Personally, I don't like it. One of the cool things about this event was finishing down in the FQ on Decatur. Sure, probably not the easiest place to access for spectators but it was one of the most unique finishes in my experience.

Not a fan of this change at NOLA and not a fan of them combining 70.3 and 5150 events. What if I want to qualify in both distances.

The final few miles of the run were definitely the highlight of the race for me, and I'm sure for many others - so cool running down Esplanade then Decatur with them closed to traffic and the big crowds lining both. No way that experience will be duplicated by keeping the run inside the park. At least they admitted it was due to financial considerations of trying to lower the cost of the 5150 race. Glad I did this last year.

it will be awesome! both races this year (70.3 and 5150) cancelled the swims! 2 du's on the same day! sweet!!
as a person who relies on the swim-i wont be doing any races at venues that cancel swims--"due to unsafe WIND conditions-we cant set the buoys"

5150 was a bomb last year, the only way it was going to make it was to piggyback 70.3. The option of keeping them on seperate days wasn't an option. It was either same day, or not at all for 5150.

As far as the finish line, I like the location. Same finish spot as the Crescent City Classic, Rock N Roll Marathon & Half etc. and it definitely offers more in the way of a true post race party. One of the HUGE benefits about New Orleans is after you finish, if you want to enjoy the after party, you're still only about 4 miles from Bourbon Street. Parking will more attainable in the quarter (because less spectators will be occupying spots).

The biggest draback is the final .5 miles of the run. It was really cool to run down Decatur Street from Esplanade.

BUT, until Bill Burke does something to guarantee me that he is investing into proper/experienced water safety personel that can handle .5 ft seas, I'll never register for one of his NOLA races again.

If the winds come anywhere near to out of the north, there's a chance this swim might get cancelled until he has a water crew here who can laungh jet skis, kayaks etc. and has more exerience than Kayaking down Bayou St. John.

Darn. I signed up because I liked the old run course and finishing in the FQ. :(

Anyone have links to course maps now?
Is it a two loop run?

what will happen to logistics of getting to/from race start vs. finish vs. hotel? It was going to be convenient to shuttle to race start, finish by the hotel, get the car and go get the bikes. Now...?????

So they're going to reduce the entry fees too, right? I mean, since they're doing it partially to reduce costs, that means the cost they anticipated, and thus passed along to participants, will be less with the combined event. I look forward to my partial reimbursement!!

I was trying to decide between NOLA and Galveston this year as my early season race. Galveston it is.

This is terrible, there is now absolutely nothing interesting about NOLA. You swim in the wildly unpredictable Pontchatrain (I say that with some sarcasm) you go on a pretty boring bike that was full of construction zones last year and then you run in a park. All for about $300.

The ONLY reason to do NOLA was the final 2 or 3 miles down Esplanade and into the Quarter. The finish in the Quarter makes it nice for family too because they can spend all day downtown and then just walk over for the finish.

I'll pass.

so where is the finish now (I'm not very familiar with NOLA). Closer to the start? Not in the downtown area?

I'm trying to decide between NOLA and St Croix (well, I'm not deciding, other factors will decide for me). I don't really care about the scenery races, just logistics for the parents who like to come cheer.

Finish now will be in the park (not far from where mile 9 of the run used to be).

Actually, parking is worse at the park, as hard as that is to believe.

Agreed, parking in the park is a headache. And, with knowing the roads around the park will be closed off for the run I bet it will be worse than expected. At least the FQ has many different entry and exit points as well as a variety of places to park.

With the prospect of a cancelled swim, the less than smooth 56 mile ride (small amount of redemption when you get to ride on 510, which is completely shut down on one half for the race), and the relocated finish I am so glad I hadn't signed up for this event yet.

Logistics will still be a headache:

- expo down at the Hilton Riverside
- bike drop up at UNO
- back downtown to stay the night -- I imagine most athletes from out of town will still stay somewhere near the FQ/downtown/Garden District
- drive up to UNO for race start
- finish in the park
- hop a shuttle back to UNO
- back to hotel/hit the road for home

For athletes, there is no logisitical improvement with this plan compared to what has gone on the previous 3 years for this event. And, the best part of the race has disappeared (i.e. running down Esplanade/Decatur and into the Quarter).

x2 - This completely knocks this race off of my planned 2012 schedule. I've been there and done the races that have two distances going at the same time and while yes this might make things smoother for the suits. It will most likely cause the traffic on course to become more easily congested. And running through the quarter was awesome! I had beignets waiting at the finish last year. Plus the track record shows no swim. IMO this race has gone the way of the birds and I'll just change to Galveston a couple weeks earlier now. Pissed me off but hey what can one lonely person do about it.

Since I'm already signed up....is it hard to find parking at race start area? And I do assume they will be re-doing the shuttle from the finish to UNO instead of from the FQ to UNO.
I *was* thinking....stay at Hilton; drive bike to UNO; shuttle to start in morning; after finish get car at the Hilton and go fetch bike from UNO.

Now, I guess: stay in FQ; drive bike to UNO; DRIVE to race start; shuttle from finish to UNO; drive back to hotel.
So maybe not too bad.

So are the roads worse than what the course used to be, or the same level of 'suckiness' just different roads? I didn't think the roads were bad in previous years (I guess I used to bad roads in Hawaii), but I guess others did.

Parking at the start is ample.

My only suggestion would be to stay somewhere other than the host hotel if you are driving to the start. It's a huge hotel and it is chaos checking in, parking, unloading, etc. There are plenty of places to stay that won't be overloaded with athletes.

I don't know what the issues are with the roads. There was a bad out and back on a service road that was a couple of miles, but other than that it's pretty smooth.

Re: NOLA 70.3 2012 [GhiaGirl] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

No, parking won't be better. Downtown/Quarter offers a ton of pay parking garages, and my friends and family actually managed to find two street parking spots within a block from the finish. However, for most people, parking is a total non-issue because you park at your hotel or in a garage and walk over to the finish. We only parked in the area because we are sort of local and were going straight home after the race.

The problem with the park is that all of the spectators will be converging onto the area around the same time. They won't be staying or hanging out in the park like they would be in the quarter. Assuming the average finisher is somewhere between 5-7 hours, I would guess there will be a mass influx of vehicles around 5 hours after the start. And the other problem: the roads will be closed. New Orleans can be difficult to navigate when all the roads are open.

and by the way, every other major race that is held in New Orleans finishes in City Park. It's awesome there. The old finish was one of the best in triathlon so from that perspective it's disappointing. But if you are signed up for the race you will still have a decent course with the City Park finish.

City Park regularly handles 40k+ person races. It's easy to street park there and walk to the finish.

For those races (Crescent City Classic and Turkey Day Race) most or all the streets surrounding the park remain open (including Robert E Lee, Marconi, Harrison, Wisner, City Park venue, etc). It is hard to imagine a 13 mile running race that commences at UNO and finishes at Roosevelt Mall and leaves those streets open (Marconi, Wisner, Harrison have all been used in previous years and that still left 3 miles to go after the park).

In addition, the races you are referencing have pretty substantial parking issues:

When has City Park, or NOLA for that matter, ever had a 40k+ person race?
The largest NOLA races ever were during the running boom in the 70s when the CCC had 30k, and that race ended at Audubon Park. Even with spectators City Park has never handled a 40k+ person race. The closest to a 40k+ person event in CP would be Voodoo Fest, and with no streets closed for it (except inside the park) the parking was terrible.
Yep, agree with the earlier posted links - Don't park on the Neutral Grounds (medians).

The RNR Mardi Gras Marathon and Half finish in City Park - point to point race starting at the convention center. If I remember correctly, they had the outside perimeter roads blocked for the last part of the marathon, some of which were the same roads for NOLA 70.3. As far as parking, when I did this in 2010, they discouraged spectators from driving to City Park and bused people in and out of the park to and from the Superdome and downtown hotels.

Has anyone heard any news more recent than the Nola.com article? The official website, ironmanneworleans.com, is still being advertised on the homepage as, "Come race through the city of New Orleans and finish in front of Jackson Square in the French Quarter!" Also, the run course map is still showing the finish in the FQ. Have the organizers changed their mind about the finish line or are they just painfully slow at changing the event's website?

I signed up for this race due to the fact that it ended in the quarter and I could walk to our apartment in NO after the race. I wouldnt have signed up if I knew it was going to end way on the other side of town! The website still says finish on Decatur in front of Jackson square, if it has changed that is B.S.

I have done 3 races by Premiere Event Management (Bill Burke's company), including the inaugural NOLA 70.3. I have been very disappointed in all 3 races. When I contacted the company each time to address problems after each race, they never accept responsibility for anything. For the inaugural NOLA 70.3, Bill actually blamed the athletes for the lack of water on the bike course and for the athletes not being prepared! I will not do another one of his races.

Looks like the run course was updated on the website, along with the 2012 participant list. Run is now finishing at the University of New Orleans Technology Park, where transition is. Very disappointing, to say the least. For me, the allure of this race was finishing in the Quarter.

Yep, I'm out because of the run change. Plus the fact that the swim has actually happened once over the 3/4 year period?

The one thing the city has to offer IMO (the French Quarter) and you take it out of the equation? I know it's a nightmare to put together like that, but the finish line in Jackson Square was right up there, if not better, than the Ironman man finish lines I've done and now to take it away for the UNO campus? Not a good move

Agree, I did it last year, was frustrated by the lack of swim and the only thing that made it a remotely enjoyable experience was the final 2 miles of the run down Esplanade into the quarter.

Just running around in NOLA suburbs sounds like a nightmare.

To be specific, the swim did take place the first 2 years, and was canceled the third year. That same year the 5150 swim was also canceled.
It is too bad that the run doesn't finish in the FQ this year. The only positive is that will be easier logistically for the athletes, their followers and the race management.
FWIW, to the other poster, I've done many PEM/B. Burke races and enjoyed them all. The first IMNOLA 70.3 water sitch was unfortunate and the management response was poor, but the following year that issue and others were fixed.

