1984, Seattle SEAFAIR Triathlon. I was in the second to last wave. Put bike shorts over my speedo in T1, then did a full change in T2. The changing tent flaps had been ripped off, so I just said "oh well" and dropped trou.

I had no idea what a triathlon entailed. I thought if I put my feet down on the road during the bike and got caught, I'd be DQed.

Wausau Wisconsin, 1982. Sorta Oly dist. with approx 1 mile swim, I think 40 miles on the bike and a 10K run. Tried to drive home alone afterwards about 1.75 hours and had to stop at a friend's cottage to sleep after 30 minutes of driving.

1995 West Kennebunk (Maine) Triathlon -
Bought a speedo the night before the race. Had never open water swam, the water was 61 degrees, ocean swim. I did most of it on my back!!
20 Mile ride on a Univega Road bike with downtube shifters.
10K Run was great (I was an XC runner at the time, and running fast).
I finished mid pack, but I was 15 and cocky as could be. I thought I was pretty tough for doing it.
Great memories.

1989, an AFL football club triathlon. I can't even remember the distances - something like 300/14/4. I think I came 3rd or 4th - mainly because most of them couldn't swim very well :)

1986 Milton Ontario. 16 years old. 1km, 40ish km, 10km. Swam in a speedo, pulled bike shorts over top with a tshirt in T2. Steel road bike, 10 speed, no aero anything. Tennis shoes and toe clips, then changed into runners and running shorts. Didn't bring a water bottle or any food. Not sure why I kept changing outfits.
Finished in the top 30 OA. The next year I was faster and finished only top 100 OA. The sport really exploded in my area about then.

haha, I think I won your first race, the 88 Mountain Lakes Tri.
My first race was the Calloway Gardens Triathlon in August 1984, a 2km swim, 40km bike and 15km run. I had learned to swim that June and just figured out how to bilateral breath the day before the race swimming at the race venue. Think I finished 15th overall. Second race was the Sandman Triathlon in Gulf Shores AL a couple of weeks later and won that overall, the first of 12 times winning that event.

1990. A 'Kids of Steel' event in Toronto as a 17 year old. My high school best friend was on the Nat'l junior development team and got me interested in Tris. Did a few other events but a year later I was a undergrad and into the whole 'grunge' thing - i.e. Nirvana, chain smoking, etc. It wasn't until until 2006 that I got back to doing another Tri. Haven't looked back since.

1983 Bud Light Clearwater Beach Sprint series, one was a du, one was a tri.
Du: Swim, run (on the beach), swim. I
might
have completed the first swim, jumped out of the water and run and possibly puked on my girlfriend's feet. She still went to the prom with me, tho.
Tri: Knew better...didn't swallow the saltwater, and finished in top 10. Girlfriend was pumped. I was just glad I didn't hurl.

2005 Camp Hansen Triathlon while in Okinawa Japan in the Marines. It was a reverse triathlon...run, bike, swim. Went out too fast on the run. Rode a bike that I ordered from Cali, and put together (incorrectly) the night before the race. I swam the 300m swim with a side stroke. I thought I was in shape until I did this race!

Not too remarkable except I remember thinking afterward why didn't I do one of these things back in the early 90s when I was cycling ~ 200 mpw in between cross-country workouts.

Las Vegas 2001 or 2002. If it was 2001 it was fall, if it was 2002, it was spring. A hot guy at the pool suggested I do the race. I
immediately
signed up for the Olympic distance (thinking it wouldn't be that hard-I never even considered the Sprint option...which would have been much better). After borrowing a bike that was way too big for me and walking a good portion of the run, I swore I'd never do another. Then I moved to Hawaii and all my friends were doing them. I'd love to find the results of that race.

But, my first multisport race was the Mayday Biathlon in 86 I think...I led the 5k run in the low 15s and the 30k bike took me for f@cking ever...I think I got passed by granny on her tricycle headed to the market.

1987, Waukesha South HS sprint tri, only open to high schoolers. Went in as biker for a coed relay team from RiversideHS in Milwaukee and we won it...which, given the state of Milwaukee public schools athletics vs the burbs and private schools was something of a miracle. Went back the next year as a senior for my first solo shot and came off the bike in 3rd after riding a flat front for the last 2mi...faded badly on the run due to zero experience/training running off the bike and finished 7th.

Yep, just rock the speedo from start to finish. Throw on a helmet at T1 and a Bud Light visor at T2 and you are good to go. Maybe I'll go retro this summer.

