Potts putting th hammer down, dropped Jacobs. Not suprising from the description of the course today. Tail current on the way out, best time to get rid of hangers on since it will get a ton easier to sit on after the turn around. Wonder is anyone if the front group will try and make a break before the head current??

Potts is about 24 flat at the 1/2 point, so not a big tail current, perhaps even a head one? that is the problem with currents under water, never know which way until you are actually swimming..

AG'ers are off exactly 30 minutes behind pros. Potts had about 1 minute exactly at turnaround, should have double that I would suspect at the finish. Time enough to settle into his own rythm on the bike and recover a bit before the group comes up. Hope he has done the training to hang with them this year, last two times out he has slipped back to 3rd group before having a great run. If he can have that same run after a lead bike finish, he could podium this thing..

Potts out in 48;40, so no current either way today. That is just about an even split out and back, as the finish leg is just a bit longer than the out leg. The times will be slow because of a little bump on the water, sometimes you just get some wind early..

Rachel Joyce out 1st on the women, Julie diebens next. 52+ swim for Rachel, another minute to Julie. Not too bad for either on a slow swim day. Men are riding really tight so far, probably letting them ride a little close until they can seperate and see who is going to ride where in the group.

First AG'er out of the water, kind of slow at about 52 flat. I guess we do not have any of the world class OW swimmers in the AG heat today. Like I said, course was about a minute slow for the leaders, so more as you swim slower, so a lot of dissappointed swimmers when they see the clock as they run out..
And Huddle was kidding on the arm warmer thing, he knows about coolers, but he has a long history of making fun of all the triathlon fashion, ever since the Euro speedo..Heard about the Underpants run?? That is Huddle...

I am currently streaming off of VLC to my PC (Windows 7 Pro) and then back out to the Playstation and to my home theater - the lag is about half a second PC to TV...it may be being recorded too...on the Playstation (modified with a 1000gig drive).
So, yes if you have the gear you can put this to your TV.

I can tell you that I will know Dick Hoyt ten times out of ten...as long as Rick is with him.

Lead group of men is huge so far. The camera just rode through them, and must be about 25 guys, but appears that all are at 10m plus. Pete Jacobs made a move to the front, and now they say Maik is about 1 minute back of the group. He had 2nd fastest bike split last year, so when he catches up it should help thin the herd. Now Ben Hoffman is making a move to the front, Crowie looks good and relaxed..
Wonder if Potts is think about the $5k prime just up the road??

They seem confused on who is leading, but it still must be Potts, Diebens just took the lead from Joyce. Miranda is really doing well for this point in the race, she had a great swim, and her position looks a lot better than last year..

It looked like there were many marshalls having chats with some of the guys. That is good to see, as it looks spread out now. I think some of those guys just get frustrated with guys passing them, then slowing sown the pace. So guys like Faris probably fight for position too long and get popped. Pete Jacobs too, he was very agressive and probably took too much time to pass that long line. You really need to stay focused and chill until it is time to make a big move. All those guys were riding agressive that got penalties...

I just heard Tyler Butterfield of Bermuda mentioned among the bike leaders. He's my darkhorse pick for today and if he stays close into T2, watch out!! Tyler is in peak form and a stellar runner - ran sub 1:08 in Texas 70.3 (ok, may have been a little short but he outran Potts by 2+ mins and Bozzone by 3+ mins).
Tyler has the pedigree as a former professional cyclist and triathlon is in his genes: his father Jim Butterfield finished IMH in 7th overall and also held the IMH run record for several years. His mother was something like a 9-time winner of Bermuda's biggest, most prominent half marathon race: the Marathon Derby.
Go Ty!!!

This coverage today is pretty good overall, and unlike last year we have not been subjected to a bunch of views of the commentators. I heard that commentary about the phantom Leito. Funny thing is that Julie is riding with some back of the pack pro men. No way the AG'ers are catching her, so if you see guys, it is pro men. That is my only complaint right now, almost half of the commentary is on athletes that they are not showing. Either they are having trouble with race numbers, or listening to someone in their ear that has no clue..

