There seems to be a good number of really great looking Transitions on the site; everyone post yours here and enjoy the kinship! ;-)

Shots of your bike in action, garage door shots, outfitted for training or race ready, who cares.

You've done fantastic things with the living room. My SL2 keeps the Shiv from getting lonely for the time being, until an SL3 joins the family. Every other ride with one of my teammates ends up with us pondering when Santa will show up with new bikes (we're sort of in the same family - you're sponsored by Specialized and I'm riding for Team Specialized next year).

And if you're saying what I think you're saying, believe the hype.

Why are you using the back bolt on the seatpost?

Most of the bikes posted here are using the offset seatpost... with the seat all the way forward.

I wonder why there arent more 0 offset seatposts?

I'm running my seat where it is as a function of correct fit for me; I'm not flexible enough to ride as steep as some of the others.

As to why many are running the standard offset post with the seat all the way forward as opposed to the zero offset, I would guess it's because only the S-Works comes with the zero offset post. All other models must buy it seperately and it's not cheap. If you can get to where you need to be on the standard offset post, the zero setback becomes an expensive cosmetic upgrade.

I wasnt suggesting changing your seatpost angle. It just looked to me from the picture that you could use the front offset position and have a better hold on the seat rails. I always worry about having the bolts hold the rails at the very back (though that may be OK as well.)

With regards to the flexibility/steep issue I am the wrong person to make commentary on that.... though there is at least one person posting here who might. However, as I understand from the FIST discussions there is flexibility issue with regards to how steep/not steep you can ride.... the only flexibility issue comes into how much drop you can have.... though once again I am the wrong person to make commentary on that.

oh no, i got my frenglish wrong. What i meant to say is, i dont like the seat post that people have on there transition. I dont think it make the bike look good. You are the only one with a straigh seat post and that is the best way to make the bike look mean and fast... Just my opinion really..... but i think that ''neutral'' straigh seat post look way better than what i see in the other pic on this thread... and would allowed for one step bike also!

Re: Specialized Transition mafia [helios] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

It seems to me that Specialized needs to make an additional piece for the setback seatpost. A clamp with the seatclamp in the middle. The current reversable clamp leaves UCI legal riders with a choice of seat all the way forward (in the back position of the clamp) or all the way back (with the forward position of the clamp). It would be an easy fix.

I weighed my S-works with a pair of 202 tubulars and s-works mondo tires on and got 14.1. I think I could get it to 13.5, maybe even sub-13, in very raceable condition easily.

I have a team geo (lower head tube) sz58.

Tarmac. Sorry. I just realized that he was probably asking about the Transition.

Sub-13 for a Transition would be BAMF...

They are not so light. My medium S-works with SRAM red, Specialized SRM, and Hed Black Dog bars is a little under 19 with training wheels. Just a little lighter with 808s.
As I recall bare frame weight was 1650ish grams and fork 540ish? Post is not light either so that puts you 600+ grams heavier than some of the lighter bikes out there.
Not that it matters for tri/tt.

Thanks for the info! I know it doesn't really matter and it wouldn't be a huge difference, but I'm a nerd for useless information :) HOWEVER, if Jordan's Transition really was ~13lbs, then I'd say the premium for S-Works over the over frames is a steal!
For reference, mine came in at 21.12lbs as pictured above.

I've never tossed our bikes on the scale, but my friend has an S-WORKS and it is considerably lighter than my Transition, enough to notice just by picking em up. The carbon is higher quality which results in less being used to get the stronger frame.

I'm gonna say it's time to check out that scale of yours. My medium S-Works with the tubular Easton's pictured above came in at about 17.1. And for anyone wondering, yes, weight does make a big difference. Not sure why people would think otherwise.

There should only be 80-100g difference between frames depending on size between S-Works and Pro. That's from the source.

It's a large...if they had any '09 XLs in stock (with the identical stack to the large) it would've been a tough choice between the 2 for me. As it is, both of those sizes have less front center than my old 55 P2K had.

in a similar vein to the above post, i, too, am looking for either an uncut setback or uncut zero setback seatpost for my red 2009 transition pro. i've had a couple leads but i haven't been able to solidify anything yet. so if anyone has the stock 2009 pro seatpost or the seatpost from their red 2009 s-works transition, please contact me. thanks!

chrisar/gwest, if you're reading this, can you please get back to me?

This was the original . . .

Then the cable sleeve on inside of the frame crinkled and Specialized replaced it for free, but not the paint job so here she is now . . .

She is VERY VERY good to me . . .

I am the proverbial - Fat Guy With A Little Coat - . . .

I follow the, "If you can't be fast, Buy fast!"

I have S-Works Roubaix, Tarmac, and Transition. I also have the Transition Pro (my training bike)

I put a lot of miles in on my TT bike so I made a decision to go with a training bike . . . Or to be cool in my own mind, I'm not sure which.

AND I JUST - Figured who this is. KMill in da house!

Not yet...but based on the tunnel results posted by MITAerobike, I expect it to be very similar to the P3C I had borrowed.

here's a question for the mafia---are there any tricks to getting the rear wheel on/off without having to get your hands dirty? I'm finding that with the way the dropouts are situated, I always have to grab the chain or the RD to get the wheel on/off. am I just an idiot? I'm just to road bikes where the rear wheel takes a second to remove/install. Thanks guys/gals.

You do need to touch the rear derailleur...but it shouldn't get your hands dirty.

You're making some assumptions about femur length for that 5'4". I would wager that the rider has short femurs for his height.

I just helped a teammate decide on whether he should go with a size S or M Transition. He's 5'8", but his torso length is disproportionately long for his height. Basically, from his hips to his shoulders, he has the body of a guy who's 5'11" or so...and his femurs are proportionally shorter to take him down to 5'8". He ended up deciding on a going with a M, but having them swap 170 crankarms and a straight seatpost for the stock post. Seat position-wise he'd obviously fit on either...but the M "fit" his upper body better.