Not to be doom and gloom, but this course will also provide nearly no shade at all for the first 6 or so miles and for the last 4 or 5. Maybe some reprieve for that little bit in the park, but that is it.

Going to get hardcore if it is warm out.

The website is down for me....But it still says "Come race through the city of New Orleans and finish in front of Jackson Square in the French Quarter!".

I'm 50/50 on doing this race. I live in Chicago, so it's pricey to go to Nola for 3 nights. Can't decide either way.

Agreed, this race will be off the map in the next year I wager. The allure certainly was the run down Esplanade, hang a right onto Decatur, and the finish in front of Jackson Square.

With a cancelled swim last year and now this finish at UNO, this race WILL lose participants. Heck, WTC may as well not even call is "NOLA 70.3." Why not call it the "Metairie 70.3"?

All sarcasm aside, they may as well move the packet pickup/expo out to UNO. Why ask all of the participants to drive to downtown just to get their packets and then EVERYTHING else is out at UNO for the rest of the weekend? There is no incentive to stay downtown anyhow, may as well stay at a hotel off of I-10.

WTC screwed this great event up in a big way. Sad.

RE: Commemoration Event Activities

New Orleans will serve as the inaugural city in a three-year national celebration commemorating the War of 1812 and the Star-Spangled Banner. The celebration will take place April 17 – 23, 2012, featuring a memorable Air Show with the Navy’s famed Blue Angels and a colorful spectacle of ships along the East Bank of the Mississippi River. The U.S. Navy’s amphibious warship USS Wasp, along with other large navy vessels, will welcome Class A tall ships from countries around the world to New Orleans for the celebration. Ships will be open for public visiting. (New Orleans will also host the final event of the Bicentennial in 2015, marking the 200th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans.)

The Blue Angels Air Show is among the many other activities schedule to take place in the city that week. The Air Show is scheduled on Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22 and is planned to take place over Lake Pontchartrain behind the eastern portion of the UNO Main Campus stretching to the Lakefront Airport, with the official designated viewing area located behind UNO East Campus and SUNO. (See diagram below.)

The University of New Orleans is working closely with the organizers of the event, who expect to draw crowds of 40,000 – 50,000. The University plans to use the East Campus grounds as well as portions of the main campus for paid parking. UNO parking decals will be given access to the campus and parking areas will be designated for the UNO community. All details are still being worked out.

That weekend is also the annual Ironman Triathlon on Sunday which creates additional challenges. That event takes place along the lakefront as well and uses portions of the university grounds, Lakeshore Drive, and various public streets. All parties are working together to make sure the events do not conflict with each other. But despite the considerable amount of planning, very little can be done to avert the tremendous amount of traffic that will occur that weekend when 40,000-50,000 spectators converge on the lakefront.
The reason for this email is to ask the entire UNO Community for assistance.

All departments are asked to refrain from as many activities as possible on the main campus on Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22, 2012. Ingress and egress to the University of New Orleans will be extremely challenging and any planned activity on the campus will most certainly be affected. Please consider rescheduling those activities planned for that weekend to another weekend or relocate them to the Jefferson Campus or another venue away from this area. Space is limited, so you are asked to take this as an opportunity to avoid any possible last minute issues. If you would like to schedule your activity in Metairie, please email or call:

If there is an event or activity that positively must take place on that weekend, departments are asked to notify Campus Booking so plans can be executed accordingly. While it is strongly suggested that all activities that weekend are rescheduled or relocated, everything will be done to work with departments that must schedule events that on these days. If you would like to schedule your activity at the main campus on Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22, 2012, please email or call:

This event is being hosted by the city and provides excellent opportunities for the University. Lakefront Arena Management is overseeing all Main Campus, East Campus and Jefferson Campus activities and will work with all departments to insure the least disruption as possible. That weekend will be hectic and everyone is doing everything that can be done to avoid as much inconveniences as possible.

And the hits just keep on coming. March 7th is the last date to request the partial ($75) refund. I need to really think about this. I can live with the run change. I don't like it but I can deal with it. Having all this shit going on at UNO during the same time is just going to make it a pain in the ass. Hmmmmmm....

UNO barely had enough parking for the 70.3 as it was before, and that was when a good amount of the athletes were carpooling or taking shuttles from the hotel. Now, add to it the airshow traffic?!?! This is going to be a nightmare.

The plus is that the racers will be there long before the air show folks, as far as parking is concerned; late arriving spectators on the other hand, not good.

My bigger worry is that all these folks will be walking along and across lakeshore and other parts of the lakefront as a couple thousand cyclists go by in aero position.

In all honesty, when I registered for this event I did so with the expectation of running into Jackson Square for the finish instead of a meandering course through the neighborhoods of Lakeview. Ironman New Orleans should step up and offer refunds to those who relied on the course from last year when they registered.

I sent them the following email:

I apologize if you have been inundated with emails regarding the new run course and the issues regarding other events at the Univ. of New Orleans the same weekend but I would like to express my concerns.

Part of the allure of the 70.3 race in New Orleans was the run and finish in the French Quarter. That was a major factor in why I registered for the event. That's extremely unique to the city and cannot be matched anywhere else. I was very disappointed when it was decided the 5150 race would be held on the same day and the run course was changed to finish in City Park. There is nothing unique about finishing in a park. The 5150 decision was then reversed and it looked like the run course would once again finish in the French Quarter. The latest run course has the race finishing at the Univ. of New Orleans... once again taking away from the uniqueness of the course and the event. Parking in an around New Orleans is always an issue. Will the expo and packet pickup be moved to the Univ. of New Orleans area since the race is now completely centered there? It's almost unfair to have people go downtown, struggle with and pay for parking to just pickup a packet and then drive out to the University to drop off our bikes. I know that's how things were done in the past but it now seems ridiculous considering the race goes nowhere near downtown or the Quarter.

Then there's the news that an airshow will be happening at the Univ. of New Orleans the same weekend as the 70.3. That event is expected to draw 40,000-50,000 spectators to the University area. Parking and traffic in an around the University was difficult enough for race participants and their families/friends in the past so what will it be like with 50,000 additional people at the same exact location? It sounds like a logistical nightmare. What about safety concerns on the bike and run course with all that additional traffic? I have copied the text of an email sent to the Univ. of New Orleans faculty and staff earlier this week. It reads as follows:

FYI - For all those Fbook users, the race director will be answering questions next Tuesday:
We have gotten a great response from everyone with the race director's chats! We are going to keep them coming, and will feature Ironman 70.3 New Orleans next. Go to the Ironman 70.3 page on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 3 p.m. EST with any race related questions and race director Bill Burke will give you your answers! And also this was just posted on the Ironman website:

New Orleans is known as one of the most culturally rich destinations in America. Once a year, this city steeped in art, history and music, plays host to Ochsner Ironman 70.3 New Orleans. Athletes travel from all over to take part in this unique event and scenic course, which flows throughout this fascinating area.

On April 22, athletes will begin their day on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, swimming 1.2 miles, point-to-point along the Lakeshore Drive seawall. The journey continues with the 56-mile, out-and-back bike course, followed by a 13.1-mile run along the lakefront. Competitors will finish on the campus of the University of New Orleans Research and Technology Park to the sound of live music. “The Big Easy,” as the city is famously called, is a favorite event among racers, as well as spectators. With strong influences from diverse places like France, Africa and the Caribbean Islands, New Orleans is filled with an endless variety of things to discover and explore. Visitors can sample delectable cuisine at famous restaurants like Antoine’s and Acme Oyster House, or venture to a more casual spot like Cafι Du Monde or Ralph’s on the Park. Music is everywhere in New Orleans, but some of the best venues to soak in some jazz, zydeco or blues are the Spotted Cat, House of Blues and Preservation Hall. Finally, there is a tour option for everyone; whether you are a history buff or paranormal thrill-seeker, these guided excursions offer visitors of all interests a chance to learn about the city’s intriguing past.
This year, Ochsner Ironman 70.3 New Orleans will offer something extra for visitors to enjoy; the event will be held on the same weekend as Navy Week, the 200th celebration of the Battle of New Orleans, which took place during the War of 1812. Festivities will be held throughout race week, including an air show from the United States Navy’s Blue Angels, at Lakefront Airport. In addition, various flight demonstrations will be flying over bike check-in from 1 to 4 PM on Saturday, as well as over the finish line area from 1 to 4 PM on Sunday. Athletes and spectators will be able to enjoy these shows from the race site, free of charge, as part of race weekend.

Although it would be nice to finish in Jackson Square, I'm fine with it finishing at UNO. I did Kansas 70.3 last year where you're stuck in a state park outside of town all day. Anything has to be better than that.

Why is it so hard for race directors to update their website with current information? The NOLA 70.3 site has a half a$$ed version of a Schedule of Events and a run course map that clearly contradicts the info on the front page of the website.

Now they're offering a $199 price when all of us that registered early had to pay $250?

What a joke.

finishing in jackson square was a joke and mess last year. I did not even really see it. Such a mess of people. I am not sure why everyone wants to finish there and then figure out a way back to transition to get your stuff? I for one am very very happy that it is going to start and finish in the same place. If you want to see jackson square drive down there. I mean it is nice but it is not the end all be all of nola.

If you could see Elysian Fields at Leon C Simon right now (one lane heavy construction) then you would know that there may be some traffic challenges under ideal conditions.

How was finishing in Jackson Square a joke and a mess last year? I started very, very late, and so after I had eaten and taken a break after my finish I went back to the finish line and noticed that pedestrian control was sort of falling apart and a lot of people were starting to clog the final half mile, but other than that I didn't see any problems. Transition stays open hours after the finish so there is no rush to get back down there.