Then I crashed on the bike (someone came on the "back" part of a curve in an "out and back" course). I got passed at that point and then re-passed to be 1st into T2 and then gained a couple minutes on 2nd in the run.

Finished in the top 30 OA. The next year I was faster and finished only top 100 OA. The sport really exploded in my area about then.
I did that one too! Boy those were the days, I remember I wore my hockey helmet because I wasn't sure if I'd ever do another one.
No one cared, rules just said you needed a helmet. Rode my Dad's 10 speed, no clue what I was doing, no spare anything!
I remember swimming beside a guy that was wearing Ray Ban Aviator sunglasses, the ones that held on over the ears!
I almost drowned laughing! Good times!

Non standard distances, ending with a five mile run. It had one water stop at the turn around with those 4oz. dixie cups. About a mile from the finish there was a drinking fountain, I wanted to stop there sooo bad. I push through to the finish and immediately ask the RD where the water is and he says, "We don't have any here, but about a mile back up the run course......"

Cane Creek Park Sprint Tri near Waxhaw (just outside Charlotte, NC) in July 1991.
A couple of triathletes who occasionally joined our lunch run group at work talked me into it in June. I borrowed a bike from one them and spent a month going to the pool a couple of times a week with the other until I was able to survive a 1/2 mile of continuous swimming.
Three wave on-the-beach start = my first taste of open water MMA. Very unprepared for that. Survived the swim. Casually cruised the bike. Passed tons of people on the run. I was hooked! :)

The where and when is less fun than the "How".
I hadn't trained AT ALL, but I knew the swimming was my best so I used the impossible-to-fail strategy of "be so far ahead after the swim that no one can catch me!"
By the time I started the run I was cramping from my knees to my nipples and trying my hardest to not throw up while I walked.
And this was for a sprint tri. Hahahaha.

Also a Lake Dunmore Vt (Vermont Sun Series) newbie back in 1995. Borrowed a friends wetsuit the night before and the style of wetsuit was more for surfing (ski bib style)......and was not conducive for swimming as neckline was loose and would fill with water and create monster drag. Of course, I found that out during the race because I was a big dummy....as opposed to testing it out ten minutes prior to the start. Good times!

Yeah the next year I still didn't know what I was doing (my second triathlon) so I swam in a surfing wetsuit which of course just retained water and slowed me down. On the bike the bearings in one of my pedals seized (because I was riding a poorly maintained ten speed) and I could only pedal forward about ten rotations at a time before I had to back pedal to rethread the pedal so it would not fall out. Made for a long day on the bike.

1984 Bud Light Indy Triathlon. Distances were about 1k/30k/8k. 15 y.o. 1st OA out of water. Got passed by about 20 people in transition as I tied my leather soled Vittoria lace-up cycling shoes. Somehow the lead group got sent off course by quite a bit, and the rest of the field went a different (right?) way. 3rd or 4th back into 2nd transition (was not part of lead group). Think I finished about 30th after a VERY slow run. I think Brian Boggs won it.

I think I came in 3rd or 4th that year there (but it could have been 86). Horrible course--bad roads & the run was thru the worst industrial sections of town.....with the infamous Terre Haute smell. Ugh. They still put on that race every year---has the smell gotten any better?

“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.” John Rogers

2008 Jarden Westchester Olympic Tri.
In a borrowed wetsuit from a good friend 30lbs lighter than I was. Needless to say, the swim was a challenge.
What a glorious day. What a wonderful sport.

1984 Raleigh Mini Triathlon
Held in Raleigh, NC it consisted of a 1/4 mile swim, 12 mile bike and 3.5 mile run. The bike course went straight through part of the city and NC State campus. It was marshlled by only volunteers no police and 1984 that was not a problem. Hardly saw a car. The race site now is townhome community. My best memory of the race was finishing the run and being greeted by a cocktail waitress in heels offering me a Bloody Mary.

70.3 Boise. June 2008.
Decided to change into regular bike bibs in T1. Had smeared the chamois with chamois creme before so that I would be assured of a comfortable, chafe free ride. Ran up the ramp with wet feet and got them covered in sand and grit. Wobbled as I tried to put the bibs on and stepped right into the center of the chamois. Looked in horror at the massive amount of sand now stuck in the chamois creme. Shrugged, said "screw it" and put them on anyway. Proceeded to wet sand my taint for 56 miles. Have never chafed to horribly in all my life.
Will never attempt to change shorts in T1 again. Lesson learned.