Special thanks to Andrew at Specialized for setting us up with the stickers for the wheels. Really brought the old school trispokes up to date!

like the wheels

I know why everyone gets rid of that base bar it comes with. Just got mine out on the road for the first time today. The Zertz insert......garbage...... its in the way and cant bring my clip-ons inward anymore. so i have to turn my s-bends and i don't like the feel of that with my hands. should be getting a profile cobra soon.

Im open to any other thoughts on a good base bar

New setup. Switched over from a size large Transition Comp. This is an xl. Much better feel. No more lower back or hip discomfort. Really happy with how it turned out.

Have Hed3's for race wheels.

Can anyone comment on a 2008 vs. 2009 comp? The 09 has a full vision cockpit and the 08 is pretty standard except for the Zipp aero bars. The 08 is also around $500 cheaper. Anything else I'm missing?

It's been asked a couple times, but here goes again. I'm trying to find the black and yellow zero offset seat post for a 2009 Transition comp. Any ideas. I've done quite a bit of google'ing with no luck. I've only been able to find the white and black one listed on the Specialized website. If I can't find one I may have mine painted.

Thanks!

good luck.

I could be wrong, but I think the reason why you've had no luck is because the comp only comes with one seat post option. Someone mentioned it in an early thread (i.e. only the s-works version had 2 seatposts) and if you go on specialized's website, it mentions two seatposts for the s-works only (go under archives and click under "technical specifications" for the s-works and the comp) .

I noticed you are clamping your adamo at the very back of the saddle rail, and since you put all your weight on the front of the adamo do you ever have issues with your saddle rotating if you hit potholes or anything?

Nope.

I'll have to check though, but I do recall that I've moved my saddle slightly forward since that pic was taken...and I think I may have swapped the mount around so that it's clamping on the front part of the rails. There wasn't quite enough room to do so the way I originally had it.

Either way, I haven't had any "tilt issues".

Re: Specialized Transition mafia [jkhussey41] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

Just a preference thing. I liked the branding better on the 08/09 bikes and the aggressive look of the paint scheme. The 10/11 looks (to me) a little half-hearted. The best of the bunch for 10/11 is the comp, with the carbon/red/white. I talked to Specialized about them custom-painting me one in the old '08/09 carbon/yellow, and they said they couldn't do it, and doing it on my own would void the warranty. So I'm looking at some different bikes for 2011, which breaks my heart--I really really love the Transition.

I, too, am a member of the Specialized Transition mafia.

I don't have a camera so I can't post a photo, but it's a Black and Yellow Transition Comp, upgraded with complete Dura-Ace group, Profile Design Cobra wing base bar and Stryke aerobars, and Hed Jet 9 in the back and Hed Jet 6 in the front.

The upgrades have made the ride exceptional. Plus, as others have noted, the color combination is superb--different from most bikes.

Thanks for starting this thread. I've enjoyed looking at the photos and reading the posts. You all have very nice bikes.

So I'm waiting to build up my new-to-me 2009 Transition. None of my previous bikes had internal cable routing and I used the Cateye Astrale8 computer (wired). I like it alot because I could switch between Cadence and MPH on the big display. I have tried other Cateye's that have cadence but you can only see it as the smaller, bottom number.
It doesn't seem possible to use the A-8 with the Transition so I'm looking for some advice on computers that can have cadence on the bigger display.

Thanks.

On my previous setup, I looped the wire around the cable housing. With the internal cables, how would I run the wire to the rear without looping it around the frame?

Those harnesses aren't very expensive, right? ($15-$20?)...well, if it was me, I'd buy a spare harness, cut the wire near the computer mount, feed it up through the "SRM port" (i.e. the spare "channel" that goes between the frame cable entry behind the stem and coming out at the bottom of the downtube next to the rear brake cable outlet) and then splice the harness back together. If you don't feel up to the "challenge" of that splice job, you HAVE to be able to find a friend that's wiring saavy enough to do it for you, right?

That is some nice outside the box thinking!!! As an aside, are you aware of any wireless ones that allow you to change the position of the cadence/mph numbers?

Not really that "out of the box" if you know what that spare channel is for in the first place ;-)

Don't really know about the other question...I can configure my 705 to display basically anything I want all at once...and I'm not much up on other bike computers. Sorry.

My transition should be delivered in few days. Any recommendations on the best place to attach a speed sensor. Can't see any in the photos on this thread so there must be a good place to hide it. It is my first tri bike and I've been using a road bike with a wireless sensor on the back of the front fork until now, which must be an easy location to improve on.

thanks

Picked up mine the other day - very happy! Few more fits to go, am gonna swap the saddle out for an Adamo and lower the bars. The white tape is also going and I have XLab rear hydration mounts to add. Also looking at a speedfill.

Has anyone else who uses a Garmin gone with a stem mount? Or any other ideas welcome please.

Ummm...isn't your speed pretty easy to determine when your bike is attached to a trainer or on rollers? It's basically, zero, no? ;-)

On the rain...Welcome to SoCal. It doesn't rain often, but when it rains, it RAINS! We typically get a week's worth of rain at least once throughout the winter season.

Ahh but if you have cadence and a garmin you don't need the GPS - the cadence bit does speed and distance too. Genius.

Yes but you need GPS for it. If you get the cadence kit, you get a spoke magnet so it does speed, dist, cadence indoors on a turbo/rollers

Yes, they have one available...but you don't need to use it. GPS based speed works just fine for the vast majority of purposes.

I don't know if anyone caught it, but my response to Jordan was partially to hint that I'm not sure what the purpose of measuring speed/distance indoors could be ;-)

Can you afford a HR monitor? That (along with a really good fan to cool you) would be a more reliable measure of "training dose" than any speed/distance measurement that doesn't relate to riding outdoors.

