2012 Spring Womens Training Camp

It's that time of year again! After checking with Monty and Dan, our annual pilgrimage to Xantusia is scheduled for April 12-15. Come early, stay late, but come if you can for all or part of a fun weekend of training, eating, and Monty's world-famous margaritas!
As an added incentive for the fishes, there is a masters swim meet in nearby Santa Clarita (scy)! I haven't dived off the blocks in 42 years. When I last raced, goggles hadn't been invented yet, but I'm game for this. So who's coming to join me?

Great to hear that this is scheduled. I will be doing my best to make it likely arriving late Thursday night/first thing Friday morning and leaving on Sunday through LAX (in case anyone wants to coordinate flights so we can share a car).

Very sad to say that I'm out. That's Orthodox Easter weekend plus my daughter's provincial volleyball tournament. Seems like I might have to wait until both girls have graduated before I'll be back to one of these training weekends. Have fun and have an extra drink on the 13th to celebrate my bday!! :)

For those of us who have never participated, is there some link to how it's organized? Is it camping? Motel? Is there a schedule of activities or is it totally free form? Is it for people of all speeds or just the speedsters? I don't want you to reinvent the wheel trying to explain it to me, so if there's some link I've missed, just post that, and I'll read up on it.
Thanks.

All Womens are invited regardless of speed/fitness level. You will likely find a big range of abilities at the camp. I'm very slow and never felt out of place there. Lots of training - you can do as much or as little as you want. Training is pretty informal. Some folks go off on their own, some go for group rides/runs/swims. You'll stay at Monty's house which is kind of like a bed and breakfast. Monty usually cooks dinner for the group, but I'm not sure if that will be the case this time.
Great riding in that area. You can go down to the valley for long, flat stuff or you can do some hill climbing in the other direction. I strongly suggest you bring your own bike, even though it's a pain in the butt. You will enjoy the riding more if you do.
Beautiful spot to just relax, have fun, cuddle with dogs and drink too much. Listen to Monty when he tells you that 2 margaritas is just right and 3 is too much! :)

Thanks! So where, exactly, is Xantusia? So Ca, sure, but is it in the desert east of LA or is it closer to SD? Just trying to figure out how long it will take me to drive down from Sacramento, or whether I should just box my bike up and fly down.

AUGH! I have to be in Japan that week for a biz trip! (leaving the Sat that weekend for 10 days) Waaahhhhhhh!!!! :-( The only thing I could do is come early (Thurs/Fri) and then fly to Narita on Sat. But that'd be out of LAX and a major PITA re: car.

7 hours or so, depending when you leave and how fast you drive on I5.
Flying, you will still drive an hour from Ontario. Not sure who still flies into Palmdale, not to mention it is likely way more expensive to fly into there.

I was waiting for someone to ask that very good question! The only charge is what Monty charges to stay in his home and feed us while we are there.
I'll PM Monty & have him answer this.

You are on your own for lunch, but there is plenty to choose from and you have a full kitchen to work in. Since everyone is on their own schedules, it is just easier that way. As sally said, you can train as much or as little as you like, and at whatever pace. It is more about the getting together and just having some fun, and a little party. As was pointed out, there is a local swim meet that weekend, so if you are inclined, i will probably go and anyone who wants to join is welcome. We sit at about 4200ft, and you look out at about 10,000ft mountains, the air is clean, and the roads are great and clear of traffic. There are 100's of miles of single track trails for running or MTB, and we have loaner bikes for those that wish to leave the hassle and cost of bringing a bike. Just let me know if you are going to need one...Sleeping is two to a room, each with their own bed, and there are some cabin and movie star trailer options for the light sleepers.
So far been a mild winter up here, but that time of year can be really nice, usually in the 70's as the high, and almost always sunny as we are in the high desert..

Tickets purchased!!! I am flying into LAX on Thursday night and out on Monday afternoon but will be driving JenSw back to the airport on Sunday. Flights were way cheaper if I had a day in LA (like $250 less). I will likely be bringing a bike but haven't decided on which (road vs rental). I am thinking my road since I am not the tallest around and mountain bikes are much more friendlier on sizing. Are their any mountain bike loaners available as I would love to get some riding in with AndyPants?
Hmmm, or maybe I bring the cross and 2 sets of wheels. What will everyone else be riding?

SWEEEEEEEEET! Glad you're coming! I'll be driving in from Las Vegas with my tri-bike. If you can fit onto a 47cm road bike, I'd be happy to bring my Trek with 700c wheels.
If I recall correctly, Dan's selection on smaller bikes is pretty limited. The first year I attended the Womens Camp, I rode on a 51c frame, but I'm only 5'2".
Let me know; traveling with two bikes isn't much harder than with one...

