Have no fear, we locked up the location for the after party today... Same place as last year, Bo's Bar on University... Details to come soon, but help us by spreading the word!
For those of us who a) have no shot at winning and b) don't care, the after party is all we got...
I'm sure hoping ASU brings the two painted up guys who rode the tandem bike last year... They stole the show...
See ya'll in a week

I'll ask Dan and Mike if they're going. I think they both graduated but asking never hurts. You're right they were the team spirit champions. This is something I'm still sore about considering CSU had it 5 years in a row...

Dan and Patrick probably won't be there. Dan moved away from Phoenix and Patrick is probably not going to the race. Shame though, they were definitely the best part of last year's race.

Mike,
How does the 12 male and female athletes you have starting work? Are they possibly all scored or are 5 just there in the "open division"? It seems like a significant advantage when compared to teams like westpoint and arizona whom have 7. If one of their guys/girls have a bad day game over really. But if all 12 of yours have the possibility to score one bad day really doesn't matter much.
Just confused after reading the USAT website regarding this matter.

There were extra slots awarded to the MCTC. We are still only scoring top 4, which is the same as everyone else.

Stupid young kids...don't you know real triathlon doesn't start until the 35-39 AG? Before that anybody can win if you just show up and have a pulse. It pains me to see 20 year olds gloating about winning their AG with a 2:13 Oly.
I hope this was supposed to be in pink font.

I bet that's what CollegIate Nationals is like too
Oh wait, you admit you don't have any idea what goes on at collegiate Nationals?
Allow me to enlighten you. Collegiate nationals is the most competitive of the USAT nationals events available to amateurs (I'm excluding the elite nationals in several disciplines because that's obviously not an amateur contest). I'm serious. Collegiate nationals is fast as hell. If you haven't been, you should look at the results. Tuscaloosa is not an easy course, yet times are consistently fast there. Collegiate Nationals doesn't have "Age Groups," and the athletes at the top don't give a shit about winning an age group. I am ~top 5-10% there, I'm 21 years old, and I haven't given a shit about winning an age group since I was 15. The top 10%, maybe even top 15% regularly contend for the overall win at most local triathlons, and the guys at the tippy top are professional-caliber athletes. I don't know how much (or where) you've raced that you've acquired an opinion that the under-34 age groups are soft or sparse, but you are very, very, very, very mistaken. It is a fast fucking race. Since older people so often get to make blanket statements about younger people, I'm going to allow myself to do the same: "You people" need to learn how to use google, or athlinks, or the USAT results page, and familiarize yourself with the results/history of a race before making grossly ignorant statements such as you have just done. I don't really mean it though--this is just directed at you.

That is close to being one of the most misguided things I've ever read on here. Just to illustrate, 6 of the top-10 at Age Group Nationals last year were college-age (<24 for the sake of the argument), and the entire podium was comprised of the same. Bragging about winning an age group is stupid anyway. In many cases, those people who are given the age group awards would not have won them had the people who received overall awards were not removed from the age-category results...Especially silly is bragging about winning your age group at age group sprint nationals--all of the fast people raced the oly distance race!! If you are an AG national champion in the sprint and your time x2 > the AG national champion in the Oly then you haven't won anything at all IMO.
I'm sure it must be really hard to find time to train between your naps and YouTube videos and maybe the occasional class. Man, "you young kids" don't realize how much time you have and how easy it really should be to be fast at your age. Talk to me when you're a real working adult.

Quit making excuses. I'm fast now, and I'll be fast next year after I have a real job. Why? I'm used to fitting in training in between all the work I've had to do to graduate Aerospace Engineering in 4 years while working and coaching...it will be easier with a real-world job, not harder. If you want to cling to your precious age group because you think life is tough and the playing field isn't level, that is fine by me. Just don't be surprised when you see me looking down from the overall podium not giving a shit...
We all race the same race, nobody cares how you got there. Pros seem to understand this mentality, but hardly any age groupers do..

You know, if he's making a sweeping generalization of ALL college students using the ENTIRE collegiate population as context then he's probably right.

x2 except aerospace engineering would make me most likely cry just thinking about it
.
While technically I don't have a separate job, there are those who consider my school to be a job in and of itself because there are specific things I have to do that are not schoolwork or even the operations of my tri team. I once heard it referred to as "a $290,000 federal work-study program" rather than "free."
If this guy wants to think us collegiates have all kinds of free-flexible time, I'm thinking he probably didn't do anything remotely athletic in college and is bitter about it. It's either that, or he's been doing this for quite a while, has invested lots of time and money, and is bitter about people our age passing him on steel road bikes with clip-ons and toe cages in their first triathlon, even though that never happens according to him.

More or less... The problem is that the "young kids" taking naps and watching YouTube all day are rarely motivated to do anything like tri's, and most of us doing triathlon are motivated type-A's who have a bunch of other stuff going on.
Every day I wish I had more time to spend just training. But I'm not about to give up either of my engineering degrees, or the Navy ROTC program, or my social life, or sleep...

Yes, any of the 12 have the possibility to score in the top 4. Places 5-7 won't score but will displace other team's scoring athletes (just like what would happen with a "normal" team of 7). The advantage to having 12 starters instead of 7 is more chances to place high with the "extras" if some of the higher seeded athletes have bad days.

If that holds, the bike splits are going to be somewhat slower from the wind, but the course, minus the bridge, looks to be fairly well protected. Run splits should be faster as the heat will be less of an issue with full cloud cover/rain. Wet/wind could also lead to a bit more danger on the bike, especially for those that are trying to move up through the field.

Bitter for the good old days? Say what you will about the undergrads, the grad students who typically win this race work their asses off, and we don't get "real job" weekends.