I've got the XLab super wing cage mount for behind the seat for now and during training. Will probably look to get a speedfil for when the weather hots up and racing approaches. You're gonna love it! To post a picture:
1. Open a photobucket account.
2. Upload your pictures to your account from your computer (I use "My Pictures" folder for this).
3. Locate the html link below the pic in the share box (the 3rd link in the box).
4. Click once on the link, it will say "copied" for a few seconds.
5. Go back to the Slowtwitch thread (I always have two windows open).
6. In the text box of your reply, right click and click on "paste".
7. When you save or preview your post the picture should be in the body of the post.

Just make sure your pictures are not too big as they will take forever to upload and will be too big to link properly. It is easy, although different, to change the picture size on digital cameras.

Now, lets see some pics.

I got this weapon in June, for 60% off brand new...came with Zipps and everything.. Unfortunatly though I bought it on the way to going to the doctor as I was feeling ill... Turned out I had Glandular and was unable to ride it for 3.5months.

Anyway I have been riding it since October and needless to say the more I ride it the more I love it. Not only is it fast and stable it (as any teenager will tell you) most importantly it looks awesome.

This is me last weekend at a OD State Champs on my way to the fastest time in my AG (not gonna lie having the best bike in my AG always helped a lot!).

In regards to fit, it is quite relaxed as I was being cautious as my first race on it was a HIM, I am planning on moving the armpads in closer over winter and getting a little lower. Also I am still having some discomfort in the downstairs region so will look at fits/saddles to change that. For the record I had a BG fit.

Seat tube? Or seat post? If you're considering cutting the actual frame, no, there is no recommended way to do it. You'll destroy your warranty and most likely your frame in the process.

If you just need to cut the seat post: Yes, a new, fine-bladed hacksaw will work. Once you get the spot marked to cut, place a strip of masking tape all the way around the post and then cut through the tape. This will help keep the carbon fibers from splitting so much on the end. Once you're done, use some fine grain sandpaper to smooth out the end and you're done.

Hacksaw with 24-32 tpi blade, cutting guide and a vent mask. Make sure you know have dialed in your fitting because if it ends up being too low, you will need a new fork. Also make sure there is some clearance between the top of the stem and the top tube (couple millimeters) so your headset cap has some room.

Oh, you are probably right. Same technique could be used for the seat tube, except the clamping might be more difficult. At least you don't have to worry about making it all even and pretty since the cut end should be out of sight (Transition right)?

Thanks for the responses. Yes I was talking about the seat post. Not the seat tube technically speaking, however some frames have seat masts that are designed to be cut. I'm in the process of building up a transition pro frame any areas I should particularly pay attention to. Should I have the frame chased and faced prior to BB install or is that just over kill? I was also considering replacing the cable housing that came with it (bought it used). Is it a pain to re route.

Thanks

Here's what Ive done so far:
Disregard the blue bar tape, it will be a more proper color when I'm done.

Looks like you have a cable stop (hanger) for the front brake integrated with the A-head upper bearing cap, is that right?
It also looks like your cable stop is long enough to allow a levelled stem without exessivly bending the front brake cable.

Do you know the brand of the cable stop and where I can buy a similar one? I'm trying to get the same low stack on my aero bars as you have.

Great looking bike by the way, love the colors and wheels!

The way my seat is positioned on the post, it doesn't really work too well. I put a tube between the rails on my seat and stuff the rest in my jersey pockets.

It's taken me months to find one that fits the seat post! Found an altura one that does. I use it for iphone/co2 etc as I don't like having stuff in pockets.

That's what your jersey is for in training. Racing with a bag is lame. ;)

I had a hard time finding a saddle bag that had a long enough strap to go around my Transitions' seatpost. I ended up sewing some extra velcro to extend it. I know seatposts are lame and everything, but I think being stranded on the side of the road with a flat or a mechanical is lamer. ;-P

I wouldn't worry what is supposedly right or wrong regarding something so trivial as a saddle bag. I live in a rural area and like to have all my life savers on me - tube, levers, CO2, phone, money etc. and would rather carry it in a saddle bag as it's easier.

Re: Specialized Transition mafia [mdraegerpnw] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

I don't think seatposts are lame, but attaching lots of junk to your bike kinda is when you have a perfectly nice jersey to carry it all. Triathletes never seem to use those jersey pockets. But if you MUST have a bag under your seat the ones from Spesh work just fine. Jordan Rapp has a gray one in some photos of his transition. One great thing about Specialized is that you can stick with them for just about all your gear, from bikes to bags to water bottles.

I train in a tri top... doesn't have any pockets.... It's just easier to go into a brick in that than a jersey? Maybe should invest in a jersey, maybe it's where I'm going wrong :P

08 Sworks was first Transition. Used it, loved it. Always had a thing for the 08/09 black/yellow comp though. Happened to find somebody who was selling a frameset & I couldn't help myself. Ended up being more trouble than it was worth. Had to have a straight post custom painted, had some issues with the internal routing & FD cable stops (Specialized fixed all that). Was a great way to learn how to build a bike though. In the process of taking down the Sworks, found some decent cracks in the top of of the frame around the seatpost clamp. I guess there were some issues with this clamp back then. In any event, I was able to warranty the frame & that is how I ended up with the '11 Pro. I love having it in an XL & knocking out my spacers. I wasn't a huge fan at first, but know I think it's really a looker. I'm still a huge fan of Specialized.

Recently completed. And for those of you searching, use the part number shown to order this hanger through the "warranty parts department" of Specialized. Note that you will need a standard stem with this part as it replaces the stem insert that comes with the bike. Also note that you will need a different thread-in boss for the termination of the brake cable since the treads on these hangers are smaller than the original equipment. Enjoy.

Is this different to the hangar that came with the '10/11 transition pro? My original one is stopping me getting my front end as low as I want. Have already had to change some of the cabling.