Additionally, NOLA 70.3 was such a good family trip because instead of waiting in the middle of nowhere for 5-6 hours for someone to finish, family can wander the French Quarter and then head over to the finish line. Have fun convincing your significant other that hanging out at UNO is going to be fun. Though their will be an airshow.

But I'm glad some people are excited to be going to NOLA. I was never going to do this race due to a conflict, but I don't want the race to die. It just needs to get a lot better. I'll be in NOLA for the Rock N' Roll Marathon.

The race was a joke last year. Race director had 6-7 4 foot lake kyacks and a bunch of younger looking people standing next to them. Hardly an imperssive crew. It's no secret that Ponch can be very choppy depending on the wind direction so why they did not use boats and jet skis like the prior years is unacceptable. Heck, on Sat am the day before the race they could have used some of that money they "earned" and called in a fleet of boats to help. That water was totally swimablem and wetsuit legal. So with no swim the race turned into a massive draft fest on the bike. Nobody cared about a penalty and it showed. I saw some very large (25+ bikes) groups riding inches from each other. While the finish location was nice, the post race food and drinks were very weak. Overall, I gave it a failing grade.

I don't disagree. Overall, the race was a fail. I thought there were tons of problems. The host hotel was packed, traffic is always a nightmare in NOLA, I got to the expo about an hour before it closed and most of the vendors were already packed and ready to go, getting to UNO is always terrible, and then there were the race day problems. No reason we couldn't swim, especially since some of us went off darn near 9am and the water was calm by then. A delayed start could have solved all those problems. Even without a delayed start, the water was fine.

I saw the draft groups too, but that happens in every race. I didn't see any referees though.

However, the point I was responding to was the statement that Jackson Square is a nightmare. The food was a joke (local 5ks have better post-race food), but I really didn't see anything logistically wrong with the staging of the finish line.

I agree with you on the finish setup. It was an unique location and as you said my wife and kids found it easy to burn time during the day. I'm only so critical of the race becuase it had so much potential to be a first class event and the race director totally blew it.

I registered on Feb 1st for $199, I was pleasantly surprised by that price tag, especially considering right after I registered for NOLA I registered for Augusta and it was $275, almost $300 after the fees.

UNO has had plenty of parking the first three years of this race. This will certainly change things, but there has been TONS of unused parking on campus.

Yeah, I loved the Jackson Square finish but it just makes better sense to keep everything out at the lake front. I don't know why people have such issues driving to UNO? There is ample parking and it's not a difficult place to be. Plus running around City Park is great!

I did get a response from the WTC, they did confirm the race will end at the university and then proceeded to try to convince someone that has an apartment in New Orleans, ME, that this will be much better and there will be so much more to do. Oh and BTW I requested a refund since I was lied to about the race venue and I no longer wanted to participate, they graciously offered a partial refund of $75 when I paid a DA** $250 to enter the F-N race and now entry is $199. This race crew is a joke, I will never give this guy another cent.

Welcome to Ironman branded racing. They always screw you on money.

I suggest you suck it up and do the race. You know Nola, you can really enjoy doing that course, and it's all centralized now. I actually have nothing against the bike course and prefer it to any other race I've done. And running city park is awesome! Yes it sucks that they jerked you around but it's Nola...nothing works like it should but it works anyway.

For those of us that dont know the area, where would you suggest staying now? I like to use Priceline and it looks like the most popular areas are downtown, arts center, fq, and convention center.

Would you suggest somewhere else? I dont really care where i stay. Id rather mot pay over 150 a night though.

Reply from IM NOLA Staff on asking for free 5150 registration:

Thank you for your email. I understand that you're frustrated that you were not able to take advantage of the combo pricing that is being offered at this time. Our race, as is the case with most any business, offers discounts, sales, and promotions from time to time to generate excitement and interest in their product. The same goes for races all over the country. We appreciate that you are registered for the event and feel that we will be offering a superb product for the athletes at this year's Ochsner Ironman 70.3 race.

We can offer to you a $25.00 discount on an entry into the New Orleans 5150 race or the Big Easy Sprint if you wish. Please let me know if you are interested in that and I will email you an entry form.

I am beyond pissed. I feel like I have been cheated and lied to.

At least you will only be frustrated once and not twice because you will not be doing the 5150.

I live in Baton Rouge and really like to race Olympic distance triathlons but there is no way I will be signing up for the 5150 in New Orleans after what happened last year even though there are not to many Olympic distance tris around here. I will gladly travel to do a Setup Events or a Team Magic race instead of doing the 5150 in New Orleans.

But out there it all depends on when weather pattern at the time. If there is a storm system before or during it's going to be more humid than usual. From what we noticed when we went in 2009 is that it's generally cooler and more of a breeze around the lake, and it was more humid during the run and the lack of wind didn't help. So having the whole race closer to the lake may help :) If you have any questions let us know! :)

In my experience, at IronMan races the referees are very tolerant of drafting among the age groups. WTC does not like to give out many penalties to its paying customers. IMO, WTC wants its paying customers to be very happy and satisfied with it's product (race). They want their customers to keep coming back, just like any business. I thnk they should enforce the rules fairly and consistently. All participants are respopnsible for knowing the rules.

"Best" is lways going to be subjective, even when defined as you have.

"Reasonably priced" is a very individual criteria. I race in New Orleans several times a year and have done so for 20 years, including the R'n'R this Sunday. If I'm paying the bill I stay in the suburban hotels, like the La Quinta near I-10 and Causeway, which Expedia shows as ~$80 per night for the IM70.3 weekend. By comparison, the cheapest decent hotel downtown looks like it's running ~$150, plus you'll have to pay at least $25/night to park your car. Expedia has the cheapest available room downtown at $229 per night on race weekend.

The location I cite is probably as close or closer to the race venue as any downtown hotel. If "things to do before/after" include the French Quarter (which they should) then of course a downtown hotel has an advantage. But if you have a car the FQ is no more than 15 minutes from Metairie, and there is usually plenty of parking in the FQ.

But if you plan on imbibing to excess it may be worth paying 3x the rate for a room within staggering distance.

Thanks for the great info. It looks as though I will have a car so probably spend fri/sat night at a cheaper hotel a small distance away. Then spend sun night within staggering distance for the usual "imbibing to excess" that tends to occur post race.

How far is the race start to/from the FQ? I know they have a shuttle to the race from the Hilton in the morning, but how do you get back after the race (with your bike?) Just ride i'd guess, but i don't know the distance.

I've been bidding on Priceline for FQ a ton, but haven't gotten anything yet. I'm not sure if I will have a car down there, so want to stay in the heart of the city. I know it'll cost a premium, that's why I've been doing my Priceline bids a few times each week. Eventually it'll take one of my bids (hopefully). I know the air show is that weekened and there's also a big conference which is why most of the hotels are close to sold out.

On another note, has anyone ever taken the Amtrak from Chicago to New Orleans? It's only $117 each way and I will sleep most of the time. It's cheaper than driving and easier. Plus it looks like Bikes may be free? I'm really thinking of doing that instead of driving the 16 hours.

I agree 100%. Stay in the FQ if you can. Nola isn't like other cities. The fun part is still the place to be regardless of where the race finishes. I don't know why anyone would stay in Metairie? You probably won't save money and it's less convenient for just about everything.

$80 (and less) vs $230 (and up) on expedia today, not sure how you can say "you probably won't save money." I agree it's less convenient, but how much do you want to pay for that convenience. As I said, it's all subjective.

You gotta look around. Expedia is for suckers. There's always deals in the FQ. But if you have to stay in Metairie it's not the end of the world. Parking in the FQ is easy. Parking in City Park is easy. And parking at the race start is easy.

I'm not sure what the deal is for people complaining about parking. How much spoon feeding do people need? Get out a map and figure it out. City Park regularly hosts multiple events at once. It has parked the Crecent City Classic. It has done fine with marathons. All of these events have more than quadruple the people of one ironman event. I'm pretty sure that parking is not going to be a problem.

So much mis-information here from a couple of people.

I've never had trouble parking in City Park, the problem is that traffic, but that is a New Orleans problem, not a race problem.

As for rooms, the FQ is going to be expensive, but if this is your first trip to New Orleans, it would be pretty disappointing not to see the fun part. However, if you are a regular (I live close, and I'm actually typing this from a condo on Royal. Here for the marathon tomorrow.) Metairie can be a decent option. No hassle of getting into the FQ, easy to get out of to get to the race, and it won't cost you $30 a night to park your car.

That being said, if you eat in Metairie then don't even bother coming.

Ha I mostly agree, but c'mon, there are tons of good food options outside the FQ. When I lived in Nola I would rarely go to the FQ for food, in part because who can afford to eat at Galatoie's every day. And to that point, restaurants like Commander's Palace are not in the FQ at all. So you don't have to write off other options. The FQ is just the best place to get the Nola experience as a tourist.

How can anyone argue against the traffic problems in Nola? You have to know all the back routes. But is this really any different from a race in DC, NYC, or San Diego? There's always logistical issues for each race site. You deal with them. It turns out that people who race Nola 70.3 just complain more loudly than most.

Condo on Royal is baller. Have a great race and a great time!!

Just signed up for the race as prep for IM Texas. Any idea what the water temp usually is and if it might be non-wetsuit? I will not be wearing a suit in Texas so it would be nice if this was non wetsuit as well. Even if it is wetsuit legal I might just wear my swimskin but I hate giving away time even though I do not care about qualifying for the 70.3 WC again as I will be doing IM Wisco that weekend. I am excited to get a race in before Texas and getting in the heat and humidity will be nice too.

Last year was going to be wetsuit legal before they cancelled it. The year before that was also legal.

