Far over the Misty Mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
The pines were roaring on the height
The winds were moaning in the night
The fire was red, it flaming spread
The trees like torches, blazes with light

Very cool, I had no idea they were making The Hobbit.
As a book and a story it wasn't nearly what the LotR trilogy was, I think the fanboys (myself included) will enjoy the movie but after the success of the three movies I think The Hobbit--unless they completely rework the story--will be a flop with the larger audience. I mean, Fellowship had Moria and the Balrog, Two Towers had Helm's Deep, the Ents and Saruman, and of course Return of the King had multiple battles and the destruction of Sauron. So now they're gonna follow that up with The Hobbit which--if I'm remembering it right--had a confrontation with three trolls and Bilbo stealing the ring from Gollum...not quite the same level of intrigue.

Sadly I did not. My daughter sent me a text and alerted me to the Hobbit sighting.

Good thing I prefaced it with 'if I'm remembering it right' because clearly I'm not! Time to re-read The Hobbit, I guess.
I actually read The Hobbit after reading the trilogy (multiple times), I think I'm projecting my relative disappointment since I didn't enjoy it as much as LotR. But yea, with the dragon and the battle with the army (were they orcs?) they'll have more than enough material to make a quality movie.

IIRC: goblins/wolves vs men/elves/dwarfs at the end battle. No orcs.
There's also the stuff in the middle when they escape from the mountain after Bilbo finds the ring...wolves and goblins chasing around. They could play that up to a big action scene. I think there's plenty to go around. More than Fellowship of the Ring at least.

IIRC, they are making two movies. Of course, The Hobbit itself is insufficient to span two movies (even by Peter Jackson), so they are using other material from the LotR appendices and elsewhere. Thus the Necromancer reference I made. If you watched the trailer, you saw Galadriel, who was not in The Hobbit but was involved at the time in the effort to oust the Necromancer (aka Sauron) from Dol Guldur.
Again, IIRC.

I think, if you want to get technical about it, LOTR isn't even really a trilogy. It was designed as one epic novel, then it was split into 3 volumes, but each volume has 2 books.

Been waiting years for them to finally get off their duffs, settle their differences and bring PJ back to run the show. There was a 10 minute behind-the-scenes that came out a while ago that was getting me all excited.
And the book should be broken up into 2 movies as I would hate to see them leave out content.

Not looking good thus far. If what they're describing is an amplification of the effect that HD has on the original series (and pretty much every movie made in the last 10 years), it doesn't bode well.

Thorin and Company have reached Lake-town and it is time for the hobbit Bilbo Baggins to fulfill his contract with the dwarves. The party must complete the journey to Lonely Mountain and burglar Baggins must seek out the Secret Door that will give them access to the hoard of the dragon Smaug. If Bilbo and the others are able to gain the treasure, will they be able to keep it? And will they discover what has become of the wizard Gandalf?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1170358/
Based on that I think the dragon won't be spotted until the very end of the first movie or perhaps in a flashback when Thorin talks about Smaug. I wouldnt expect to see much of him.

Good point. Actually, I was quite happy with the Foundation trilogy when it was just a trilogy, which formed a reasonably well-rounded whole. After that, it seemed as if Asimov didn't know when to stop, and I think several other authors extended the series even after his death (which Asimov undoubtedly foresaw, using the methods of psychohistory).

Speaking of books, my daughter is so pumped about the Hobbit that she is reading the book.
That probably doesnt sound like a big deal but she was never a big reader until I finally stopped filling her in on the Harry Potter books and told her that if she wanted to know any more she would have to read them herself. She read them all.
Last weekend we went to a bookstore and they had a display of Hunger Games, which she had just watched the night before, and I asked her if she wanted a copy. I told her I was buying a copy of The Hobbit because I hadnt read it in years and offered her a copy as well. ( she's been eyeballing my LOTR but I think she's a little intimidated) I also told her she could have both ( HG and Hobbit) and she said she just wanted The Hobbit for now.
By the next morning she was up to the Goblins in the cave.