Here's mine:

2010/2011 Transition Pro

SRAM Red with Force 50/34t 170mm (got rid of the Specialized stuff)
Adamo Race 2 saddle
Disc cover (ST classifieds, oh yeah!)
Home mounted bottle cage (XLab Gorilla plus Camelbak Podium Chill)
Still riding the Mavic Cosmic Carbones (just took the decals off) with Conti GP4000S's

The disc cover is taped on and rides nice.

To come:

New aerobars? But first I'd like some new race wheels. Just don't know what to get - HED? Zipp?

I just did that "custom" job with some colored electrical tape. Easy! But you can certainly do a mask & paint. Or have some local airbrush guy do it. Painting carbon is super easy. Any automotive paint would be fine. I'd just get some krylon spray paint and use that with some masking tape & newspaper to set your masks.

I should be back in LV for the ITU LD World's in early Nov. Thanks for the kudos!

Thanks for the pointers!

Look forward to seeing you at ITU Long Course. I swim Master's with Frank, the RD for Silverman/70.3 WC/ITU Long Course and will be volunteering that day....look forward to seeing you out there! The bike course for ITU remains much the same as Silverman, whereas, for 70.3 WC, they take it away from the "Three Sisters" and River Mountain Loop Trail, which in my opinion was a real defining element for Silverman. Too many people in too short a time period I am told. I think it has something to do with getting media access to the trail. (IMHO!)

I am fortunate enough to have won a lottery spot for 70.3 that were made available for local athletes, should be a fun experience! Nothing wrong with chomping down on some HUMBLE pie!

Thanks again.

WOW! ultra cool with Quarq powermeter and DI2! How do you like that bottle with the "aero" straw? I see you got an aftermarket straight seatpost too. I just got one in the same paint - did you cut yours? Is it difficult? And whats up with the "minimum seatpost insertsion"? How does that work?

Love the Di2. Big shout-out to Emery's (see signature line) for the wiring. Cannot use the internal wiring kit for the Transition. So, Emery's had to improvise. They made a custom mounting bracket under the bottom bracket to hold the connections. They actually routed the wire under and attached it to the rear brake arm to keep it hidden. It really is an amazing job.

I am mixed on the bottle. I love the shape, love the bracket, love the "tray" for the Garmin, and love the ease of use. However ... if filled too full, it splashes everywhere on even the smallest of bumps. Splashes very badly.

Yes, I had to cut the seatpost. It is quite long. Not hard. Measured multiple times, then used a band saw with a carbon cutting blade. Are you talking about the "minimum seatpost insertion" marking on the back of the seat tube near the little hole? I believe the seat post has to be at least long enough to go past that hole. I cut it w/ some wiggle room and had no issues.

Joining the Mafia! I've had the bike a little less than a year, and it got me through training for and racing Ironman South Africa without any significant trouble. I originally bought the black and yellow Transition Comp, but after a month the front derailleur cable jammed inside the frame, and Specialized replaced it with a 2010 Pro frame. Can't complain about that kind of customer service.

I was extremely fortunate to get a Kona 2011 lottery slot, so my next major race on this bike will be in Hawaii. I'm looking at upgrading my wheels next - really like what I see about the Flo 60/90 combo (if they're ready in time) and have a Zipp FC 404/808 set on reserve to rent if that does not pan out.

Besides wheels, any recommendations on upgrades/improvements? As you can see, I've been reading the forums here, and dumped the double-bottle rear hydration carrier I used to have and now have a single tie-wrapped under the seat, a torpedo-style cage up front, and the Virtue aero bottle on the frame. The rear under-seat cage can hold either a toolkit (as seen in the picture) or extra water.

The point of the transition frame is indeed to have a lot of seatpost showing. Thats why the frame slopes down so heavily. The seatpost is extremely aerodynamic with its narrow foil shape, whereas it is not possible to make the frame that narrow and foil shaped - thus the more seatpost the better :)

Hi all. Im on the verge of joining the mafia. Some advice on which frame is needed though. Is there a huge amount of difference between the sworks and the pro? At the moment Ive got the choice of a brand new 2010 pro frame or a year old sworks with the s-works being marginally more expensive than the new pro frame.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

No. The Sworks is 9r, the rest are 7r, except the Shiv which is 10r.

Basically, different layups, altering weight and stiffness a tiny bit. High odds you'd never notice the difference between the three, as the Transition is a monster stiff bike in any layup or configuration. I've had Sworks, Comp, and Pro. I can't notice a difference, but I can tell you that they are all incredibly stiff.

If it was my money, I'd buy the new bike.

it is a poor design. even if you blow up the bottle & don't squeeze it before you put it in the cage, it's still prone to popping out.

that's why most of us use velcro, because the bottle fits better in the frame than any other.

just slap some sticky industrial strength velcro on the cage:bottle interface.

bottom of bottle, top of cage. at this point I only have some at the bottom of the bottle where it curves & in the curvy part of the cage by the seattube.

no popping out.

No need to bother with velcro. Just roughing up the sides of the bottle with a little sandpaper will do the trick.

Enjoy.

Standard 1 1/8" steer tube stem. You can't just remove the sleeve from the stock stem and use it...wrong diameter. The part number to order is W70940011 from your Specialized dealer's waranty dept. (or call the waranty department directly). Ignore the bottom number. I didn't bother with measuring the thread size since I fabricated a sleeve from spare parts at home. When you pick up the part, just have them supply you with a cable boss that will fit (from their spare parts bin). Easy to do.

The photo you are referencing is the setup before I switched out the brake hanger (that is the original 100mm Specialized adjustable stem set to -16 deg. (I think that's correct?)). I am running a -10 degree 100mm Vision Sizemore right now (below) with my Vision bars (~50$). You can definitely buy lighter, but a 20% lighter stem is 20% of a really small number to start with...

the stem that i currently have on my bike is a 80mm with between a 8-10 degree rise. By me switching out the brake hanger and then getting a stem and flipping it over essentially giving me a 8 to 10 degree drop, will i have to get a longer or shorter stem to keep the same distance between my armrests and seat?

