What's the bike and run profile like. What kind of swim is it. Out and back or loop(s)?

Loop swim course - bike and run profiles will be on the web site. Rode the bike course last summer and it has some nice rural roads, small rolling hills. Should be a fast bike course. Run is flat with one small hill that you hit each loop. (three loops) NO GRASS on the run course - all paved roads and pathways!

First of all let me say that we enjoyed a great eight years at Disney with the IM 70.3 Florida event. I took over as RD of the event after the first two years. If anyone did the first race at Disney they will remember the "sand" transition and the "golf course" run! Each year we improved the event with a better bike course. Working with Disney Sports and the Wilderness Campground was challenging but very rewarding as we were able to present a great race with-in the "guidelines" of Disney. In my 25+ years of directing races, the Disney IM 70.3 was both the most difficult and the most rewarding race I've been had the pleasure of producing. Each year, we were challenged to "jump through" another hoop to get the race done and we were able to do so because of the tremendous support from Disney Sports.

The main reason we had to move the race was due to the upcoming construction of a new property at the race site. The Fort Wilderness Campground will be going through a major renovation starting this summer. Our finish line, transition and swim finish will be gone and we really had no other place to put them at the Campground. We looked at other options around Disney property, but were not able to find a good relocation.

When we found out that this would be taking place and we started looking for other sites in Central Florida for the race. Back in the late 1980's early 90's I helped produce a Powerman Duathlon at the Grenlefe Resort near Haines City in Polk Country. I contacted Mark Jackson, Executive Director of Polk County Sports and talked to him about possible sites in Polk County for IM 70.3 Florida.

When we saw the site at Lake Eva in Haines City, we knew if work very well for the event. Lake Eva Park is a city owned faciltiy that includes a wonderful 25 yard pool and splash area, a bandshell with a nice green lawn, tennis courts, pavilions, a community center and a white sand beach. The 56 mile bike course has a little less traffic then our course in Orange County around Disney. The run course is around Lake Eva in a very nice neighborhood.

We are very excited about this new venue and think that it will be great for both athletes and spectators. Familes can stay in hotels or rental houses that are 15-20 min. from the race site and 20-25 min. from Disney and Universal. The new LegoLand in Winter Haven is also under 15 min. away from Haines City.

Hi, Tom! Thanks for the new info! I'll have to work this one into my race plan in the next year or two. I need more states, though! Which other races do you put on besides FL and KS?

Also, I do remember the first year with the golf course run, the beach run, and the trail section. And the second year, when it was blazing hot (of course) and the black astroturf strips to run on the sand in transition were SO hot that I was burning my feet and chose to run on the hot white sand because it was marginally cooler! And I love that my 1/2 IM bike PR was on that course. Lots of good times there, being the Disney girl I am. :) Thanks so much!

Of course it would also be great to see you back at IM 70.3 Florida next year!

Sounds like a smooth transition to a new venue. Kudos to you and your crew. I'll be back down there one of these years.

BTW, there was also a Dannon Duathlon in Haines City in 2003 w/ Greg Watson winning. I only know b/c I raced it and loved it:)

Agree'd.......the website SHOULD have told people that the date and venue may be changing. People have to arrange holidays WAY in advance(1.5 months ago for next year)....Kinda frustrating no REAL news till now....and the old site had no mention what so ever of ANY change?

The date of IM 70.3 Florida has not changed. The race has taken place the weekend after Mother's day in May each year. The venue change could not legally be announced until we had a signed agreement with the county. Polk County Sports has worked very hard on securing this new site and getting support for the race from the Tourist Development Council and the State of Florida. They have committed to support the race for five years.

I looked at your map - you did not go far enough south on Masterpiece - the road you turned on does turn back into Masterpiece, but has another name. Bike course goes down to the next main road right above the lake and then over to scenic Hwy. 17.

I've driving the route about 15 times and cycled it once. It is 56 miles! Z

Hello All,

I went with a few buddies that registered and rode the full 56 mile bike route and it was pretty nice exect masterpiece rd..That road has a ton of holes and its bumpy...about a 4 mile strip. You all have to really pay attention to the road in front of u, if not, u will pop a tire or even bend a rim. its that bad in that 4 mile stretch. The Park is really nice. Looks like there wont be enough parking so that should be a challenge. Other then that....nice area!! looking forward to it.

Best of luck with the new site.

I know you REALLY tried very hard to figure something out with Disney.

I too REALLY wish you were able to work things out there as I love that location.

I am glad I found out before I registered as I wont be doing the race because of the new location.

I am sure you will still sell out and not miss my money.

Good luck to all

We hope to have that section of the course gone over by the county before the race. They all ready paved Kokomo for us! Polk County is really excited about having the race! What did you think about Scenic Hwy.17?