My understanding is that it is always close to the edge, but they find a way to make it legal. After all, no one wants to be in Pontchatrain without some protection

Yeah I feel like they do that whenever it's close. They use different areas for temp readings or whatever. Is the lake dirty? Why would you need protection? I'm coming from Chicago so I have zero clue about the lake. Luckily my sister lives there so I'll save a lot of money on not needing a hotel or car.

The water temp is usually pretty warm but somehow has been wetsuit legal the past few years. Plus, you can still have cool fronts come through during that time of year, so keep an eye out for that.

The biggest obstacle for this course is wind. The bike can get really windy! And of course big winds will ruin the swim, too.

Why didn't they just move it back 1 week? This is the kind of stuff that is making this race such a buzz kill and it's getting a bad reputation for being an epic fail.. I'll still do it but it's gonna be a slow training event.. bummer..

Lake Pontchartrain used to be a lot worse until they stopped dredging about a decade back. Seriously, it was always a muddy brown -- swam in it for years as a kid but never got sick. These days, I'd say the water is decent. On a windy day with the chop it will get stirred up but most of the time the water's on the clearer side.

Just hope they don't open the spillway like they did last year: it was actually a good thing the 5150 swim was cancelled due to wind/wave conditions, otherwise swimmers were in for some really funky stuff from upstream.

    I need advice!

I booked one of the hotels that was suggested on the race website - Embassy Suites New Orleans - Convention Center (315 Julia Street, New Orleans, LA). However, the only had rooms available Fri-Mon and I'm going Thurs-Mon. They set it up so that I can stay at the Hilton Garden Inn New Orleans French Quarter/CBD (821 Gravier Street, New Orleans, LA) on that Thursday.

The Hilton sounds better than the Embassy, so I called them directly and they gave me the same rate to stay there Thurs-Mon.

My question is, does anyone know which is a better hotel? The prices are very similar. I don't know the area at all. The Hilton says it's in the FQ, but it's a few blocks from the river, whereas the Embassy Suites is right now the river.

    Thanks in advance!

I would probably choose the FQ one just so I didn't have to change hotels, and it is also closer to Jackson Square (the primary tourist attraction) and a lot of good restaurants on that side of Canal. The convention center one isn't that much further and both are within walking distance of everything. I'm not sure if there is much of a view of the river from the Embassy Suites, so I don't know if that is really a selling point. Just from knowing the area, it could be slightly quieter than the FQ location.

That is why I recommend simplifying your travel. Neither is a bad hotel, neither really presents a big upgrade. You'll be fine at both.

I haven't stayed at either hotel, but I'm very familiar with the area. I would go with the Hilton. It's at the corner of Gravier and Carondelet and Carondelet turns into Bourbon once you cross Canal Blvd. It's typically not loud on that side of Canal Blvd. if you're worried about that.

The Embassy is close to the race HQ, but there's not much else down that way and more to do around Hilton IMO since you have canal and the FQ right by you. I typically don't feel that safe at night when walking back from the FQ to the Convention Center area, and I've lived down there my whole life. But that's my opinion too.

Plus you can stumble back from Bourbon St after the race Sunday night!!!

FWIW, the Embassy Suites is about 10 blocks from the FQ in the Warehouse District. It is located on the NE corner of Julia and S. Peters, two blocks from the Convention Center. It is a long walk to the nearest point in the FQ. It's still several blocks into the FQ to find anything fun to do.
However, there are several excellent restaurants in the area around the Embassy and quite a few nice art galleries and shops.
    I suppose it's a moot point as terencejk05 has made a decision.

I'm from the area, the convention center is by no means 2 blocks from th FQ. The Hilton is two blocks from the FQ.

I think that's about right. Changing the run course probably accounts for most of the drop in registrations with the bad juju from swim cancellations not helping either. Hopefully, since WTC listens with their wallet that they now understand that moving the run course out of the FQ was a dumb move. I would not have registered for the race had the run course change been announced before I registered.

    That's crazy that entries went from 3,000 to 1,200. That's a 60% drop-off!

If the run is part of the problem, the race organizers are crazy not to change it back to how it was.

Amazing. Although I won't mind having a lot less people on the course.

And yet...I think I might sign up last minute and go. With a $199 price, no chance of selling out, and only 2 hours from my house, its better than some local races.

I never thought I'd say this, but the fact that I can avoid the Quarter altogether makes it an even more enticing option.

Anyone have any (other) advice on the race? I heard the bike is pretty flat, but windy. And the run can get hot.

This is my 1st Tri since IMKY 2010, so I'm probably going to be a little rusty.

I swam in the Lake yesterday with a full sleeved suit at 8 a.m. While the sleeves were not needed, I was not hot. I took my suit off in the water as well and was fine with nothing but tri shorts on.

As a reminder, make sure you have tinted and non tinted goggles for race day. If the sun is out, you are swimming east since the swim is back to a point to point.

Temps on the swim course have been around 74-75 degrees. I would expect that it cooled off a little with the down our we had that last few days though. I am betting on 76-77 degrees for the race if we get enough sun before the race.

That sounds like a good temp to me! I have been hoping for non wetsuit so hopefully it'll get above that 76.1 mark. Or I guess I should probably hope for 80's since I have heard they sometimes like to take water temps in "specific" locations to keep it wetsuit legal.

Edit: Thanks for the link too. I have been looking online for an accurate temp reading but was not sure which beach to look at and what site was best.

That sensor has been bad for several weeks. The lake temp at swim time will be hovering around wetsuit legal. The Save Our Lake link posted above is more accurate.

I am not sure were lumocon take the measurement but the coordinates that are listed are not in the lake.
    (30° 18.894' N, 90° 16.831' W)
That is on the northshore though and if it is near any river it could be accurate in that spot.

PaintIt - Thanks! I was given that link a few years ago and told the buoy was located in the lake just outside of the municipal yacht harbor. I didn't check the coordinates then, so they may have changed,...or not. :-) However, the water temp reading hasn't changed in a number of weeks, not even a little, so I suspect it's busted. Anyway, I'm not using it anymore based on those coords.

The 70.3 swim was cancelled due to rough water conditions and 5150 was cause of bacteria . Now lake P is one of the dirtiest around. I hope you get your swim in.

74-75 is pretty high. I'm assuming the race will still be wet-suit legal though.

It always takes me a few swims to get used to my wetsuit. I live in Chicago, so dont really want to practice in 40 degree Lake Michigan. Thoughts on just doing the swim sans-wetsuit? No idea what the conditions are like. I know wetsuits help, but I haven't put one on in like 2 years (last Tri was IMKY which is non-wetsuit). So dont want my 1st time wearing it to be during the race.

Also, is there a practice swim on Fri or Sat?

Shouldn't be a problem swimming with no wetsuit. A friend has done it twice. People are swimming in the lake right now without.
No formal practice swim, but a lot of people go to the lake front on Fri/Sat for a swim. Most go to the spot on Lakeshore Dr. where the locals swim. It's a few miles west of the race venue, on the west side of Bayou St. John. Drive by after 3 on Fri or after daybreak on Sat. can't miss it, there will be a number of people out there.

Yeah I'm still debating whether or not I want to wear my wetsuit or swimskin. I want to wear the swimskin to get a good swim in before Texas but I really do not like the idea of giving a few minutes away by wearing one. So I am hoping it's a non wetsuit swim so I don't have to worry about it! Or that my coach makes me not wear it. I know the race "doesn't matter" for me for placing because I will not be racing the 70.3 WC anyway but still, I'm too damn competitive! Haha

I'm starting to worry about this year too. I was trying to be optimistic and was going to register tonight, but currently, Saturday night is showing 18mph winds with 26mph gusts into Sunday morning. Even the race director confirmed that anything over 15mph would likely cancel the swim.

I'll gamble and wait until Saturday. I'll pay the additional fee for late registration if it means guaranteeing that I get to swim.

Does anyone else share the same thought that if the swim gets cancelled again this year on top of moving the finish line from Jackson Square that this race is just doomed? Obviously registration is down considerably if slots are still open the day before the race.

This race just has zero attraction for me and grew up outside of NOLA. No swim, kind of boring bike, and now a crappy finish line experience? I hate to see it go away, but at what point does WTC pull the plug?

I will not be doing this event again (and I haven't even done it yet). I'm still fuming about the run course change and now having to worry about the swim being cancelled in what appears to be nearly perfect weather except for a little bit of wind. Ridiculous.

That lake is so fickle and can whip up or change in mere minutes- I can't see them making a decision before race morning. The swim went back to shoreline hugging course so perhaps that will help in the decision making process. Athletes can self rescue by swimming to sea wall (barnacles and sharp shells are the only hazard there).
I hope it goes as planned, it really is a cool city to have a race in, just very difficult for many, many reasons.

I'm looking at the Accuweather detailed forecast for Saturday night. Last year they made the call at about 5am (or at least had made the call when I got to transition around that time).

Right now, Saturday night forecast is this...

    • NNW at 22 mph
    • Gusts: 39 mph

Mostly cloudy and windy with thunderstorms
    • Max UV Index: N/A
    • Thunderstorm Probability: 60%
    • Amount of Precipitation: 0.74 in
    • Amount of Rain: 0.74 in
    • Amount of Snow: 0.0 in
    • Amount of Ice: 0.00 in
    • Hours of Precipitation: 5 hrs
    • Hours of Rain: 5 hrs
Those are almost the exact same conditions as last year, 23mph winds with 40mph gusts last year and the swim was cancelled. Though you are right, Sunday looks perfect, but that was the same thing that happened last year, by 9am the water was calm, the winds were beginning to subside and it was a gorgeous day. Sadly, the race doesn't start at 9am.

First, this race won't be off the books if the swim gets cancelled this year. Bill Burke just struck an agreement with the levee board that all future races out there (including the upcoming 5150) will be moved to the harbor for the old casino and will be protected swims. This is the last time we'll have to worry about this.