So if I understand your correctly, you are moving from the 1cm standard drop hanger to the low-profile, deep drop hanger, right?

You currently have a 5mm top cap & 10mm hanger height. Moving to the integrated, I believe total stack will be 5mm.

And then you want to take your 10° drop stem & make it a 10° rise?

If all that is correct, you'd be well served to play around here: http://alex.phred.org/stemchart/Default.aspx

Set your control as 73° steer angle, 80mm stem, +/-10°. You can play with the spacers & stem angles to see how much stack/reach you get from each iteration of adjustment.

So, in essence, if you have this:

80mm stem / 15mm spacer / 10° negative rise

and go to this:

80mm stem / 5mm spacer / 10° positive rise

Your new position will be 6mm shorter in reach & 17mm higher in stack.

Re: Specialized Transition mafia [grosso27] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

Correct on few accounts. Yes moving to the deeper drop hanger. I wanted to do this initially to flip my stem upside down get get my bars even lower, not higher. So instead of a 10 degree rise, i wanted to have a 10 degree drop. I think i am saying that right. I want lower bars is the bottom line. Through the process i have found out that i need a different stem as well because of the steering tube diameter. So i am under the impression that i need to replace my stem becuase it does not accommodate the integrated drop diameter.

with all this said, i was curious wether or not i needed a longer or shorter stem. I want to maintain the same distance between my arm pads and my seat however just be lower in the front end.

Re: Specialized Transition mafia [readytoride] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

I'm pretty confused about what your current setup is & if you want to keep it the dimensions the same or change the fit.

Either way, go to the site I linked. Enter as the red stem your current fit. Ie, 80mm / whatever rise/drop you have / spacers.

Steerer angle is 73. Assuming you are using the cane creek headset cap & the 1cm brake hanger, your spacers should total 15mm.

Now play with the blue stem until you get the two stems to basically match, within reason. Your new spacer amount should be 5.

ie, if you are right now at 80mm -10, and you go to a 80mm -7, doing the spacer swap, you will be 2mm longer, 5mm lower.

just playing with the link a bit this is what i came up with. I currently have a 80mm stem with a 10 degree rise and a 5mm spacer. I am going to get a a 80mm stem with a negative 10 degree rise and take out the 5mm spacer. This will generate a 33mm drop and extend my reach by 10mm. With that said, I will have to move my seat up on the rails a bit more to have the same distance between my arm pads and my seat. did i make sense with all this? Really appreciated the link by the way. this is exactly what i was trying to figure out.

Start here: http://www.slowtwitch.com/...de_Bike_Fit_649.html

Stem is the final variable (and will likely get longer in your case...which is good since I would think that it would get twitchy down in the aero position with an 80mm stem...and with too little weight on the front wheel, would cause speed wobbles and wind gust issues with my H3's, ...but I digress)

Start with station angle per Slowman's tutorial. Buy an on-screen protractor (~$40) for your pc, and "tune" your position step by step. Reason being is that there are a lot of scenarios and a lot of unknowns that would make my recommendations useless.

If everything with your fit is currently perfect except for a larger than ideal hip angle...then you can likely get away with doing what you've proposed with the understanding that your forearm-to-pad interface will be a little more toward your hands (more elbow hanging off the back of the pads and a slightly larger shoulder angle).

If everything with your fit is currently perfect except you want to present less surface area to the wind...then you will rotate your static position around the bottom bracket and buy a stem that meets your forearms in their new location (likely slightly longer and definitely angled down).

If everything with your........there are a lot of scenarios. I would need your measurements and pics, but following Slowman's tutorial is where I would probably start if you are new to this. It's fun, and causes OCD.

It is the above scenario. Just want to flatten out a bit so i have less wind resistance. based on the number that i ran. Just sticking with an 80mm stem and going with a negative 10 degree rise versus the positive 10 that i currently have, this will lengthen my reach about 10mm. So with that said i will not have to get a new stem. Plus even if i wanted to keep the same ratio from my arm pads to my seat all i would hav to do is move my seat up. I am aware that this would rotate my entire body position over the bottom bracket in whick i am definitely ok with. I find myself riding way up on the nose anyways when i am cranking it out. Wouldnt mind having a bit more surface area to sit on.

Firstly, I'm happy to be understood. Secondly, my rear disc wheel is a Reynolds Element. Usualy, this kind of wheels are tubular but I've chosen a clincher version. You will find some details on this address:

http://www.reynoldscycling.com/..._item&p_itm_pk=9

I'm extremely happy of that wheel. I'd like one day to buy a front wheel Zipp 1080. Spoke wheels are great, no doubt but I'd lie if I told I wasn't curious.

I've just seen your website, that's a very nice passion in deed.

Drswammy: You're absolutely right, RED SRAM won't make me a better biker but I hope that it'll make me better shifting that's all. I also wanted something quite light, that's the second point which decided me. When you buy some very expensive peice, I think it's normal to hope something great and beautiful but it's just a point of view.

For your photo: Yes, it looks like a great place to ride. I can see that your wheels are Zipp. I'd like to try their wheel because every one says that they're great...

Steve_c: Many thanks, I'm a student, I work in a job a 15h a week, it allows me to buy things whixh improves my bike weeks after weeks :D I can't wait to ride equiped with the R2C on it!

larf, I love your front wheel, it is exactly the one I want :D Are you satisfied of it? My front wheel is your rear one, I'm glad to ride with it but I envy to try a Zipp 1080 :( You've got a very nice bike! I just stay a little bit surprised when I see the Shimano shifters because the materiel used is aluminium, the others are in carbon. I expect you to say that it won't be a big difference between an alloy shifter and a carbon one but I regret to see that Shimano doesn't make as much innovation as Sram on TT components.

