A Wendy's Double Cheeseburger with a Frosty is the best post race meal ever. I would trade my bike for it at the end of a race.

Anything that is close to the race. I'm so damn hunger at the end of a race that I'll eat anything before I start biting people's heads off. I'm an angry son of a gun when Im hungry and after a race I'll eat my own arm.

So the answer to that question is MY ARM, not ideal but it will do.

At the end of IMAZ 2010, I would have gladly made that trade. Now that I have a new bike and won't race if I have explosive diarrhhea, it might take a little more.

BK double cheeseburger with fries and a thick, old school strawvberry milkshake.

Gotta be better than the double salty tomato or chicken soup they forced on me a few years back, that made me hurl! Literally. Nowhere to spew was handy so I quickly took the lid off my drink bottle and chundered in the bottle. This was closely followed by the volunteers hearing me ask, in quite a loud voice "Who the FK made this soup so Farking salty?" A volunteer then apologetically said, "some people like it salty after the race"

BK might not be great food, but at least you know what ya gunna get, and the grease is a welcome relief after 6 months of fat free training :-)

Chicken risotto with sundried tomatoes, grape tomatoes, artichoke, and green beans. A nice glass of cold rosé wouldn't hurt.

Yes, I know i just upset a lot of foodies by calling the above "risotto" and drinking rosé, but my personal favorite, risotto alle vongole, just doesn't pack enough protein, and it's kinda hard to drink some Montalcino right after a race.

Back in 1998 I think it was, I was training for IMNZ. I did a 2 hour run in the morning before work, had breakfast and worked. Got back late from a meeting so missed lunch and headed out for a 40 min tempo run on VERY tired legs. Another meeting. Damn!

Got home and dinner wasn't ready so headed out for my planned 2 hour hill ride (out into the country). On the way home, I bonked badly. I had trouble staying on my bike. I ran out of water (stinkin' hot evening) I was eyeing grass on the side of the road thinking. It's really just salad. Not much, but better than nothing. If I eat the stuff furthest from the road, it won't have too much oil and crud on it, and if I eat it more than 2m from the fence, then cows won't have pee'd on it, so it's probably fine. That thought was closely followed by. That puddle looks awfully oily on top, but I could probably brush that aside and drink the clean stuff underneath. Not my best day.

About 3km from home, wobbling my bike along the road, 1/2 hoping to get killed by a passing car, I heard the distinctive rattle of a $1 coin in my spares pouch. I was just passing a corner convenience store (dairy here) and bought one of the oldest, wrinkliest, most dried out meat pies you have ever seen. It had been sitting in the warming oven for at least 7 hours and was probably a bout of food poisoning waiting to happen. I bought it and wolfed it down in seconds. It was the most glorious food I think I have ever eaten. Truly disgusting at any other time, but just then, it was the most life affirming food I could imagine. When I got home, I had a peanut butter and honey sandwich and a large glass of milk and went to bed, still all sweaty and crunchy. Wife was NOT impressed, but let me sleep anyway. I changed the sheets and showered the next morning. That next day was a rest day. Not planned, but had to be!

Whatever burrito join I can find. Qdoba is preferred. Chicken or steak burrito with as much guacamole as I can convince them to put on, a good heap of cheese and some sour cream.

If I had a bad race- I punish myself and 86 the guacamole...

An IV, assuming I truly gave it my all. :)

Contrary to all the other suggestions about burgers, fries, pizza, and fried chicken, my body can't handle that stuff and I just have to pass. The best post-race food I've seen was after the DINO Series trail runs - they partnered up with Qdoba for their post-race food. The burrito bowl bar was really nice, and it gives people options.

Ice cream or shakes on a hot day would be splendid.

Another nice one I did was TriAncilla. It's an interesting venue, being at a Catholic college with all the nuns out there rooting us on (I felt bad when I was swearing at my wetsuit that wouldn't come off, looked up, and saw two nuns looking at me. They probably wore out a couple of their rosary prayer bead things after witnessing that). They also baked cookies, brownies, made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and stuff like that for us, too. It was really a neat touch - like a big pitch-in/pot luck/whatever people call it when they all bring food. I told myself I'm not doing any sprints this year, otherwise, I'd go back there again for the experience.

I switch the fries for something sweet, but the burger and beer is a definite post-IM.

LP brewery in 2007 was the best incarnation of post-IM food.

I ran the marathon in 2010, and made a bee line for the brewery. One of their wraps, a handful of s'mores and a few too many Ubu's and I might have seen god at some point.

I did a small race last summer and they had breakfast. I'm not talking the usual fruit granola and hard bagels. They had eggs cooked fresh, not sitting in a tub for hours, regular pancakes, blueberry pancakes, waffles with fruit and whip cream, sausage bacon ham, fresh OJ. At a restaurant, this would have been a wicked buffet. I may do the race again just for this spread.

I can't eat right after a race but once my stomach calms down & I get away from the finish area I like a few Magner or any other hard cider I can get my hands on. I love the sugar, especially if it is hot. From there I usually go greasy & salty.

After the Pocono 70.3 I had a 12" cheese steak, 12" Chicken Parm, 7" personal pizza, kettle chips & bud light (couldn't find cider on a Sunday). The more I think about my other post race meals the more I realize why I have to work out so hard...

Right after finishing it's baked potatoes with salt and olive oil - and beer. (I bring them with me.)

Or full fat milk and chocolate. Or both.

I also like Coke, and even Coke mixed with beer, as long as it's cold.

After that, I'm with echappist: I want cooked food over fast food. (In a perfect world, it would be this, but it is not a perfect world and it's not easy to find: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feijoada.)

I'm the type who usually calls home to know what's for dinner, and sometimes in the afternoon think about it in anticipation. Same with racing: whenever possible, I try to see where I'll be eating afterwards.

I'll go to some place that serves any combination of meat and potatoes (or rice): steak and mash, blood sausages and mash, calf's liver and potatoes, roasted veal and potatoes, meat stews, chicken or lamb curry, etc. Not that difficult to find. Echappist's chicken risotto sounds great too.

All washed down with beer or red wine.

If I know any of this is coming (and many times I do), it's also a great incentive to get to the finish line as quicky as possible.

After that, it will be whatever smelly, heavy cheese is available and/or chocolate mousse, the thicker the better. If they have gelatin, I'll eat that too.

At this point I'm done - at peace with the world and (unless things went really well or really bad) not much bothered with how I finished in the race.

Nuno

I'm surprised at the number of people who drink beer after a race.

I have nothing against beer, and I drink plenty. But after a race when my body is traumatized and trying to recover isn't when I do it.