Norman could have those oversize pullys on, so it looks larger. He is hitting the climb riding hard, with Andreas Ralert and Marino Van Honaker right in tow. Funny that Marino got caught bunching up on Ralert, so he had to pass quickly to not get a penalty. Smart move, one that a lot of guys forget and get busted. Could be that is what happened to the early penalties..

ALl the guys popped were guys that rode to the front and tried to stay there, and knowing Faris and his attitude on drafting, I think it is a good bet that he failed to drop back soon enough on someone that passed and slowed down. That is the only problem with agressive front of the pack riding in the beginning, too many guys still have legs and egos to get in your way, and if you get frustrated and forget that drop back, or get squeezed into someones draft zone and forget that you now only have a few seconds to pass, then easy to get a penalty from an astute marshall..
And look how well he is riding since the penalty, he is definately strong today, at least at this point. He could also be angry and blowing himself up, we will know soon which it is.

Are you talking about the woman who missed cutoff? Yeah, if not PC then it makes you wonder what she's doing out there, 2:20 for 2.4 is a mind-sloggingly slow 3:39 min/100m pace, it seems missing the cutoff would be a blessing since she seemed in no shape to bike 112 miles.
AMEN...now, if she had one arm and one leg...or was 89 or even 69...but please.
Some dude with 1 arm did 100m free in 58secs at the commonwealth games yesterday, so I'm not sure if that's even an excuse.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears that it's significantly hotter there today than probably anytime in the last 5 years. If so, we'll see who's nailed their electrolyte maintenance. I know Crowie has (he discussed it on a podcast). This was Macca's Achilles' heel last year, so I would assume that he's worked on it too. The Uber bikers are crushing it right now (just hitting Hawi as I watch), but without a doubt, the real race will start at the 21km mark on the run.

It no hotter than normal, 101 on the road is actually low. Later on it gets to 120 just off the road..Right now it is great to see the 2 fastest bikers from last year doing a 2 man ttt(10m gap of course). This will help them both, and Maik did not have to close a big swim gap this year. If it turns out to be a fast bike day, depending on what the wind does the last 30 miles, could be close to a record if they stay teamed up.

I'm not too sure Molina will be too unhappy about that swim time. ALl the times are off today, and when I talked to him about his race this year, he said he would be conservative. He has had so many blowups in the heat there, even as an AG'er, perhaps he is trying a new stragedy. 1;01 swim today would be a medium/hard steady effort for him, setting up a bike with no energy deficit..Once all the swim times come in, I bet his is not that far back as far as the groups go. If we look at places, it may be the equilivent of a 56 or 57 last year..

8 minutes now...alot can happen, but there are alot of runners between Lieto and Crowie, it's gonna be a pretty substantial gap with alot of contenders to pass on the marathon. I'm liking Raelert at this point, though I'm real interested to see how the run focus will effect Lieto's marathon, maybe this is the year he holds off the speedsters.

They are showing Diebens now, and I have to say that she looks really good on the bike. SHe has great position and keeps her upper body still. No wonder she rides with the slower pro men. I hope she is doing a good nutrition plan, she should have a nice lead if this is a comfortable pace for her. You just never know about your 1st hawaii, could get off the bike and fold her tent, or run a great race for the win.
Macca is doing what he needs to do among the lead group, only problem are the guys in front of him that are wild cards. I know he is thinking about his 3 minute lead on Crowie right now, but could all be moot if the real race is in front of you..Ralert. Twik, and Leito will be leading this race for many more hours, just wonder if one of them has 4 more hours in them.

I think Macca is looking really good, he ran a faster mara than Raelert at Frankfurt, would like to see him gap him though before T2. Crowie needs to pus skates on, the gap is getting a little worrying to Lieto, Raelert and Macca. Feel sorry for henning, seems out of charecter.
Dibens I think will blow up, Carfrae for the win, Dibens probs for 3rd

No doubt she will increase the lead from where it is now, perhaps 12+ minutes. Either way, if she can do her run it is going to be a great race. I will predict now there will be no 2;57 from Miranda today. SHe is going to find out what running is like when you stay in the bike portion of the race, not the same coming from 30 minutes down. She should go low 3 hours, which as you say should make for a great race, as Dibens can run low 3 hours on her day too...