I have to say, I'm stoked about the move away from Disney! Truly and deeply disliked their constant effort to squeeze every last dollar out of you, their excessive control over any sort of behavior that seemed slightly off the "Disney image", i.e. normal triathlete behavior. After having done it twice, I was never going to do it again, which is a shame, as it was so close. Now, with the venue switch, I'm excited about 70.3 in Central Florida again!

Re: Panama 70.3, I did IM Brazil this year, and met a very nice Panamanian, Jamie de St Malo. My impression was that he was also part of the group that is putting the race on; true, or did I misunderstand?

Hi Tom -

I'll be there for my 9th Florida 1/2 Ironman (aka: Florida 70.3). Why the three loop run for the new course? Crowd involvement and logistics for aid stations?

See you there.

Just rode the 56 mile course. Masterpiece Road is in really bad condition with lots of potholes. I live in the area and it is the worst that I have ever seen it! Any word on whether it will be fixed? It looks like another section of Masterpiece has been newly repaved - unfortunately it is not the section that we will be riding.

Otherwise the course is great!

I rode this recently and agree....the multiple, small deep potholes on Masterpiece road are nightmarish (this is for a few miles). I also hope this is going to be re-paved before the race? There was one other road coming back (?name) that had a rough surface for a few miles (bottle ejector status). Otherwise, I liked the bike and run course. The run course is surprisingly hilly for the first half of the loop (which you do three times)...so I would suggest people train for hill running. The bike course has some hills but nothing tough.

Confusion over the distance of the course is caused by the previous map of the bike ride that was posted:

http://ironmanhainescity.com/....3_Bike_2012_TBT.pdf

This map has since been replaced.

The early map showed a right turn at Timberlane Road and Masterpiece Road heading west up to Hwy 17(although the cue sheet correctly said left turn). This resulted in the shorter course that several people have commented on. The later map shows that you turn left onto the pot hole filled section of Masterpiece Road heading south. Masterpiece Road changes names in Lake Wales and becomes Burns Avenue (which goes past Bok Tower) heading west and ends back at Hwy 17 but approximately 2.5 miles further south than the original map did. That is the course distance discrepancy.

Like several other people, I hope the county paves that south section of Masterpiece - its a mess. Remainder of the course is pretty nice.

Tom, you asked how people liked Scenic Hwy 17 - its fun. The course is basically set up so the first 1/3 if flat, the 2nd 1/3 (which starts at Burns thru Hwy 17) has the rolling climbs and the last 1/3 is fairly flat again. On the south end of Hwy 17, there are a number of spots where the bike lane has a lot of debris. Will the entire northbound lane be closed for cyclist?

Roads on the IM 70.3 Florida course will be monitored by Police. Since many of these roads are rural, we can not close them as residents must be able to leave or get home. We are posting and placing course information about the race for residents and letting them know that cyclists will be using the roads on race morning. The section on Masterpiece will be worked on before the race. It will be new pavement for 2013, but they will have to pot holes filled in for this year! Z

I saw they are holding the practice swims. Does this just mean they are dates the course will be marked for practice laps or is there no swimming allowed at Lake Eva on other days? I was planning on making the way up for a course preview but prob can't make the 5/6 practice day. Will I be allowed to swim in the lake on a regular weekday?

can you shed some light on the rationale behind the 30-34 age group (arguably one of the fastest groups) going off dead last. In many other 70.3 races this age group is one of the 1st or 2nd groups to go off?

Yes - I place the older age groups early in the swim waves so that they have a better chance of finishing the race. The fast guys are placed in the back as they will not be out on the course as long. Since the faster athletes start later, the race courses are finished earlier. Bike and Run courses are able to open to traffic. Volunteers, staff and athletes are done with the race in a shorter period of time with these swim waves. With 5 min waves we have found that the bike courss is clean of drafting. Your competitors (people in your age-group) all start at the same time, so no one has an advantage in the race.

A little triathlon history - I directed the first "owned" USAT Age-Group National Championship in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1999 and this system was first used in that race. We were able to close an Interstate Hwy. for the bike course and did 7-12 min. waves. Each Age-group was it's own race.

Tom, is the new swim course shape due to the shallow water depth? If there is no more rain in the next 3 weeks do you forsee any more potential changes as the water level drops off?