Please let me know if you don't understand me, I never use translator to improve myself in english but it might not be the best way to be understood I guess.

Hello, the 1080 is a fast wheel, Zipp states that the new 808 FC is even faster but I am not even close to the FOP so I ride what I like most, period. You have to get used handling it in windy conditions, it´s a little like sailing. Carbon or aluminum shifters are just the same for me, carbon being better looking though.

Here I have been a member for 2 years, and it took this long to post this picture. Built this bike during winter of 2009/2010, and everything on this bike came from the markdown table at the LBS, or from ebay (starting with the frame at a 40% discount) . The only thing i am annoyed with is the color scheme of the seat post. I had to get a longer seatpost, and the only colorway available was the 'team' colors, so no way to match the rest of the bike. Oh, and the other thing to be choked about, the seat post cost 30% of what the frame originally cost!

Thats Ok, its a damn fun ride!

Hey there
I'm just about to pick up my Transition, and was wondering how your disc cover goes? I've got HED Jet 6's but noticed on Wheelbuilder's website that the Transition is incompatible with their disc cover.
Any tips so I don't go get something that doesn't work...
Thanks

Yeah...apparently that's their general response to folks looking to run a cover in a Transition.

That said, it all depends on the particular hub (and its NDS flange location) and also requires one to tape the cover to the spokes from the inside. Do a search here and you should find out all the information you could ever want to know ;-)

Got car doored on the really expensive! 2010 S-Works Transition :(.

pics:

https://picasaweb.google.com/...Gv1sRgCLvttI-r0dyITA
https://picasaweb.google.com/...v1sRgCPb0sN_onP_M0QE

My renters insurance through Allstate covered it. You owners with EXPENSIVE bikes NEED to have this. Now, I wouldn't even ride unless my insurance was up to date. Do you have the $$$ to replace your bike out of pocket?

Mine cost $135 per year with special sports equipment added. It covers $10k max, $2.5k max single item (frame/module with depreciation).

All I have to say is after the mountain of insurance paperwork and physical recovery, I went with a Trek Speed Concept 9.9.

Main reason for the switch (FYI for Transition Owners):

-I can now adjust my brakes at my handlebars (while riding!), and it doesn't take me 1 hour and two same size hex keys to adjust them properly (as on my S-Works Transition).
-Also, not that it makes a lot of difference in triathlon, but the even the S-Works version of the Transition isn't the lightest bike out there. Extra weight only helps if you're like me (~124lbs) and need the help to catch the big guys on the downhill :).

Hopefully this helps someone out in the future, biggest thing is don't learn the hard way that insurance is cheap and worthwhile when you go down on your expensive rig!

Try this again....

This is my winter project where I got the idea from 'timtri13' . I wanted the orange inside the forks, but after finishing the paint job, I am second guessing myself. The finished project will look like some version of the last picture with grey logo and 'S'. Let me know what you guys think of the orange.

Re: Specialized Transition mafia [nole-limit] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

Originally I ordered Carbolift, and followed their process to remove the paint. (brush on thick, wrap, put in front of heater...etc), but it did not work well with the clearcoat and portions of the really thick paint. It did work very well with some of the thinner logo paint, it stripped it right off in less than an hour, but places where the paint was really thick like the front fork where the aluminum met the carbon I put at least 4 applications and even left overnight in front of a heater and it still wasn't coming off. It made a really big mess... imo

I resorted to 150grit sandpaper to get the rest of the paint/clearcoat off, and once i broke through to carbon I moved to 320grit so not to eat the carbon up. I then followed that up with a 650grit really light over the whole bike to really smooth it off. Once it was completely sanded smooth to my liking I cleaned it off with denatured alcohol until the cloth was completely white with no carbon residue.

My original plan was to strip the bike and take it to a body shop to have them paint it. They quoted me $200 if I had everything stripped and brought to them in pieces. I decided to try it myself with $40 in spray paint and if it didn't work out i would take it to a professional.

After doing a lot of reasearch online and talking to a few body shop guys I bought Krylon Fusion (flat) spraypaint. I did not have to put a primer on with that since it bonds to the material like a primer. I used a whole can on a practice piece of plastic to make sure i knew how far away, and how long to spray without running...etc. Once I felt comfortable with spraying it took it to the frame. I put on 4 coats of flat black over a couple days, using 650 grit sandpaper on any blemishes in between coats. The black turned out better than I could have imagined I would do, really smooth and no blemishes....I then turned to the masking....man that was a pain in the rear. long story short there are a couple places where the tape lifted and I had some underspray, but was able to fix most of it with a 1500gr sandpaper. I felt better about my taping job after visiting my LBS and seeing some of the same problems I had on a 'professional' paint job.

I was really pleased with the outcome. Now if I can just get my vinyl stickers done, it will complete it. I ended up saving $160 on a paint job, which is going to upgrading my components. Next purchase SRAM Red RD...

Inform you local Specialized dealer to order it through their Warranty Parts Department. You will need a different threaded brake housing termination screw as well (it's a smaller thread than the stock hanger uses), but this should be something they have in a spare parts bin.

i recently purchased a cover for a Jet60. I informed Wheelbuilder that it was for a Transition so i expected to have to tape the NDS to the spokes. They did a great job. They sent a request for photos of the wheel and made something that is perfect for the job. At first i thought they had made a mistake as the NDS was smaller than the DS - but they informed me it was so it would fit closer to the spokes..........and it does. It is a perfect fit with the edge of the rim. No need to tape from the inside and not even close to touching the chain stays.

Just shows it isn't two plastic circles and a few scews that you are buying - it is the years of expertise.

Hi everyone!