I do not know how fast they are to this point, but just looking at Leito and how close the others are, I would say no. When Norman set that record, I think I saw him out of the aero position for less than a couple minutes the entire ride. Leito is all over the bars right now, riding an ITU position, up on the bullhorns, and doing a lot of water cooling on the arm coolers. When you are finally all alone, these are the things that make the difference between a 4;20+ and a 4;18. I'm very excited to see what Chris has in store for his run this year. I know a lot of focus has gone to that part of his race.

No kidding. VanHoenaker as well, who ran 2:42 off the bike earlier this year. I think right now, Lieto, Raelert, Macca and VanHoenaker are in the best positions in the field. Of course, who knows much much energy they've expended to be where they are.
Another guy to watch is Tyler Butterfield - he's somewhere near the front, and ran 1:07 off the bike in a 70.3 earlier this year. I don't think he'll do anything, but it is worth the mention!
Edit - it looks like Butterfield popped.

So far t I think Macca is getting what he has earned. Every year is a new year, and the guys getting air play are serious contenders too. Remember Leito beat him last year? Well there will be no bike record today, so either the course was tough, stricter pacing, or Norman was just plain faster than all these guys. I believe it is the latter. All washed up and over the hill, old Napolean is doing well for himself today so far. It is too bad he really never learned to swim well enough to stay in the lead pack, he has to go so hard from the gate and that has to kill you later in the day...

Depends...can Lieto hold him off? Run focus this year and as others have said he looked pretty darn good getting off the bike.
Regardless, this is shaping up to be a GREAT marathon. 7:40 to make up for Macca, and it looks like it'll be 10-12 minutes for Crowie.

Boy, a long way to Bozonne, brown, and alexander. the race just rode away from those guys today, not much chance for a podium from that group today. All the guys looked good coming out of T2, looked like an ITU transition. I have never seen everyone charging like that, either a ploy to pad those first splits to scare the chasers, or they are really feelig good.

After watching the REV3 Quassy coverage earlier in the year I have to say it's amazing the difference in quality, both the commentary and the actual video.
That said, we're paying nothing for full coverage of the World Championships...that alone makes it fantastic.

a little, but I think he is staying within himself, and if I am remembering how he looked last year, his lower legs look more "supple" through the stride. I think it's a good sign, but it's early...

Can we get a camera on Lieto please?
The camera work has been 3rd rate all day. They camera following Dibens just slowed, panned, then focused on a freaking helicopter. Why?
After watching the REV3 Quassy coverage earlier in the year I have to say it's amazing the difference in quality, both the commentary and the actual video.
That said, we're paying nothing for full coverage of the World Championships...that alone makes it fantastic.
Isnt it weird though, that the freaking world championship isnt on a single tv station... kinda blows.

Dude totaly agree, I don't think at 5' Lieto Doesn't has a enough lead over Raleart and Macca. Of course his run may have improved a lot but know way Alexander is catching Macca and Raleart 10' down unless they really overpaced the bike...

Leito looked good, but it appeared Maik had a faster turnover. could have been a downhill and of course we do not know how long each stride is. Remember Bently, turnover of a miler for 26, but a really short stride.
Race for podium is over for that back group, and what a group. It could as easily be the lead 10 guys of any ironman, but today they are fighting for a low prize money payout. 16 minutes is just too much to ask on the guys on front. SOme will die of course, but to expect no one of the top 10 is going to break 3;05, and you are going to do a sub 2;50, is pretty unrealistic. Like I said that 5th to 10th is going to be the really good races besides the leaders now fighting for top 3..

Oh, absolutely...but money talks, and there aren't too many people willing to tune in to an 8+ hour triathlon, World Championships or no. What station would be willing to block off that kind of time for something that'd probably be no better than a 2 share?
Frankly, I like the setup of online coverage for the full race then a 2 hour NBC special (even if half the NBC coverage is fluff).

Every source I have been reading names Bozzone in that group with Cam Brown and Crowie but his name is never listed in the top 20... is he just running with that pack but outside the top 20, or is there something wrong with the time reporting?
For example -

Looks like Paula's old, old bike course record is plenty safe. Perhaps they need to bring back the 24" wheels??? I think it was a tough bike today, tougher than last year, which means the lead men rode harder/faster than last year. Perhaps all the great athletes waaay off the back was another indication. The race will have been won on the bike today, just a matter of who it will be?