I posted this on BT if anyone is interested:

hey all - I swam the course on Sunday and I'd like to offer a few opinions.
First, if you plan on swimming te course before the race, I'd head to UNO before you start swimming to see the swim exit point and make sure UNO security will let you access the beach. A kid died in the water out there last week, with the combined attention because of the NAVY facilities located in UNO's Research Park, security can get tight. We swm there and they told us to swim back.
Anothe reason to know the exit point is because there are a few rock jetties you will have to swim around on race day so you'll need to know where to turn. if you would like to swim the course (or most of it) and UNO Security will not let you access their beaches, you can exit just before UNO by walking up the sea wall. Use caution as it might have barnicles and might be slippery. Or, just swim towards the roch jetties, turn around when you hit UNO and swim back. It's probably just over a mile.
For the start, it will be a"deep water" start. Unlike 2009, I was not able to stand up once I was in the water. Although, with a wetsuit, treading water is very easy. The water felt mid to upper 70's to me, but with even a slight wind, I'd bet my bike Bille Burke makes sure the race is wetsuit legal for safety reasons. He'll find a place to measure the temp where it will be legal.
Now, tips on the course. You'll have to swim a few hundred yards northwest before making a turn to the east and swimming before UNO. The sea wall will twist and turn, ignore the sea wall. As you turn to the east look for an air tower from the Lakefront airport and keep that airport just off your right shoulder. The wall will be closer to you at times and further at others and some people will follow the wall, just swim towards that tower.
As you know I mentioned the rock jetties earlier, your right turn (swim exit) to the beach will be beyond the furthest jetty/pier so make sure that pier and the tower stays to the right.
Also remember, you will be swimming directly into a rising sun, so at least bring tinted goggles to make the decision on race day whether or not you will wear the, but unless there is no sun, I advise wearing them.
With a north wind, there will be a chop, there's just no way around it. Don't fight it, swim with it, relax, stay calm and try your best to concentrate on your form.

Weatherunderground has the conditions at 6 am on sunday as 60 degrees,, wind out of the north at 21 mph. If that is accuarate, it would almost EXACTLY mirror the conditions last year which was not even CLOSE to swimable. The couldn't even get the boats out to set the buoys, much less have kayakers etc out there. Thank goodness I already have my race after Hawaii lastyear already in the bag to validate my Legacy Slot to Kona :)

I thought one of the reasons they changed the swim course was to make sure the wind is less likely to cause a cancellation?

I am looking forward to this race, no matter what happens on race day. Its in a fun city that I can make a little vacation out of, no need to stress over wind direction, water temps and running through Jackson Square. The major problem is the wind is from the north which means it will be blowing the total width of the lake right into us on the south shore. If it was from the south it would probably be better. Ah, no swim just makes it faster to the Hurricanes, :)

I like your attitude. The swim is probably my strongest of the three, but if it's cancelled, there's obviously nothing we can do about it.

I'd just rather know sooner, rather than later. I'm planning on getting a swim in on Friday or Saturday, and don't want to waste my time if it may be cancelled.

I'm driving down tomorrow from Chicago. Making a vacation out of it as well. Looking forward to seeing New Orleans!

If you want to skip the "old" restaurants like Arnauds and Antoines which have been around for ever, the best two restaurants IMHO at Bayona and Restaurant August. Much better than the cookie cutters restaurants like those owned my Emiril.

I second Bayona, one of my favorites. Irenes is awesome also.

I think that one of the reasons for changing the swim back to point to point is that you really only need one bouy at the end of the course. The seawall will take you where you need to go. So I think that this would possibly allow for rougher water before cancel the swim.

It is nasty today with winds out of the north and huge gusts. The Lakefront will be a mess tomorrow.

Best case would be to get a wind out of the south or even better for the swim would be from the SW since you will be headed west. Very often the wind at the lake comes out of the south in the morning and flips around as it warms up.

    Muriel's for dinner

    Johnny's Po'Boys for lunch

    Gazebo Cafe for Bloody Mary's

Croissant D'or (on Ursulines) for breakfast

Other good restaurants: Mulate's (lunch), Napoleon House (to get a Pimm's Cup), MiLa (dinner), GW Fins (dinner).

Decent entertainment/bars: Cafe Biegnet on Bourbon Street (Steamboat Willy music nightly), Irvin Mayfield's Jazz Playhouse (on Bourbon, across the street from Steamboat Willy), Bombay Club martini bar, Sazerac Bar (in the Roosevelt Hotel), anything along Frenchman Street...

Btw, anyone who complains about the Nola 70.3 doesn't know what the F they are talking about. I've raced all over the united states and this has the best crowd. As good as kona. The biggest offenders with complaining are the locals who don't know how crappy racing in many other locations is. Go try the Austin 70.3 and then complain to me about an ugly course with no crowd. Heck, zero races in dc have crowds, save for moms and dads or accidental tourists. And the dc courses end up being so technical if the visit the Mall that they are dangerous! Nola 70.3 is definitely as good as any other race. And frankly, ending the race in the FQ is lame. Go run around there on your own time. Ending in City Park is much better. Rant over.

I'm sure there are touristy things to do, but I guess I've never really done them. If the weather is nice just take a street car down St. Charles to Audubon Park and back. Maybe one night do something cheesy like a voodoo tour. That would be fun I think. The WWII museum is good. Most people just wander around the french quarter, have a beignet, maybe some pralines.

But you will probably do what most people do in NOLA, eat and drink. There are so many places to do that, where would I start. There are the classics, Galatoires and Commander's Palace, which everyone should probably do once. Then there are the new crop of modern NOLA chefs like John Besh at August/Luke/Domenica/Borgne/Provence or Susan Spicer at Bayona/Mondo or even Cochon. Finally, you have the sort of hipper places that are kind of rustic chic like Dick and Jenny's, Sylvain, or Elizabeth's. If I have just one day, I probably go to Elizabeth's for breakfast (who can pass praline bacon?), then on to Cochon for lunch, and finally dinner at Bayona or Stella!

And those would just be my favorites for nice meals, arguing over the best poboy or muffaletta is like picking your favorite Chicago pizza place.

Personally, I'm swinging in Saturday (if I come) and I'm meeting friends at Domenica for some house made pasta carbo loading.

I will throw a vote in for Borgne. A friend of mine opened it with Besh and it is awesome. If you get there for lunch the specials are pretty damn affordable as well.

    My wife loves Bayona.

If you are looking for something a little out of the way and not fancy, the best sandwich I have had in town lately is at Parkway Bakery (http://www.parkwaypoorboys.com/). Menu and address is online.

thats all fine and dandy that Ol' Bill has decided to act a year later, but its too late......this race WILL be off the books if the swim is cancelled this year.....it might be scheduled, but #s will be crap. They are already suffering this year........logistically is has been abysmal. I can handle high winds on the bike.......thats just the way it is.....but to have the swim cancelled 2 years in a row without having a back up plan after last year.....KNOWING how the weather gets down here in April......well.....its pretty stupid & I won't be heading back there again regardless after 2 straight years of this.

Its not that the swim gets called off, its the fact that his arroganceand the lack of a back up plans really bother people. I believe that one of his responses to a aid station issue was "athletes are responsiblefor hydration/dehydration" rather than owning up to the fact that there was a major planning mistake.

It seems pretty certain it is going to be canceled (see article below). The shame of it is the lake has been perfectly swimmable very other weekend this spring. Also, from what I understand Bill Burke just got the race back from Ironman this year and the permits required to move the swim to the protected harbor (where it will be next year) could not be obtained in time. It is plain bad luck this has happened the last two years and to the 5150. I live here and it is extremely rare to have conditions like these and to have it two years in a row ludicrously unlucky. The bike is also likely to be somewhat altered in length due to all of the debris on Lakeshore Drive caused by this weather (another very rare occurrence). I know it is easy to dismiss the conditions/plans as a consequence of poor planning but the facts just don't seem to support the conclusion. And no, having the swim canceled twice should not be seen as stronger evidence than the ACTUAL (vs. perceived) historical weather data and attempts by Burke to solve the problem. Good luck in whatever race they are able to put on Sunday.

Strong winds and heavy rains have affected the Lakefront course for Sunday’s Ochsner Ironman New Orleans 70.3, and with additional foul weather expected to move through the area this weekend, race organizers are working to develop a modified course.

The Times-Picayune archiveAndy Potts from Colorado Springs, Co., won the Ochsner Ironman 70.3 New Orleans in 2010. The course for this year's race could be altered because of the weather.
“There’s a strong possibility of an altered course,” race director Bill Burke said Wednesday. “A front is coming through at the right time to interfere with setting up the course — getting the buoys set. It’s just bad luck.”
The Ironman 70.3 consists of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1-mile run. The swim in Lake Pontchartrain is in jeopardy. Burke said it would be unsafe to swim with winds exceeding 15 mph Sunday, and he is investigating the feasibility of relocating to an area where conditions will not endanger the swimmers.
“The safety of the competitors is first and foremost,” he said. “We are looking at every possible option to do some sort of abbreviated swim-bike-run, but I don’t know if that is possible. If not, I would probably do a run-bike-run.”
Recent heavy rains have caused flooding on segments of the bike course on Lakeshore Drive, and with the probability of more rain Saturday, it is likely that the bike course also will be altered, according to Burke.
Burke said he is working with city officials and intends to notify competitors of any changes as soon as possible

It kinda sucks if they can't find a way to have the swim. I'm coming from Chicago and I added this race late to use as a prep for IM Texas. Luckily I had airline miles and my sister lives there so the only thing I paid for was the race. But I really wanted to get an open water swim race in befor Texas to work on some tactics. I'm keeping my fingers crossed the figure a new swim venue out or the weather blows over.

Well, that makes my practice race at Republic of Texas last weekend more accurate practice, I suppose. ;) Swim was cancelled due to 25-30 mph winds (the water truly looked bad). Bike was into a crazy headwind, and back with a killer tailwind. Same with the run.
So...we'll see what the weekend has in store! If nothing else, I'm getting some damn crawfish.