Re: Ask me anything about the new site for IM 70.3 Florida! [scutlerb] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

The swim course is designed to keep athletes in 4 ft or more of water. Along the shore, the lake is shallow. There is also a shallow section between the two large areas of the lake. When we first looked at the lake last year, that shallow section was about 4 ft. deep. It is now about 2 ft deep, so we will not be able to go into that other section of the lake. Polk County is working with the State of Florida to dig out a channel between these two sections of the lake in order for boats to have a route between them. For this year, we will use an M shaped swim in the section of the lake on the Lake Eva Park side. I swam the course and the only time a was able to stand up was at the start and than at about 30 years from the finish. Even if we do not see any rain during the next three weeks, there will still be plenty of water in the lake for the swim.

Looks like a M45-49 (7:00AM start) would have to leave T2 by 2:51 (9:51AM) to have a chance of running with Lance. At that time, LA will be 3:21 into his race (6:30AM start). Leaving T2 in 2:30 (9:00AM - 25' swim + 2:05 bikes including transitins), he will be around 8.5 miles (assuming 6' pace), and pass you shortly after you leave T2. I'm not obsessed with Lance. So to run wiht LA, you'll need a 30' swim + a 2:20 bike including transitions.

Tom,

We rode the bike course on Sunday. The patching on Masterpiece Road is a big improvement altho it will wait to next year's repaving to be really good. Kokomo Road and Tyner Road's repaving is spectacular. Reports I heard from other riders is that they like the bike course also.

Please have them check at the following signs (or lack of signs):

Timberlane and Masterpiece: The turn sign shows right heading west instead of left heading south to Lake Wales - its from the earlier map.

Hwy 17 & 8th Street - there is no sign. I heard several groups missed the turn and continued up Hwy 17.

Pray for rain for the lake and this will be a great event. Folks who ran said the run course is tough with the climbing.

Thanks,

Dan

Ran the the run course it is "tough" since the first hill comes quickly out of T2. And it is hot. There was quite a bit of car traffic on the side streets on the back side of the course hope we do not piss them off to much.

One quick question about masterpiece. Most of the patching is along the right. I rode more in the middle of the lane and it was relatively smooth. Riding there there is still room for one bike to pass. Even so will I be in danger of a blocking penalty if I ride in the middle of the lane?

Ran the the run course it is "tough" since the first hill comes quickly out of T2. And it is hot. There was quite a bit of car traffic on the side streets on the back side of the course hope we do not piss them off to much.

The Run course has one hill that you go up three times - once on each loop. There is an aid station on top of the hill that will have a special 50+ only tent with ice cold water, a few lounge chairs and some young people to take care of you! See you in Haines City! Z

Hey Tom, What is the approximate distance of each of the segments of the swim course?

1/4 mile long - not very steep, but the entire course is flat, so it look like a BIG hill. Z

Good question. Our Swim Director is still in St. George, but I'll contact him about the distances and try to get them for you. Z

it is one hill but feels like 2...check out the elevation profile...once you take a right on 10th it feels like up, down, then up...to about mile 1.6. really not bad though.

Okay, how can there be no "Lance Florida 70.3 Mania" going on here? I'll start:

  • I bet he swims so fast that he straightens out the new "W" swim course so that my wave, M4549, essentially swims a straight line;
  • He melts the pavement enroute to a 1:47 bike split, leaving all rough spots smooth as silk;
  • Only Ryan Hall can hand LA water bottles at the aid station bc no one else can run with LA for more than 3 yards;
  • With a 17 min swim, 1:47 bike, and 59 min run, LA wins in 3:06:xx and greats every athlete at the finish line...before each athlete even finishes.
It's going to be awesome!

I ran. I ran until my muscles burned and my veins pumped battery acid. Then I ran some more.

What about sunscreen? This is my first 70.3 and with it being in Florida....do I need to bring some suncreen or is it provided?

Probably best to bring your own. I think the easiest thing is spray on. much better than having to rub creamy Sun block on.

When you come down to pick up your packet you will see lots of side streets and small parking lots within 1/2 mile of Lake Eva. There is also a Middle School and the Haines City High School parking on Grace Street about 1 mile from the site.

Have you covered the spectator issues yet? Is this spectator friendly? Where are the best areas? My wife said she heard that spectators around the finish chute was not going to be allowed?

Also, has the lake filled at all?

Tom,

Are there transition tents, or is our transition in the open next to our bikes? Thanks for the info!

Where in the world did your wife hear that spectators would not be allowed near the finish line chute? Of course, we will have plenty of room for spectators near the finish line. The park is also a great place to put out a blanket and watch the swim and run course! There is a great playground for the kids and the aquatic center will be open for families to use during the day on Saturday and Sunday! Z

I have been to the park 3 times to ride the course and run etc... it truly is a very nice location IMO. TZ, it would be awesome if that pool area, mini water park was open after the race (or at least accessible for a fee). On training days there, they have been very nice about letting you in to the locker rooms to use the showers.