Just to remember that I'm French, yeah, no one is perfect... :) Just to apologize for my poor english, I'll try to be understandable as much as I can.

As I said few weeks later, I was buildind my bike, I've changed some pieces and bought other one... I tried to buy each component which was the best for me and then, I've realized my "Marc's bike" :)
I've put a latex chamber on my rear wheel, I've used some talcum powder, I took some pictures to show my preparation for the members who are about to invest on it ;) The tyre is a Continental GP4000S which is very good on yet road...Well I hope that it'll be helpful :D I've put a tubular tire on my front wheel which increases the comfort of riding but it's my personal view...

And to have the detail of the weight:

The datas are in grammes, so finally, my bike is 8.4kg. As you can notice, that's not the lightest bike but it's absolutly fantastic to keep the speed when you're riding.

So I hope you enjoyed!

My new 2011 Transition Pro frame set is on the Fedex truck for delivery today (only place I could find a large frame set was on clearance at bike shop in NY, no inventory at Specialized so LBS couldn't get it).

This will be my first time building a bike from scratch. Current bike is a roadie that I converted to TT, so I already have bars/brakes/crank/adamo saddle and have a set of H3's. Will add SRAM Force derailleurs and TT900 bar-end shifters. Can't wait to build it, will post pics when finished. Then I get to convert the roadie back to original drops/STI shifters...old crank kind of sucks, but it won't be my primary ride anyway.

THIS IS THE BADDEST TRANSITION I HAVE EVER SEEN. I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THIS BIKE, BUT YOU HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL OF EYE APPEAL. VERY NICE JOB.

This probably isn't the thread to bring this up, and pardon my ignorance. I've always liked the looks of this bike, but I heard or read somewhere that they fit a certain body type and are hard to fit. As a result, I never looked further, and have been fixated on Cervelo. But man, these are some crazy sick looking bikes! This has definitely tweaked my interest and requires more research!

Ok - my bad. I googled this bike, and found the ST article on this bike.

great looking bike

but how come you have the speed/cadence sensor mounted on the front side of the front fork?

I have always thought it would be more aero to have it mounted rear-facing: that way it is tucked in behind the fork are out of the way. Am i missing something?

Re: Specialized Transition mafia [shouldbeworking] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

maybe this will prevent the device from snapping off any spokes if it somehow gets pushed into the spokes while riding. if it were placed in the rear of the fork you could either lose your sensor completely or lose some spokes... during a race neither are good options.

Re: Specialized Transition mafia [triathlung] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

I think the consensus is that it is just "not that aero", and after some research any reasonable person can see why they say that. Like you, I find that these bikes LOOK very good, and look EVEN BETTER when they have been pimped as they have on this thread. Also like you, I have moved on from Specialized and I am also fixated on Cervelo currently. I really wanted to match my SL4 Tarmac with a sweet Transition in the same color way, but just see that the bike is weakish in aero design at the end of the day- but I am still drawn in by photos like this and the price and the fact that I am never going to be a "contender" anyway so what do I care. I am now in the midst of a P3 build and have parted ways with the Transition, but they are fun to look at for sure.

Re: Specialized Transition mafia [Runless] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

I am implying that a less than "flat" top tube, as a simple example, doesn't exactly make sense to me (so far as I can see in the little time I have taken to look into such matters) with respect to aero design given that a design like that increases the vertical exposure to airflow of that part, for example, unnecessarily. There are a number of articles that would support this position, I'm sure, if one were so inclined to seek them out. I also imply that, for me, it doesn't really matter anyway (I'm not a contender- ever), and that I have moved on from Specialized to a P3 because I appreciate that it is more simplistic and aesthetically appealing to me than the Transition [is now], but that I still really love looking at Transitions and still photograph them in T1 when I see a nice one, and did so again just recently at the 70.3 in Singapore where I saw a number of really good looking examples including a crazy green one. I think this position, my position, is one of the reasons that this thread still pops up from time-to-time: people just seem to really like their Transitions, and some people without Transitions also really like looking at Transitions. I am new here, but I have not seen the "Show Us Your P3" thread- although I would like that very much, too. I have seen the "Transition Mafia" thread pop up many times, though, and each time I look forward to seeing who has done what with the Transition platform. It's probably a bit like a VW Beetle in that regard??? Or not, but I digress....

I am not implying that I am an expert, nor am I implying that the hairs you may care to split appeal to me in any way.

After getting a good deal on the frame, this was my first solo bike build. Most of the parts I took off my old road-to-TT conversion, ordered new shifters/derailleurs. Let me know how I did!

Frame: 2011 Specialized Transition Pro (L)
Race Wheels: Hed 3, decals removed
Base Bar: Profile Design Cobra Wing
Aero Bars: Profile Design Sonic CSX Carbon S-Bend
Shifters: SRAM TT900
Front Derailleur: SRAM Force
Rear Derailleur: SRAM Force
Crank: Shimano 105 Hallowtech, 165mm, 50-34 (considering replacing with SRAM Apex to get it black, but not sure I want to spend any more money...)
Pedals: Speedplay X-5
Saddle: Adamo Race
Cables: Jagwire Racer

Hi, nice looking machine - with the stickers I think you can't go wrong either way.

One question: What size frame is this? I like how the virtue aero bottle exactly fits in the bottom corner of the frame "triangle". Is this true for any frame size? I thought I've seen pictures where there's a little gap to the seat tube...

Looks just like that on my medium. I think what you are seeing is that some mount the bottle in the second set of holes, which moves it up about an inch. Maybe easier to remove and install while riding? I have to jiggle mine sometimes going both directions.

I used a piece of aluminum that i had laying around and attached the cage to it with a single screw. I then zip tied the aluminum to the bar extensions. The rear of the cage is resting on the base bar and it too is zip tied.