Yeah, I'm about the same distance away in Houston. I feel the same way. It's not worth the time, effort and money to do a shortened race or duathlon. What a bummer. Just checked the host hotel's cancellation policy and it looks like we needed to cancel yesterday or incur a penalty. So it looks like another $200 in addition to the race fee are going down the shitter.

In the article, the RD says its just "bad luck." Is it? In 2010 the swim was rough and in 2011 the swim was cancelled, what was the expectation for 2012. That doesn't seem like bad luck, that seems like bad planning.

Sorry, I'm just venting, I want to race a 70.3, not a duathlon, a brick, or some modified s/b/r.

"Race management is closely monitoring the wind conditions forecast for race day, and considering all options. When we have a clearer understanding of the implications of the weather on the race, we will get that information to you ASAP via email within the next 24 hours. Stay tuned." -Bill Burke, Race Director

It's two days before the race and you are now considering all options? PLAN AHEAD FOR POSSIBLE CONDITIONS. It's not like thunderstorms in the spring are rare in south Louisiana. The "bad luck" card worked last year. Us triathletes are a forgiving bunch. We all make a mistake or two on race day, but you damn well know we don't do it again the following race. This cheese dick is running a shit show and we are all in for a ride.

Last year when the 5150 in New Orleans was modified to a duathlon they still counted the race toward 1) HyVee 5150 Champ and 2) USAT AG Nationals. Don't know if that would also apply to Vegas at 70.3 but I feel like that's a real possibility. May the odds be ever in your favor!!

PS - for those looking to go to a traditional NOLA restaurant, pack a coat. Places like Galatoire's and Commander's Palace require fancy dress (even if thrown on over spandex.... but please, for everyone's sake, don't.)

PPS - if you go to Commander's Palace, get a sazerac or bloody mary and then the bread pudding for dessert. Mmmmmm

There's already precedent for this since the 70.3 was a duathlon last year. Vegas slots were still allocated.

We're all irritated because the 2010 swim was a cluster*ck and probably should've been cancelled because of the winds. The 2011 swim was cancelled because of the winds. The 2011 5150 swim was cancelled because of the winds. This year's swim is in serious jeopardy because of, you guessed it, the winds. They're literally letting lightning strike four times in a row before doing something about it. Shame on us for continuing to register for this race but how many times do they have to play Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun before moving the venue? I guess the answer is next year but it should have been this year. There have been a series of very questionable decisions since this time last year as they relate to this race.

    In summary...
    1. Swim snafus in 2010 and twice in 2011 mean you find a new place to swim for 2012. Period. End of discussion.
    2. Making the dumbass decision to combine the 70.3 and 5150 and altering the run course away from the FQ.
    3. Realizing it was a dumbass decision to combine the 70.3 and 5150 and reversing that decision.
    4. Changing the run course again and removing the finish in the FQ... again. That's the one really unique part of this race.
    5. Scheduling a race at the exact same location as an air show that was expected to attract 40,000 people and upon realizing the issue sending us a bunch of emails telling us that parking and traffic aren't going to be too bad. Really???
    6. Mother Nature playing the karma card on everyone for not changing the swim venue.

    Did I forget anything?

Got to Nola this afternoon. Have seen a few other people doimg the race. Everyone is in the same mindset that the swim will be cancelled. I actually hope it is. If they allow the swim to happen and someone gets hurt, this will be the end of Nola 70.3 forever.

Also heard they just found a body in the lake today. That doesnt help anything.

I drove 15 hours from Chicago for this race. Just hopingnthe race director makes a smart decision. Either way, im here and ready for any scenario.

"Hoping" the swim is cancelled is lame. People get hurt in every triathlon and those races still exist. If you can swim it, you should want the swim to happen.

I use http://www.wunderground.com as my most trusted and accurate site. Since Tue alone the high temp has gone from 72 to 79 for Sun and the winds have gone from 20-25 all day to a max of 16mph mph winds. Making a choice on the race in 24 hrs is stupid by the RD.

Yeah I am LOVING the changes that the site has made. I hope the swim goes on and like you said if someone gets hurt so be it. Someone will always be hurt in the swim, but at least it's not mass start. I am heading there tomorrow evening from Chicago so I really do not want to go for a damn duathlon or something like that. Let us swim!!!

First, the saturday night forecast is much more relevant than the sunday forecast. Early morning is when they set the course.

Next, no one considers what it means if that person injured or killed is their family member. I guarantee all you 45yr old AG males who are bitching about no swim would change your tune if your 18yr old daughter was swimming out there. A serious injury or death means a lot more than a lost race, especially to the person who is in charge of making that decision to have the swim or not.

Last, prepare for a swim. You will have plenty of time to prepare for whatever call is made. That being said, I am quite surprised and disappointed that WTC doesn't have a standardized contingency plan. ITU has it, so why not WTC?

Good luck to and safe racing to all.

I hope my comment didn't come across like I was saying it doesn't matter if someone gets injured. By hurt I mean some people will Lays have trouble sighting and get knocked around but by no means was I saying it was ok for someone to get "injured". Hurt is something that always happens during the swim. But I would not anyone to get injured. Hope that makes sense and makes me sound like less of an ass!

I wonder what the DNS rate is going to be for this race? 25-30%???

400 DNS would be brutal. The RD still has not sent out an email to all athletes about the changes to the swim and run course. The lack of communication from the staff on this event shows the level of disorganization and mismanagement. Sending out a mass email is quite simple. I hope WTC notices this and takes action next year for the sake of this race.

Every race has a near 10% DNS rate no matter what so with all the issues I wouldn't be surprised if the number was close to 30%.

Has anyone cancelled their reservations at the host hotel? I'm getting close to pulling the plug and wanted to know what the cancellation penalty will be. I saw we needed to cancel on the 17th or before without penalty.

He was being facetious. That stated, WTC is going to struggle mightily to get people to register for this race in the future even with the proposed venue change away from Pontchartrain next year. They took about a 40% hit this year and it would probably be a similar hit next year. I don't think WTC considers a 70.3 race with a few hundred people to be a success.

I didnt register for NOLA but are they thinking of cancelling the swim due to wind or bacteria? Heard they went back to the point to point swim. Dont understand why they cant just let you guys swim along the wall, even make it a shorter swim by a few hundred yards. If someone gets into trouble you have the wall and you have many more boats within close proximity of the swimmers.

The issue is the race is held on the southsore of a very large lake. So, when winds come from the north, it causes white caps/waves on the southshore, while the northshore is calm as can be (protected by the shore). With seas that can easily be 3+ feet, they cannot launch the appropriate safety vehicles and have the safety precautions they want.

And even though they may say to swim along the wall, there will be plenty of people (myself included) who say screw the wall, I am sighting off of the point where I need to turn and swim tangents, not swim with the wall. I swam the course a few times (as recent as last Sunday) and sometimes I was 10 yards from the wall, others I was over 100 yards.

The swim course is measured in tangents, so, moving the bouys in accodance with the wall would lengthen the course pretty dramtaically. So, rather than doing that (and having the chance the people get slammed into a cement sea wall,) they are moving the swim altogether.

Since your post, they have sent out emails and posted the info on facebook. You eluding to the lack of efforts in getting information out is not valid, but you just want to complain, so you'll find somethign to gripe at either way.

Just out of race briefing. Swim moved...triangular course (different from the course change email). If we can swim, we do
1.2 miles, with potential for shorter swim of 850m. If there is a swim, and people are not comfortable with the water, they may opt out, starting later, with no eligibility for awards or Vegas slots. If no swim, then a 2 mile run first.
Then, onto the 52 mile bike and 13.1 mile run per the course change email.
The debris in question on Lakeshore is stuff that has blown up there from a recent storm, and anticipated debris from the front that is supposed to come through tomorrow. I'm fine personally with being safe as opposed to dodging tree branches, etc.

Anyone know how many people signed up for the race? It will be interesting to see what percent dont start.

I went to Bama and live in New Orleans but have been to nearly all the SEC campuses (including A&M and Mizzou). Most of the SEC campuses look as good as LSU I think. I would note the exceptions of Tennessee, Vandy, and Mizzou, they are pretty plain in my opinion; but for sure Bama, Kentucky, Auburn, A&M, Florida, Ole Miss, Miss State, and others are incredibly beautiful places (on campus). Once you leave the campuses though, most of the are pretty blah (though Oxford is a pretty charming town). Still haven't made it to UGA, Carolina, Arkansas, but I hear that all three of those are nice as well.

You are correct. I did not go to the website, or their facebook page, or anywhere and check for updates. I just checked this thread and saw the info posted here.

I think by saying "The lack of communication from the staff on this event shows the level of disorganization and mismanagement" I bypassed the eluding and went strait for calling it as it is. I believe "lack of communication" and "lack of efforts in getting the information out" convey the same message. I was not trying to beat around the bush, and I'm not sure where you picked up on that from.

You just do not understand what my gripe is. Its not just the bad weather course changes, or the change in the finish location, or the change in race fee structure, or combining the 70.3 with the 5150 and then reversing the decision. It is all of them and the LACK OF COMMUNICATION when these events occur. Things change when you plan large scale events. I understand this, but damn just let the people who will be effected by it know. Don't let us find out by checking the local paper on the web, or on a forum. That makes it seem like purposeful deceit.

I hardly think that everyone in this race checks the race web page or the race facebook page (which I did not know existed) more than once a week. Important information ,or any change in what has previously been stated really, should be sent out directly to the registered participants. Leaving it up to everyone to just figure it out on their own is not an effective form of communication.

I went to the 3 pm meeting. The guy said if 1.2 miles ( which, frankly, I doubt we will do), then the swim was to be triangular, different from the rectangle they sent out as the revision. If a shorter swim, they would just cut across the apex of the triangle to shorten the course.