You think that K-SWISS rep is blowing smoke or is he legit when he says pro's are switching to the Blade Light Race a week before the race? Sounds like marketing BS to me, I'd imagine if a pro wanted to give them a go they'd have had a pair a month or two ago to test out.

Hard to bet against Macca right now, but I'm gonna predict a blowup around mile 18, and Lieto for the win (though I've been rooting for him since last years effort, so there's definite bias there).

I love that about Macca as well, but I can't say he'll never 'die wondering'. Pacing is pretty damn important, if you can run 6:20's the whole way and you do the first half in 1:15 then you're gonna blow up, simple as that. Me, I appreciate the guy who can pace correctly and
just
hangs on for the last 10K, the guy who blows up 5 miles from the finish just didn't pace correctly...sure, he didn't leave anything on the course but he also didn't run the perfect race.

You missed one thing in the bolded section: not cramp/blow up! The dude just
goes,
and I love it, but he's as big a risk as anyone to fall apart.
Loved seeing Weiss with a great showing on the bike, that's a hell of a time.
Lieto is STRUGGLING...I mean, for the announcers to talk about AG's walking up that section...come on, this is the pro race here, I don't give a flying **** what the AG's do there, Macca's flying up the same section.

I think Macca is making a huge gamble. My guess is he is going too deep, but... Lieto looked cooked already too, so it probably wont matter.
Rinsta is really cutting into Dibens lead though. Womens race should be quite good.

Here's the question with Lieto, seeing how much he's struggling today: with the supposed two year run focus what do people think has happened today? He looks considerably worse than last year. I say this knowing full well that nutrition, bike pacing, weather, which side of the bed you wake up on, etc, have a huge effect but he's really looked terrible since the start of the run.
I'm wondering if the run focus had him a bit too confident on the bike and he just took things too hard before he even had a chance to show off the improved run. Any thoughts?

You don't show the leader because when you show the #2 or #3, you can really let the commentators show their insights: "I really feel for Lieto, I don't think this run is panning out the way he had hoped". Really? He didn't dream of dropping for 1st to 3rd in the first 10 miles?

Monty, in your expert opinion: The first hour at 2h36min marathon pace, even if he dials it back now, isn't the damage already done?
______________
I do not know if that is in fact what he has run thus far, do you know he has 6 flat miles in the bank?? It will not be far off, and since he is a low 2;40 runner, it is just seconds a mile he may have pushed it, and yes backing off say 10 seconds a mile would help. IF he was waay above a normal pace, then it would be too late, but I do not think he is that far off pace. Remember 2;40 is just a bit over 6 flat, so in the course of normal slowing during the day, he may just be on that pace so far..

Why show the leader?? *****
You don't show the leader because when you show the #2 or #3, you can really let the commentators show their insights: "I really feel for Lieto, I don't think this run is panning out the way he had hoped". Really? He didn't dream of dropping for 1st to 3rd in the first 10 miles?
How did the P4 do in the bike count? Must have received an at least unofficial number.

If sshe gets caught it is over. The runner who makes up 11 1/2 minutes is in another league. But there is still time left for Julie. At the 30 sec per mile pace Miranda is gaining, that gives her 8 more miles to have somthing happen to Miranda, or else to her to fuel a fast finish..

So Raelert came off the bike 38sec behind Macca. Now he is 40sec behind. Interesting
It sounded like Macca had a ridiculous transition, I think he may have made up 40 seconds to a minute at T2.
It only sounded that way cause the commentators make up stuff:
Macca T2: 1min57
Raelert T2: 2min5

That's driving me crazy too. I guess these guys didn't get this gig because they excelled in math. Raelert only made up 5sec in the past 2 miles. At this rate, Macca would have 20sec left on the finish line. This is crazy close.

Anyone have any updates on STers?
My neighbor came off the bike in 17th, about 24 min. down. She picked up 20 min. at IMC on the run, but I'm thinking a podium is probably out. Still, as of the beginning of July she was taking the year off of IMs.