I basically made my own version of the profile design mount and saved myself $30-40

http://www.runnersworld.com/...file-design-hc-mount

I prefer this method over just using zip ties, it feels much more sturdy and i have personally have better piece of mind knowing i won't be mid ride and lose a bottle.
hope this helps

Nope. And I've ridden them exclusively for the past 4 years, 3 different Transitions. I'm 165lbs now, have been upwards of 180.

Even without carbon paste I had no issues. But with carbon paste & proper torque, can't see how you'd have an issue.

Looks to me like most aftermarket 1 1/8" forks should fit. Most are pretty close in axle-crown length. A google search said that the rake was 45mm on smaller sizes and 43 on larger sizes.

Yeah the 40IS41 does look right to me.

If I'm not mad (definite possibility) but you'd better get a 1" fork, not 1 1/8.

Has anyone ever tried or replaced the standard brakes with something that actually has some stopping power? I have been doing a lot of hill training lately and I just don't feel like I have a ton of confidence during the descent. If you have had success could you post some pics of the replacement brake? also, do they make an adapter to use, lets say a dura ace brake or a tri rig (single bolt) on a 2 bolt style like the transition? I know it's not as aero but i think maybe i would just replace the rear.

Really nice bike. I am looking to get a similar bike/wheels combination and become a member of the mafia.

I have two questions for you:

1. How does the bike handles/feels in a hilly course?
2. Whats your experience with the S80 on the front? I am thinking doing a S80 rear - S60 front to cut the side winds. Any thoughts?

Thanks

1. I've never ridden a different TT bike so a comparison I can't do. The bike handles very well I think and I'm super comfortable on it in any conditions. I'm a seated climber in general (hardly ever stand) so climbing in aero works out for me
2. Again, never ridden a different size aero front wheel but on gusty days I can feel the S80 up front. I think the initial shock when I get blown a little is worse than it really is. Once I realize the wind is there it hasn't/doesn't bothered me too much. If I don't get blown around any I get lulled into thinking it's not going to happen. I'm 6' - 180 for reference. If you're comfy in aero I wouldn't recommend against running the S80 up front unless maybe it's super windy (which I might not have experienced yet).

The S80's are kinda heavy though but compared to Zipps what isn't. Can't say I feel it too much when riding them though. I swapped out the front for carbon/more aero bits and lowered it a bit. I like the ride better now and seem to be more comfortable

HTH

Instead of adding another post I thought I'd edit this one and show some pictures of my new bar set. 3T aura pro's with Carbon brake levers. Looks a whole lot better if anything :D

I had a chance to purchase a used Transition w/ dura ace setup for a very good price and I'm planning to change the cables. Reading through here it seems that it's either going to be easy or going to be really hard (maybe even have the frame shipped to Spez if cables get stuck). Are there cables that would work best with Spez Trans? Maybe Alligator, Jagwire, etc. etc. to make it easier? Or would it be better to take it to a local shop and have them do it even if it will probably cost more so I don't have to worry about it?

If the cables are stuck, most likely it's due to sweat or Gatorade. Try pouring very hot water down the cable entry holes. That should take care of it.

Thank you. I read about that method too, I hope I don't encounter any issues during recabling. Will post pix when everything is cleaned up properly :) It's one fast pony

not sure if you are replacing the cable and the housing or just the cables..... from my experience, i was able to remove all the cable and housing except for the housing for the front derailleur. just be careful when trying to remove it. good luck, great bike!

I'm planning to replacing the cables and housing, currently I'm able to pull the housing for the rear brake and RD and it moves fine but not the FD. If the housing for the FD isn't removable I'll just replace the cable then and oil it than trying to rip it off which might cause more problems with the housing breaking inside the frame. I'll plan on pouring hot water and maybe even a bit of soap to the cables and let it sit for a bit before pulling them out. Thanks.

Replaced and cleaned up the housing & cables but couldn't get the FD housing out since it felt tight or stuck so just replaced the cable. Will probably bring it to a shop next winter to see if they can do something about it. Just had it for a couple of weeks and it's fun and fast, my bike fitting went well too and when I get used to it I can probably get more aero. Got the helmet and can't wait to get aero-wheels for it.

This bike is broken in 3 pieces due to a car accident, getting a SHIV now, but I got love for all my bikes, old new and broken.

Ouch... I was looking at the Shiv and CD01 before getting the Trans. It was the price, setup and color that made me get the Spez-T (also probably coz Macca & Cancellara was riding them too). Enjoy your Shiv.

Albella:
I picked up a red frame like yours this weekend, and I have the same problem ill finish building it this week and I need snow to melt =)

Everyone:
How do you guys do your cable housing?
Do you have an extension or do you run just one cable housing all the way?
How does the cable housing for the front DR works? Is it a cable all the way to the exit or does it just go inside?
Is someone running osymetric rings?
Where do I get the little plastic that goes in the front brake/fork so it doesn't hit the frame directly?

A late entry. 2009 Transition Pro, with an Adamo TT saddle, Sram Red 165mm crankset, Zipp Vuka Aerobars, and Zipp 404/Powertap wheels. Had a professional fitting done last year, and just finished this year's Oceanside Ironman 70.3 (plus some shorter races). Love the bike!

Help out a Spez-T brother. I'm looking for a shop in the bayarea (east bay if possible) that can fix the FD cable because it is stuck right now. I don't want to force it out since it's working fine right now and I was able to change the cable wire to a new one but I want to get it fixed before my 1st 70.3 this August. Thanks in advance. Still loving the bike.

When you say the fix the fd cable bc it is stuck, do you mean the cable or the housing? the fd housing cannot be removed and it sounds as though you have already replaced the cable. If you are still having problems/issues pull out the cable and give it a good lube job and see how that works. hope this helps

I meant the housing is stuck and I can't get it out. It should be replacable right? Looks like there was a fix but not sure which shop around the area has experience on this http://forum.slowtwitch.com/...0derailleur;#3551220