Why don't they just make it a two loop swim if they think it's okay for us to do one loop (b/c we are in closer proximity to safety personel and the shoreline), then they can send us for another loop.

Thinking that the wave starts could make two loops an impossibility.

I hope we swim, but see it as a virtual impossibility with a wind advisory issued from the National Weather Service.

Whatever they do, I hope they do it tomorrow, so we can prepare.

    SWIM CANCELLED DUE TO WINDS

    Athletes:

Due to forecasted high winds and a wind advisory, the swim portion of the 2012 Ochsner Ironman 70.3 New Orleans has been officially cancelled. It will be replaced with a 2-mile run that wil begin at 7 a.m. in front of the UNO Research and Technology Park.

Because of weather concerns today, Saturday, April 21, and expected high winds this evening, bike check-in will close at 7 p.m. today and is now optional. Bike check-in will resume at 4:30 a.m. tomorrow, race morning, and will continue until 6 a.m.

Thank you for you cooperation. We will continue to keep you posted with further updates.

In this case and location I understand it. If you're not from the area and don't know about the lake, it's not exactly a "lake". It's more like an ocean. Any amount of wind from the north and the area where this swim is located is like a washing machine. It doesn't take much wind at all. It's just a bad and very unprotected site.

I'm more embarrassed for the total train wreck and the reputation this race is becoming. It had so much promise the first year it was run, but since then it's just been issue after issue (and the same repeated issues at that).

I am from NOLA, I understand the lake well. What I don't get is how we have races all the time in the ocean and the gulf.

Surely the norm in those locations is similar to poor conditions in the lake.

I to am from NOLA and the issue with the lake is due to the seawall and the shallow water (12' - 15' ) in the area of the swim. In ocean and deep lakes you would have rollers but due to the shallow water of the lake we get chop that does not have direction once the winds get high enough and it starts bouning back off the wall. If we had 4 foot rollers the boat, boards and kayaks could handle it but 3'-4' foot chop is not possible.

It is a shame that we have had the most perfect week of weather of the year and then the day before the race it turns to shit.

I am fortunate enough to have race the first two year and was able to swim. I was excited to see the point to point this year as it was much better not having a bunch of swim buoys.

Will be interesting to see how the protected harbors swim course pans out next year. No doubt some people will not come back but if you have spent the last week visiting NOLA and did'nt have a great time you have other issues.

That is not the issue. Drive across the causeway and look at the water even in the middle of the lake. Granted that is not all that deep even in tthe middle, but when there is a north wind, it has nothing to do with the seawall. Fortunately as a NO resident I raced galveston this year for this reason.

I drive the causeway every day to work and the shallow water is the # one issue. agreed that it is rough even in the middle of the lake.

The seawall compounds the problems close to the wall where the swim occurs.

regardless of the physics behind the chop it is much different than deep water lake and the ocean.

Even with the venue change next year this race is going to struggle in the future. There were 500 less registrants this year than in 2011 when the number was approx. 2100.

I watched part of this event today and actually understood the swim cancellation and shortened bike course for safety. However, I am glad I picked Gulf Coast Tri instead of this 70.3. Between my parking spot and the .75 miles or so to transition, I saw at least 4 athletes take really bad falls off their bikes due to the horrible roads (one male was taken away in an ambulance and a female had her back wheel and tire completely come off her bike). I feel the poor quality road surface was a HUGE disservice to the athletes who raced. After seeing those falls, I'll never race NOLA 70.3, even with family in New Orleans!

Since I'm in Houston I love that there's another 70.3 race in the spring in a fun city that's only 5-6 hours away. It makes for having good options.

I thought about registering for NOLA in 2011 but was a little skittish after hearing how badly the swim went in 2010. I'm not scared for my own personal safety, just scared the swim could be cancelled. So I didn't register and it was a good thing since the swim was cancelled. I figured I'd register for 2012 since what were the odds the swim would be cancelled again??? You figure that after 2010, 2011 and the 2011 5150 race that surely they couldn't have issues 4x in a row. Right? Right? We see how that went.

I know they're supposedly changing the venue for next year. It might be a case of too little too late. This race now has a horrible reputation. Registrations really dipped this year and the DNS rate was absurdly high. They're going to have to do a lot to get people to comeback to this race. Burke and PEM did a really lousy job running this race in the last year. We can gripe about the constant run course changes, scheduling the 5150 on the same day or not, the air show, etc. but those are minor inconveniences. The real issue they should have concentrated on was the swim venue. The swim venue should have been moved this year. Instead they decided to play Russian Roulette with the weather again and it bit them in the ass. We will hear the rallying cry about how the NOLA 70.3 will re-invent itself at a new location but it's going to be a struggle to bring a lot of us back to race.

In no way possible could that be the fault of bad roads. I've done this race 3 years, grew up there and still go to NOLA relatively frequently and yes, the roads are awful. But the roads on the race course are not THAT bad except for right out of transition and out to Haynes blvd.

Yeah, the rough roads aren't the problem, I hit a seam last year and lost a bottle. Luckily I wasn't alone, it was a bottle graveyard at that spot.

This shouldn't be surprising, and since it is a known problem I'd suggest that people need to be warned at the pre-race, and the bad spots should be coned off or volunteers there to steer people away. Sounds like a poorly run race to me.....

We don't need to have our legs sawed off at the start of these races to prove what studs we are. Keep 'em safe and alive to come back again.

    Just my humble opinion.

I know that spot well, it coincides with probably the max speed of the whole course too, I think I was approaching that spot at around 34 mph last year (coming down the seabrook bridge). I knew the area enough to slow down some and brace myself for that spot, though it broke my heart to bleed off that speed.

Yes there are some seams out there and a couple of tricky spots, but not much more or less than any race I've done. It would be nice if we could have had fresh asphalt for entire bike course like on that short section of the Chef, but I did not think the road was that big of an issue.

I'll write mine up within the next couple of days and get it out. The roads were bad at some points but I thought really good at most. The wind and the 2 mile run created a clusterf*ck of people at the start of the bike and since it was only one lane and people were all over the road it was tough to pass. I'll post my full report when i write it up. Back to reality now.

The seams in the concrete were not bad unless you were one of the athletes that crashed because of them (including me). I went down early in the race and saw three others down as well. I understand we all rode the same course, I just wish they would have been marked so we would have seen them coming. Once you got out of the neighborhood the roads were better but all the riders I saw down were all within a few blocks of each other.

2012 NOLA WTC Duathlon Race Report:

    Saturday:
Checked in on Saturday afternoon at the host hotel. Picked up swag bag and was routed through the expo. Standard issue race stuff, and a commemorative swim cap! Went to pre-race briefing. I honestly wish I would have recorded it so everyone could grasp how little information was given. Odd part of it though they mentioned having a swim next year at some new place? Wouldn't that take away from the awesome duathlon they host for all of the non-swimmers?

Checked in bike on Saturday, checked out transition area. Not bad, good set up with lots of room. Only about three bikes on my rack so I had plenty of room to move around. Bike in and out roundabout was a little sketchy as well as the roads leading out of the UNO campus. There was going to be no fancy mount or dismount for me (friends said on race day some folks ate it, but maybe due to their lack of experience on dismounts or just racing I am not sure).

    Race morning:
Got to transition at around 5:30. Windy and cold outside, perfect duathlon conditions! Got gear unpacked, talked some smack to fellow racers, questioned all of the deep front and disk set ups I saw all around my rack. Stood around freezing my butt off and listened to the waves crash on the seawall.

Transition closed at "6:30" but people were in there well past 6:45. Oh well not like it was that crowded to begin with. Athletes were told to head to the traffic circle to start the first run (2 mile out and back). Pro men went off at 7am and pro women shortly after. Then they started the AG athletes at 7:15ish. Relay teams went first. I stood around freezing for seemingly forever while they sent out athletes 2 by 2.

    Race:
Started the first run, and it went well. PRed my duathlon run split. I am certain they sent us on the route over the levee to the seawall just to see how rough the lake was. It looked like a challenge for good swimmers and a death trap for non-swimmers.

Got into transition and onto the bike. Took the right out of the roundabout and got my first fun gust of wind. Nice pucker effect but manageable on race wheels. Ride was great. I enjoyed the view of the abandoned six flags, government housing, and military vehicle graveyard or whatever along the way. I saw what I think was ONE race marshal but it could have been the camera crew that was roaming around. Drafting was almost encouraged for the most part, but hey everything is legal until you get caught right? What stood out to me on the bike course was the large amount of noticeably obese individuals that were going at maybe 13-15 mph with a tail wind, and one gear away from walking with a head wind. Whatever, "on your left _____" was a common phrase I used as they rode two or three wide (they didnt know about the drafting policy for the day).

Into T2, dumped the bike and got to running. Not much to it, I enjoyed the two loop run. I might have enjoyed finishing in the French Quarter, but I will never know. Sunscreen lady made me laugh every time. The nice people on the second turnaround had some run aid where it made sense and good music. The all girls crew before and after the bike corner were always prepared. I do think some stations ran out of certain items a few times, but I can not be sure. It was nice to see my family two times on the roundabout. Finished the race. Some nice man asked if I felt ok in a serious tone. I laughed and said "no I feel like shit" and he just laughed at me and said "you should" I just laughed and stumbled away. I dont know why but that was hilarious after the race.

    Post race:
Live band playing NOLA style music, red beans and rice, jambalaya, and Abita beer. Good stuff but I couldnt stand the smell after the race so cookies and coke were lunch. Everything else was just scattered across the area and I'm not sure what else was happening.

In all I have been to races that have been less impressive, but not many. USAT Championship races that I have been in are 10X better than this event on all levels. This was my first WTC event so I have no basis of comparison to other WTC events. It just was not that impressive to me. It is definitively in the bottom 50% of the races I have been to not taking into effect the changes in race course, prices, and weather related issues.