Chris McCormack is only 10 km (6 miles) away from his second Ironman title. The problem for the Australian, though, is that he has Andreas Raelert only 25 seconds behind. Craig Alexander's charge to the lead has stalled a bit - he's now only gaining about 10 seconds per mile on the men ahead of him. He's just over five minutes behind in fourth. Marino Vanhoenacker remains in third, 2:17 back.
7:40
As the men head back, with 25 seconds between first and second, the women were heading out to the energy lab, with only 25 seconds between first and second. What a race!

9 miles in _____ ?
Lieto fell apart after the bike, Macca dropped him early and he and Raelert are the two contenders at this point (with Crowie a 100-1 chance). Raelert has been ticking off a few seconds every mile but unless he turns it on it's Macca's to lose.
Carfrae is, as you might have just seen, in the lead. Dibens looked pretty good the whole time, just doesn't have the speed at this point, period. Carfrae is just such a great runner.

Alright, take a deep breath, count to ten...then download this:

I could only install this on this Intel based Macbook Pro.

Has Macca been possuming this whole time? I mean, you can't fully possum at this stage in THIS race but might he have known that Raelert was closing and he slowed down
just
a bit, only to pick it back up to maybe confuse/demoralize Raelert?
THIS IS AMAZING!

McCormack's decisive move - now he's going hard to the line. He just got rid of the sponges that he had under his tri-suit - a look that wasn't his best when he finished in 2007. That tells me he's thinking and has his wits about him as he runs toward the line.

Craig Alexander just ran an incredible 2:41 marathon to finish fourth. He said that he wanted to get out defend his title with pride - he certainly did that, forcing the men ahead of him to pull out their best to finish ahead of him. This is one of the fastest days we've seen in Kona - certainly since Luc Van Lierde set the course record in 1996.

Did you think a 40 year old would get in there??? Honestly it is just about as likely for a 40 year old as a 20 something. Ever since the early days, most the greats had their best ironmans from 35 and on. Now this generation of 35+ somethings are having their best races...

Makes you wonder if he could have pushed the bike just a bit more. He just dropped an amazing run time, maybe 2 minutes on the run would have been worth 5 on the bike? Either way, couragous effort, good on him to keep pushing to the end.

I said something to that earlier, maybe when Chris was at mile five. There was a lot of attention on Alexander going three-peat, and Lieto's preparation on bettering his run. Looks like folks forgot about McCormack. Almost like he was an "unknown," then seeing him surge on the run, but some thought, "Oh, he'll blow up like in the past."

top-10 guys are all in their 30's. Surprising.\\
Did you think a 40 year old would get in there??? Honestly it is just about as likely for a 40 year old as a 20 something. Ever since the early days, most the greats had their best ironmans from 35 and on. Now this generation of 35+ somethings are having their best races...
I'm not surprised that the (vast) majority is in their 30's, but that there is not a single guy in his 20's in there, I think that's surprising.

Makes you wonder if he could have pushed the bike just a bit more. He just dropped an amazing run time, maybe 2 minutes on the run would have been worth 5 on the bike? Either way, couragous effort, good on him to keep pushing to the end.
You can play that game all day, what if Marino rode 3 minutes faster, would he have won??? I think everyone did what they could at the time, and the TRIATHLON played out the way it was supposed to today....

Yeah - me too. Whenever I think about shaving my body/face/legs/whatever.. I think, Faris doesn't have to shave to be awesome. So then I grow my beard out instead.

Pete Jacobs has the fastest run at 2;41 flat??? WHere did that come from? I know he had a penalty and all, sometimes that gives you the break you need, but that is so out there for him...Nice job for a top 10 pete...

Really glad to see Lieto pull through with a finish just outside of the top 10. While the place is not what he had planned for, nor is the 3:06 marathon, however, my hat is off to him for holding on as well as he did. When he was passed by Macca it looked like he was in for a really long marathon....

Well you brought it up, and lucky that all penalties have to be served on the course. In the old days we would not know if Macca won yet, in fact, there have been time when it goes to the next day before someone was told they were penalized and lost the race. Very lucky for him that no marshall saw him there, or if they did, did not think it merited a penalty...What a different race if he loses 4 minutes on the bike//

Carfae is looking consistently solid on the run. She's dialed in.
