was poorly executed.

I've watched R2 5-6x, and I'm telling you that Sonnen was in trouble before the spinning backfist attempt. AS hits him in the face 2-3x so hard & so fast in the 10-20 seconds before the attempted spinning fist that he was already rocked. If you have it dvr'd, hit pause once they are toe-to-toe in the center of the ring & then FF thru individual frames. You can barely see the hits, AS is so fast.

Good catch, mop. I see the shots you're talking about. That helps explain the backfist attempt. Brain malfunction from the blows or maybe just desperation. Also there's the part where Sonnen is attempting a take down while silva is against the cage. Not really the best area for take downs.
In their first fight silva got Sonnen into a triangle after getting hammered throughout the whole fight (IIRC). Seems to me silva is able to hold himself together mentally and Sonnen is not.

I had a feeling this was going to happen. Sonnen got too close to beating Silva the first time and Silva wasn't going to let that happen again. I was in it to see that prick Tito get beat in his last fight. Then Griffin stole Tito's going away speech by performing Joe Rogan's interview for him. That...was priceless. Crappy card and that was why I invited myself to the neighbors to watch it! - Nobody can beat Silva! Now what do we do with that weigh class?

Yeah, I agree with you. At very first glance, I sure thought it was an illegal hit. But, the from the very first replay, it was evident that the knee was to the chest and not the head/face. It seems pretty clear it was legal.

I don't know the rules to the nth degree, and it MIGHT be that NO part of the leg can come in contact with a downed opponent's head, but their contention that the "upper" part of Silva's thigh hit Sonnens face so hard that it caused 8 stitches to his tongue is ludicrous. Silva is 6'2++, with LONG femurs. Unless Sonnens chest is hollow, the forward force was pretty much dissipated by the time his upper thigh might have grazed his face.
I'd be much more interested in how many of Sonnen's ribs are cracked/broken. If you watch the replays, Chael's tongue stitches come from getting nailed in the face 4-5x in the proceeding minute.

The other, of course, involves orcs.” John Rogers

He bit his tongue because he was too stupid to keep his mouth shut while getting kneed in the chest. I love how they say Silva can't beat Sonnen without cheating. Coming from the camp who's fighter was juiced up in the last fight.

Looks like Sonnen's camp is appealing Silva's win: they're saying the knee was illegal. Yet another rematch, here we come.

What complete horseshit. That knee came nowhere near his head/face. Just look at the images I posted earlier. This has been dissected like the Zapruder film over at Sherdog.com already.

Now it's being reported that Sonnen won't appeal after all:

Sonnen set up the backfist with a weak jab to the spot where the backfist was going. Not only did he telegraph the backfist, his jab initiated Silva's duck. Silva ducked and like saw Sonnen's feet spinning so he just stayed down. Any good fighter would have dodged that shot (not taking away from Silva's abilities). The way I see it Sonnen lost with a dumb decision that was poorly executed.
Sonnen was already in la-la land due to the sick anchor punch that Silva caught him with a few seconds before. That was the real end of the fight for Chael - it's a testament to the guy's chin that he was even standing after that punch connected - he did better than Forrest did.

There's an interview on UFC.COM with Sonnen in the back room with his family after the fight. His dad (I think) was talking about the spinning backfist and Sonnen didn't remember it at all.

That makes sense. The more I think about it, how bad woul dhis balance have to have been to fall the way he did after missing. If what you guys say is correct, he was probably already in lala land when he attempted it.
