Water's flat.

Bike's flat.

Run's flat.

As far as the terrain, if you are in the M30-34, it's all so flat you shouldn't even worry about training :).

Even with my training, I still think you're safe. I have a total of 1 Xterra under my belt and I'd hardly consider myself in contention for a top 10-15 spot in our AG. I do think it will be awesome just to be a part of an event like this. Definitely an honor to me.

I also only have done one xterra. Unless the field explodes I don't think you'll have trouble making top 15, since there were only 9 total last year (including one DNF).

Starting to think about travel logistics. With a (fairly) inexpensive host hotel and a relatively short distance from the airport, flying is much more appealing than making a 20 hour drive. The question is, how do I get my bike there? Any case that will fit a mtb will be over the size requirements of the airlines (looking at SW specifically).

You could ship it to the Cahaba Cycles in Pelham. It is very close to the host hotel.

From Southwest's website:
http://www.southwest.com/..._pol_tab_list_tab_12

Any of the items listed below may be checked in substitution of one piece of the free Checked Baggage allowance for each Passenger at no charge on a one-item-for-one-bag basis. If the item of sporting equipment exceeds 50 pounds in weight or 62 inches in size (outside length plus height plus width), excess weight and size charges may apply.
Bicycles (defined as nonmotorized and having a single seat), including Bike Friday and Co-Pilot, properly packed in a hard-sided bicycle box that fall within the dimensions and weight limits established for normal Checked Baggage, (i.e., 62 inches or less in overall dimensions and less than 50 pounds in weight). Pedals and handlebars must be removed and packaged in protective materials so as not to be damaged by or cause damage to other Baggage. Bicycles packaged in cardboard or soft-sided cases will be transported as conditionally accepted items.

No mtb in a hard case will even come close to that 62" limit (and is unlikely to come in sub-50lb), nor their higher limit for anything not shipped as cargo (84" IIRC).

Any ideas what it costs to ship a bike fedex or ups?

Oh...well crap. Sorry.

I have about a 4 hr drive or I'd tell you to ship it to my work via fedex (only like$19 shipping). Wish I could help.

Good to hear.

Is a rental car going to be a necessity for anyone flying in to this race or are there shuttles from the airport?

Re: ITU Cross Worlds - Who's Going [beanmj] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

You will need a rental car in Birmingham. The park is about a 25 minute drive depending on traffic. Once you are at Oak Mountain there are plenty of places to eat, drink, etc., in the area of the park, all within a radius of 2 miles from the park entrance. Having a car to get around the area is much more easier. You can bike it, but late May here can mean lots-o-rain, and truly unpredictable weather patterns. Do not want to ride around the area on a bike in the rain with the traffic....just my 2 cents.

Re: ITU Cross Worlds - Who's Going [tricasey] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

I should probably look more at maps but I assume that the "host hotel" is pretty close to the start of the race. If there's a shuttle available from the airport to the hotel (and back), it seems that it should be reasonable to get by without a car. Is this not the case?

Re: ITU Cross Worlds - Who's Going [beanmj] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

Yeah, you could check with the hotel about shuttles, and if not you would have to grab a cab, or share a ride with another athlete. The cost of a cab might cancel out the cost of a rental for 2 days, but I bet it would be pretty expensive for a cab. It cost me $40 from the airport to my house and the park is another 15 miles from my house. Once you get to the Oak Mountain exit and the host hotel, riding your bike to the park is pretty simple and easy. The only worries is traffic, and we have some crappy roads for cycling, or I should say crappy drivers, and weather. But I ride to the park on occasion from my house, it's not too bad. Once inside the park, you're all golden....bike lanes, and fricking awesome trails. You might want to stay a extra day just to ride the other trails in the park.

A buddy finally got through today and trisports told him they are not equipped to print non-trisports sponsor logos. Huh? If You can get one logo and a name on there you can get any logo on there.

On this note, can anybody speak to the quality of the competitor suit vs. the carbon? Is it really worth the extra $150? I'm leaning towards the competitor actually because for Xterra I'd really like to have a pocket anyway, but if the difference in the suits is huge, may as well splurge and just tuck Gus along edge of suit by the shoulder

So if your looking at HI, I would lean towards the Carbon...I'm pretty sure that is a faster swim suit and HI will be sans wetsuit. Yes, the zip in the back and no pockets, but thats what makes it fast in the water.

