I'll post a pic tonight but in my case everything you listed is good to go but the springs in the caliper aren't strong enough to pull the cable perfectly straight down the center of the head tube at rest. As a result the wedge actually sits closer to the drive side of the bike until I start to pull the lever, at which time it progressively moves toward the centerline as tension increases. The brake pads contact the rim at the same time and have equal spacing from the rim at rest the way I currently have it set - but there is that asymmetry in the caliper arms when looking head-on.

I think Imay have seen this. Try winding on some tension on both sides. Or wind right back and start from scratch. When wound right back, go through all the checks above.

I had this asymmetry when the adjusters were backed off a bit too far. It may be worth taking a brake block washer out on each side - especially if you've got fairly wide rims in. Worth a try if Carl's sage advice doesn't get it licked.

assuming we're talking about a 9-series bike:

pads are 420487

non-UCI basebar is 309266

UCI basebar is 427064

Speaking of front break routing. Since I installed my 100/100 stem, I have not been happy with my front brake. It stops me just fine, but it doesn't seem to release as well as I'd like.

I need to run need cables (UGH) before IMAZ - any suggestions for the front in terms of best housing or technique?

Hi Sentania (and everyone else who might be wondering about proper cable sequence),

I have changed the cables in my SCs (both of them) a few times already. Not out of necessity but more out of curiousity. I have used Shimano, Jagwire, Gore, and even Nokon. Started with the Shimano and that was ok and snappy. Then the jagwire, which was pretty much like the Shimano. Finally tried the Nokons, which proved to be the most difficult cable setup I've ever tried. I had to use two sets of brake cables, and two sets of derrailleur cables for one frame. Took be the better part of two weeks (I'm a perfectionist) to finalize the Nokon lenghts and even afterwards I wasn't happy with the lack of snappiness. The Shimanos and Jagwires were much better. But I finally settled with the Gore Ride-on cables. This thing is so slippery that there was little, if any, friction inside the cables. It also had a very soft outer housing that could easily be routed through the bars and the stem. I would recommend you try Gore.

Aside from the cables, I've also tried various stem iterations from 60/45 to 100/45 and finally to 100/10. The higher and longer your stem is the easier it is to setup up all the cables. The most challenging stem to setup up was the 100/10. Very little tolerance for error and you have to get the length of the cable sitting right on the stem / fork hole. It's sort of a matter of trial and error. I start long and slowly cut it as I progress through the install.

I still use the 100/10 stem with Gore cables and my SC brakes (both front and rear) are as snappy as my road bike brakes. No issues with imbalance or uneveness on the front brake arms. I use a liberal amount of grease on the brake arms by the way (both front and back). On the second SC, which uses a 60/45 stem, the Gore cables made a big difference as well and that setup is quite snappy too.

I'm curious if I can only use the Bontrager specific rear brake pads on the 7 series Speed Concept rear brake. If so, what is the part number for those pads. Thanks.

Carl,

I haven't been able to find the crank lengths for different frame sizes anywhere. Is it 172.5mm or 170mm for the S frame?

Re: Official Speed Concept Owners Thread [nitropowered92] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

I'm used the OEM brake pads, shimano OEM pads, bontrager cork pads, and reynolds carbon pads with no issues in all brakes in my SC 9.

The only ones I had a really hard time with was a set of bontrager cork ones that were manufactured out of spec and were a touch big.

pads themselves are not platform-specific, but the carriers (cartridges, if you prefer) are...the mounting post being slightly aft of center to eliminate interference with the chainstays. the PN for the pad cartridges is 422482.

the non-UCI 9-series bar will not fit on a 7-series bike. it's a direct-mount system utilizing the 9-series stem design rather than a round 31.8mm center section.

Sorry to ask a redundant question here, I can't seem to phrase it correctly in search to get much info. Can different extensions be used on the 9.x SC? Somewhere in the middle of this monstrous thread I remember it being said that no, just the bent Ls that came stock, will fit. Then I read elsewhere that other Bontrager brand extensions would fit like the "S" bends on their website. Since reading that I have also seen a few bikes here and there with the stock basebar running other model/brand extensions with the SC stem and basebar. Couldn't tell if those were using the custom "Tririg" clamps or not (which I now have....). So whats the reality here? Do I have any options for extensions or no without using the custom clamps? With them? Or do I just need to wait until I have the bike in hand and try some Vukas on there?

Oh yeah, my first post in the owners thread *huge smile*.

Any standard size diameter extension will work fine. I'm using Zipp Vuka s-bends but profile, Felt Devox, Hed, pretty much everything works.

I spent 20min tweaking on the cable and FINALLY got it nearly perfect. Now that I have it just where I want it I need to figure out the best way to swap my 19mm training wheel for my 808 FC CC when I race. How thick are the spacer washers? Would they happen to be 2-3mm by chance? Are the pad carriers specific to the 9 series? I'll probably get another set and swap the entire pad/carrier when I race.

Cool, thanks Carl and Joel. Must have misread or misremembered or misremembered misreading. Getting old sucks.

Oh the Zipp Vukas would do nicely, yes they would :)

pad carriers are specific to the 9-series as well as the 7-series rear brake. spacer washers stack up to 3mm. the rear pad carriers for both are are PN 422482 and the SC9 front are 422481.

I've seen a few posts on this thread about how to travel with the bike. I'm sure there's more than one way to skin that cat, but I'll say that I just packed mine into a Trico Ironcase, and it fits beautifully. There is even plenty of space to pack my tools for reassembly, water bottles, wetsuit, etc. And the case appears to be very sturdy.

BTW, FWIW, I did not have to slacken the front brake (remove the wedge) to get my aero bars flat, so anyone doing this might want to try it before pulling the wedge (not that doing so is difficult). I did have to remove the aero bars from the base bar, though (two bolts each -- no biggie).

I did follow the helpful instructions here (I did not have to remove the cranks, and the RD hanger comes off with the RD).

Thanks Carl - you should put a link in your sig to a sticky with all of the odds and ends part numbers so you don't have to keep answering the same questions :)

Because I'm going to ask another one - what is the part # for the stainless hardware kit for the stem and aerobars?

Wow I logged on here to ask that exact question. My bike just spent 2 days in the rain at the Miami 70.3 and all my hardware is rusted now. I noticed on the 2012 bikes that they have all stainless bolts so I need to upgrade!!!

Re: Official Speed Concept Owners Thread [TH3_FRB] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

(un?)fortunately, some of these things get asked and answered back-channel...so a list of PN links in my sig might end up being incomplete. nice idea though.

W308017 (stem cover bolts), W311088 (the two short rear brake cover bolts) W311089 (the longer rbr cover bolt), and 420693 (bar hardware bolt kit).

the three bolts holding the stem to the fork should not be changed to stainless, as it has reduced strength vs the grade we spec'd up there.