You are too coy, Cathy! Camp already places the womens in the company of triathlon legends, like Dan Empfield and Mark Montgomery. A hint is that our dinner guests *may be * current super-stars and industry drivers of the sport!
I hope that as many as possible can make it this year. Cathy, please keep us posted regarding our tentative dinner guests and what night they'll attend.

This is going to be a great camp! I'll be doing a lot of hanging out with the dogs, have no intention to ride. Will get out for hikes and runs.

This is funny. I guess i'm a lurker, ha. Have been extremely obsessed with tris since my first sprint in '10. I'm training for an oly in June, 70.3 in October. I'm a newbie but was already really active and athletic so I hope I can keep pace and learn a lot. Soooo looking forward to meeting new people and experiencing everything.

I have had a lot of inqueries about MTB's, we have none up here at the moment. They are the next in our plan to get, but right now we just have some really sweet road bikes, and an odd tri bike or two. There are plenty, but if you are little you may have to size up, but we have lots of short stems to swap out to make them fit better. So if you have to ride MTB, you will have to bring your own for now. Just remember the road riding up here is awesome too, great roads with very little traffic, so not what most are used to..

Like bees to the hive, Monty and Dan have at this point entrusted us to show up for our annual pilgrimage. To quote "The Field of Dreams", "If you build it, they will come..."
Our camp is sandwiched in between Bike Fit Training, so whatever dry goods we don't consume gets used next week. The horses will savor the extra carrots and the dogs will devour the leftover carnivorous treats if you're unable to make it ;-)

Hi ladies,
I think I'm in this year as well. Probably arriving Thurs afternoon or Friday morning (will confirm when I've booked plane tickets.) I haven't decided if I want to lug my bike down there or not, so I might borrow one of the stable bikes if possible (I'm 5' 9", so hopefully there will be something I can ride.)
Looks like we've got an awesome group going, so I'm looking forward to meeting/seeing everyone!

That is about what we did last time ($20). Everyone brought something that they would think the others would like. Some of the gifts were regional like a wine or candy and others were just cute fun gifts. I can't remember if we drew names at the event did a direct exchange with 1 other individual or if we placed all of the gifts in the center and drew names for the order we picked our mystery gift. Either way it was a good time and I still wear the socks I got from mdraegerpnw.

To help with ideas for the voluntary gift exchange, I'm posting some of what I'm bringing (everybody will hopefully go home with a souvenir).
1. Wine from Jordan Rapp's World Bicycle Relief Charity Raffle
2. "Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas" bike socks
3. Ironman Buffalo Springs Lake TX t-shirt. I did the race 3X and only need one.
Other suggestions include extra race swag, a coffee mug, or key chain that will remind the gift recipient of where the gift giver is from.

I have a suggestion that doesn't cost $. I'm sure we all have a nice(ish) bike jersey or similar gear that no longer suits our needs or wants but is still in great shape. Why not bring something to swap? I have some really nice bike jerseys that I've worn only a few times (sizing). Worth a shot. ???

Longtime lurker, I am planning to join the womens this year at Xantusia. I will drive (up and over Angeles Forest Highway if possible) with my two (tiny) bikes, road to climb the backside of the hill and tri to show off my fit to Slowman and Monty. I am happy to share, if you are very short.
I am registered for the first of the TriEvents race series at Bonelli Park on Sunday. I *may* be persuaded to swim at Santa Clarita on Saturday, having just done my first masters meet last weekend, or I may just drive home Sat. to "rest" (aka detox from Monty's margaritas). If you plan to swim, note that I think you need a USMS membership number to register. If you want to do the sprint or mini-sprint tri, let me know -- individual or ST-womens-relay possible.
Looking forward to spending time with new friends!

This camp is shaping up to be EPIC! And Cathy can weigh in here, but I'm pretty sure we had 15 the first year I came to the camp in '07. I know it was a pretty big group and no one had to sleep outside...
Looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting some new ones!

Keep in mind that although we live in valyermo, the weather station that you are looking at is 5 miles up the mountain from here. You can get a better idea if you plug in Pearblossom for our actual weather here. Looks like plenty of windows for what ever training you gals want to do, and some nice cozy fire times with a glass of whatever warms you..

Sounds like you all are having a blast. Sally is running her a$$ off according to the training logs; 93 miles in the past week?! Rocking!

That was a result of our inaugural and definitely to be repeated, Margarita Mile. A little too much liquid fun and workout posts of 30 miles in 3 minutes!
You'll be happy to know that it has since been corrected ;-)

We had an impromptu Women's Bike Fit Evening Clinic after this morning's session with non other than Slowman himself. The Womens overran his fit studio, testing out saddles and fit positions on our rode bikes for tomorrow.
The unanticipated snow has slowed down, but not stopped our progress in training. Some of us spectated and others swam at the Santa Clarita swim meet today and tomorrow.