If anyone wasn't already aware, suits must be ITU compliant which requires zip in back. Mainly why options are limited for team kits. If you wanted competitor and they don't have your side, Trisports is offering a discount on carbon. Contact them through live chat, instead of phone.

Re: ITU Cross Worlds - Who's Going [jhightower] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

Couple things here. I have flown Southwest more times than I count with my Tri All 3 hard case and 29er, and have always been charged $50 each way. So far they have never brought up the weight or size. Last flight with them was November 2011. Using them for this trip to Birmingham. They go to Atlanta now too think cause of purchase of Airtran? Easy drive from there to Birmingham.

If determined you could go carless, but better stay on the main drag in Pelham which is about 2 or 3 miles from park entrance, then more miles to venue, but doable. Compare costs like others said with short term rental.

Probably too late with this, but I ordered the carbon version but separate top and shorts not trisuit. Trisports told me that top has two small pockets. Hard to figure since I could not actually see the differences but just figure the competitor level may never get worn again, hopefully the carbon will. Over it but would have thought USAT could have gotten some price reduction over the norm for these. Ordered mine 4/19, on the ups truck for delivery tomorrow. Requested no name or logos which sped it up I think.

Looking forward to this one....but have no clue who or what countries will be represented.

I'm wondering the same - will age groupers travel from Europe for it? I hope they do but I'm envisioning a sea of USA, a couple from our continental neighbors, and not much more.

Ordered the carbon (with name, no logo) on the 17th, nothing about shipping yet.

Just wanted to put a bug in your ear about printing your uniform. I had mine done through WinSkin Printing (http://www.winskinsprinting.com/). He takes care of a majority of the ITU pro's and got my uniform turned around fairly quickly.

I didn't trust TriSports to do it right or on time.

Seems you were right to not trust TriSports to do it right. I took my suit out of the box and the letters for my name are already peeling (they're stickers, not screen printed).

And aren't the suits supposed to come with the lanyard to make the zipper operable by the person wearing it?

2min PR in mile swim (please don't tell Kenny was short, even if it was...I've swam too many fast 100's and 200's over the last few months to be told it was short)

All downhill from there...no pun intended. Flying down a hill just shy of the 6 mile mark and next thing I know I'm seeing the tops of trees going in circles. Clipped my right grip on a tree and took a short flight. Unfortunately my front wheel didn't survive. Thirty minutes of trying to get it straight enough to ride and no luck. DNF.

Great competition and even better atmosphere. Good luck to those going to Virginia. Ill see those going to Tsali and Clemson.

Really enjoy racing on that course. Wished they would have started the pro race closer to the AG race. Too many obligations to hang out all day and watch. Only thing that could have made the venue better was food at the finish. I would have been more than happy to pay for some good local BBQ post race.

Also, seemed to be a ton of flat tires out there. Anyone else notice that? While finishing my first run lap, saw a guy ripping down the road on rim only. loved it.

Turn out of talent was also very impressive. seemed to be a whos who of the xterra world.

Here's mine, 3rd 20-24. Flatted early on in the bike which probably cost me 2nd if not 1st AG, as well as quite a few overall spots. Happy to know I would have at least been able to hang swimming with the U23s, even if they aren't roadies. http://iankingtri.blogspot.com/...on-worldsxterra.html

I had enough to occupy myself standing around watching first the ladies' pro race, then the men's shortly thereafter, but I agree, it was definitely a long race. There was the one BBQ place set up that was okay. It wasn't anything spectacular or earth-shattering Alabaman goodness, though.

x2 on the course. Not insanely technical, but not a snoozer slow version of a road triathlon either. A fast course for sure, but not without its challenges (like jumping off the side of Blood Rock)

Had a great race except for the bike. Thursday and Friday I was ripping around the course having a blast, Saturday I had three legit high-speed wrecks, one of them clipping a tree with my bars. Lost my garmin somewhere on the bike course, somehow it came out of the mount. Swim was good but unremarkable, ran down a couple dozen people (but only a few in AG) for a 10k PR, 11th in 30-34 with a 2:32.

This was my first race after aging up to 30-34, I've got some work to do if I want to be competitive again.