Maybe I had high expectations, or maybe it was something else...

Sorry to hear that anybody crashed.

I wish I would have filmed the bikes coming out of T1 and around the corner onto lakeshore blvd. The bike exit was a straight shot for about 150 feet and then it turned 2 lanes wide 90 deg to the right. I cant even count how many people were trying to get into shoes around and after the corner. most were going so slow by the time
they got the shoes on it was pointless. Maybe it was as pointless as it usually is for most age groupers. Lucky I saw no wrecks in the first turn.

There are some wicked expansion joints in the traffic circle and near the Seabrook bridge but it is not that bad if you are paying attention to the road. I have been riding the race course for about 20 years as part of the local group ride and there is a wreck now and then but it is rider error most of the time. The others have been car related recently.

For those who came to NOLA I hope they had a good time despite no swimming and for those who bailed hope to see you again.

I will be be signing up for 2013 as soon as registration opens. hope to see you there.

I ran a disk at all my races last year and a few were windy. And from what I've read the deep front is what causes the handling issues. But the only time I felt a bit unstable was the downhills but that also had to do with my headset bolts coming loose and making my front end shaky.

My thoughts from NOLA 67.1 2012:

Communication: After the initial delay in communication, when the RD was telling the NOLA newspaper that the swim was in jeopardy long before he communicated any issues to the registered athletes, there were several subsequent emails keeping us updated, so that improved over the days leading into the race.

Expo: pretty good, but without a FQ finish, I'm not sure I would have planned to stay down in the FQ/CBD area again...would save a lot of money and traffic for just getting around to stay in Metairie. But I suppose for a little vacation associated with the race, having to go down to the Hilton/Riverside area is fine. It's not the only race where the expo/packet pickup is not at the same place as the actual race activities, so no big beef there.

Bike checkin: We were glad to have received the email that bike checkin was expanded to include Sunday morning due to weather concerns. Things were blowing like crazy Saturday morning, and there were thunderstorms coming through. After driving the course and doing a little run along the lake front, we were able to go relax the rest of the day and then took our bikes with the rest of our gear on Sunday morning.
Plenty of space on the bike racks....esp with at least 2 no shows on our rack.

Swim: Not too surprised about the cancellation...it was pretty dang rough looking out there. A bit ironic, since my BF and I did the Republic of Texas sprint in Corpus Christi the weekend before for our "warmup" race, and the swim was cancelled for it, too. So we're 2 for 2 of tris turned into dus this year so far. :/

First run: I think they made a reasonable effort to spread out the athletes by keeping the start within the waves, and a time trial run start to spread us out a little further. It was sort of fun, but I'm not a good runner, so running extra miles wasn't really in my plan...but made the best of it.

Bike: Course....when we drove it, I had a few thoughts. First, that it sure goes out into BFE and looked like it would be pretty boring, but I really liked it on race day. Next thought when driving it was that we ride past a fairly poor looking neighborhood on the way out, and there are some falling-down buildings on the Chef Menteur Hwy, so I felt a little guilty going out there for this fairly indulgent activity on a bike that costs more than some of these people ever see in one place. But that's just my soft side. ;) Of course, that whole demographic thing changes when you ride and run past the huge homes closer to City Park.

Driving the course, we could see that there were lots of seams in the concrete that ran parallel to the roadway, some for long sections, and a bunch of short ones that make squares around manholes. I remarked to my BF that we need to be careful, because those are wheel-eating cracks/seams for sure. I saw two people who had crashed (medical was on the way for each, I was told), and multiple people walking back on the first outbound section on Leon Simon/Haynes. By driving the course, we were able to scope out most of the rough sections of road, but I guess I didn't notice the one on Leon Simon Blvd just before the turn onto Elysian Fields at the very end of the bike course. They had a volunteer there, but his warning of rough road was a little too late, as I hit it just as he was shouting "rough road on the right"....either he should have been stationed a little further up the road, or there could have been a couple of cones to push us to the left. I hit the rough part and sort of swerved left with many apologies to get out of that section. My BF's dad said he saw about 4 crashes coming into T2.

I actually had a pretty good bike for me, in spite of the wind. I found the wind to be the worst on the outbound section going out Leon Simon and Haynes, more likely because it was more a crosswind with some gusts and a little twitchy where we were exposed to the wind. Got blown around a bit going over the overpass and Seabrook Bridge. I understand they couldn't carpet the grated part of the Seabrook bridge because of the wind...no problem if you just rode straight.

Saw some drafting...no huge packs, but a few pairs and small packs. In opposition to another poster on this thread, I saw motorcycles with officials at least 7 or 8 times during the bike course. I was a little annoyed by some of the drafting pairs.....men, if you are drafting off of a girl (saw this a few times), then your man card should be turned in. Bad enough you're cheating, but you suck so bad you have to draft a girl? One dick passed me on the right when there was a completely clear lane on my left....just being a dick, I'm sure. And one guy who just had to pass only inches from me on my left (also with a whole clear lane available), which reminded me of the IMF thread from last year with the guy who caused a crash by doing that.

Aid stations on the bike...seemed to be well stocked and not running out of water like the first year. Main complaint here....the info provided at the race meeting with the graphic of the revised bike course indicated aid at miles 11, 26, and 41. The aid stations were really at about miles 17, 30, and 41. The spacing was fine, and they were well stocked, but really, RDs...it is not that hard to give athletes the accurate mileage for where these things will be. Either that or give us a generic statement that aid stations will be every 10-15 miles.

Run: In spite of my implosion on the run that turned into a death march, I really enjoyed the run course. I liked the two loop format, and the layout allowed me to break it into little sections to mentally push through it. Aid stations were great! Only beef is that my poor knees and feet do not like running on concrete. I don't know if I just need to strap little pillows onto my feet or what, but it just hurts me. I would convince myself when we ran from a concrete section to an asphalt section that it was going to be soft, just to make it feel a little better. Good spectators, shade in some sections. I had misgivings a few months ago when they said we would not finish in the FQ, but I liked finishing back where all my gear was.

Overall....prob would not do this again, in a BTDT frame of mind....there are certainly issues with the overall setup, but I would just warn that people go into this event in the future with open eyes and an open mind.

Just saw the email from the RD about next year. $150 is tempting especially since I live so close. One question: does anyone have any info on where they will move the swim to? I am assuming the bike and the run will move (or at least be altered) also.

At the athlete's briefing and on the morning of the race, they said they'd try switching the swim course to somewhere near the Airport (still on Lake Pontchartran). Not sure this solves the problem...but they claim it's in a more protected area.

Not really sure this persuades me to sign up for next year's. The race is just too far away, and traveling for a triathlon seems like a giant hassle (this was the first time I'd flown for a tri).

Unlike other commenters, I didn't find the race all that bad. The roads were fine; they could've been better, but they definitely could've been a lot worse. And, sure, it was boring--but I've definitely seen worse. And, one final comment, I am one of the back-of-the-packers, and I never had an issue with aid stations running out of stuff. Every time I sauntered by (I'm really that slow...no running, just sauntering, lol), they had everything I needed. I've been in plenty of other races where they've run out of stuff, so this made me happy.

Overall, on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give the race a 6 -- in light of the swim issues (given they had similar problems before) and the annoying time trial run start (it went very slowly).

Thanks, great perspective. I did Austin 70.3 last year and (except for the swim) I prefer NOLA. Austin roads were as bad if not worse (actually had 100 feet of gravel), really nothing to look at, and the run in NOLA is better (better scenery, crowd support, etc). They guy handing out crawfish cracked me up. Was very tempted to stop and have some.

From what I am told the plan is to use the harbor next to the lakefront airport. It would be on the other side ( east ) of the Seabrook bridge from where the race started.

Looks like the harbor is about 500 meters long and about 150 meters wide that would be usable swim area. I have not heard how a course might be layed out. The 5150 is supposed to move to this location so that will be the test of the new course.

Dear Ochsner IRONMAN 70.3 New Orleans Athlete,

Thank you for your patience and understanding last weekend. Having to restructure an event due to severe weather is not just disappointing to you, but to us as well. The decision, while difficult, was crucial to ensure athlete safety. We are committed to helping participants reach their goal of racing an IRONMAN 70.3 and will provide two special offers to those impacted by Sunday’s weather.

2012 participants – including relay teams - will be eligible to sign up for the 2013 Ochsner IRONMAN 70.3 New Orleans at a discounted rate of $150 dollars. We are actively working to secure a new, protected swim venue for 2013.

I am guessing either a snake swim or two loop starting at Sikorsky Drive ending at Star casino with the parking lot being T1? (or maybe a reverse of that).

This was my third time doing this race. 2009,2010 and last weekend. I had complaints in 2009,but none this year. I thought I would miss the FQ finish and I did not. I thought doing a du would suck and it did not. I loved seeing the pros up close at start. I thought the bike would suck and the course was in better shape than it was in 2010. Is it the best race ever ? no. But it is certainly not the worst by a great deal. I am trying to attach some pics from the cheap phone I carry during Triathlons that I do not care If I loose or drop.

Yeah...we're looking at the $150 offer, too. It was mainly a solid training day (or in parts, just gutting it out on the run) for us, but we enjoyed ourselves.

I actually liked the run course, and I was one of the ones who was disappointed by no FQ finish initially. Nice to be able to break up the run into the out and back segments, see my honey several times as we crossed paths, and have all our gear handy when we were done rather than have to get back out to UNO to pick it up later.

I stopped and had one crawfish on the run...my day was pretty much shot by then, so I figured, why not? :)

    The New Specialized Wind Tunnel
Will this be a game changer for Specialized, in both sales and product design, or will it not move the sales and design needle versus those in Specialized's competitive set?
    Yes, Game Changer
    Minor move forward
    Won't budge the needle