For you to go down three times on the bike, you still had a pretty great race!!!

I have a few questions that are sort of related to the OP for you guys b/c obviously you are well beyond my current level (assuming you don't mind sharing. you can always pm me if you'd rather not share with the entire group).
1. How much do you actually get to ride on the trail during a week's training or are you mostly on a trainer or road rig?
2. How the heck are you able to continue to power (pedal) while riding over pretty rough stuff like roots, rocks, etc.? I felt like I rode really smooth for the entire course, didn't really get passed on the climb...actually did a decent amount of passing on the climb, but man I got killed on the sections that were semi-rough where I was rolling over obstacles and people were passing me and just laying down the power OVER the obstacles!!! It's not that I didn't have the power to put down but I felt like it was so rough that i couldn't actually pedal in certain sections....That probably makes no sense but just didn't know if there was that big of a difference in bikes (currently riding a FS 26") or what it was...

Went solo to the race, but hooked up with ST'r Josh, from the Wooo! Had preconceived notions of AL and was pleasantly surprised by the locale and the people.
Came out of the water in my AG about 10th and I think I was top 9 in the run, but you can't give up 5-10 min on the bike. I need to get my mountain bike chops back. Passed many 50+ on the run who crushed it on the bike, so there is hope! I was a little blue after the race, but goals must be realistic and achievable...mine were neither. Feeling better now...another mid pack WC finish, an early race to spank myself into shape, opening another race format that I have not done in awhile and turned the ether of Slowtwitch into real life camaraderie. Josh was just 20 seconds in front of me, so he has bragging rights until our next throw down.

I was really hoping for a 6th place finish, oh well. Can't be too disappointed with where I finished given the level of competition, though that's probably going to be the norm for the next 5 years since most of my competitors are going to be from Boulder. The most important thing is I'm uninjured, though it turned in to an expensive weekend.

I was also on a FS26 bike, low tire pressure is your friend (I was probably a few PSI high), propedal is essential (I've got a VPP rear, which bogs down when trying to pedal through rocky/rooty terrain but is beautiful on the downs), and you've just got to get used to standing and powering through rough trail.

I only get out to trails about once a week, most of my bike time is commuting which shows. My biking is an obvious weak spot that I'll be working on as much as I can.

Re: ITU Cross Worlds - Who's Going [jhightower] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

the short answer is i missed a podium on the swim.

Got CLOBBERED about 150m, elbow to right behind ear. saw the little yellow flashes for about 30sec and then I was a little passive from then to the swim exit. My normal 1500m non-wetty swim is ~24:30 to 25 flat, I was 27:20 or so.

Rode as best i could without being a complete ass to the 70+ folks I passed for a 1:12 or 1:13 I think? Crazy how that 2min of swim time would have likely also yielded 1min of faster bike split (i sat behind MANY people for 10-40sec at a time).

Ran sort of on auto-pilot as I knew the race was lost. high 40:XX I think?

13th overall, 5th in 40-44. Maybe 2:19 something?

The only real silver lining is that my athlete Craig Evans had a stellar race for 2nd Elite Male.

Wish i could give you some major pointers on how to ride over the ruff stuff, but i really dont have the chops on the bike right now (1:17 on Sat). I have found that nothing beats time on the trails and learning what tire pressures work best for you. I came from a roadie background, so i use to have big engine with little skill. The skills have improved, but still a ways to go.

I did find an immediate improvement when i switched from my 26 to a 29er. I can just ride over things with speed that i tried to avoid on the 26.

The race went ok for me. 23 and change in the water, 1:17 on the bike and 40:xx on the run for 12th overall and 4th in the age group (30-34). With my current fitness level, i cannot complain. But was pretty evident that a lot of work needs to be done to compete with the top guys. Getting your ass handed to you by 8 min by age group winner was an eye opener.

huge props to Craig as well. been racing/training with him for years. amazing that he was a 215ish lbd out of shape swimmer 6-7 yrs ago and now barely got beat by Conrad. could not be happier for him.

The New Specialized Wind Tunnel
Will this be a game changer for Specialized, in both sales and product design, or will it not move the sales and design needle versus those in Specialized's competitive set?
Yes, Game Changer
Minor move forward
Won't budge the needle
