Live now....
The swim is underway... without wetsuits. A nice, long leg out to the first turn bouy has eliminated much of the scrum from a more bunched swim start. Nice looking conditions as we're 1:35 into the race...

I'm not quite sure about this strategy of having three swimmers across the front. The entire swim group seems rather broad as a beautiful heron gets out of the way there. Now we have four swimmers pounding away up there. you have to wonder...
I'll be looking for my friend Joyce Donaldsen of Elite Endeavors there- she is an Olympic Official at this event and will likely be visible in the transition area.
Still four swimmers there- it looks like the charito race from Ben Hur out there...

A big climb here out of T1 and we got a good look at that large blue matting surface the athletes talked about before the race.
It is critical for the back markers to "get on the bus" now if they want to really be a participant in the medals. Out of contact now is out of the race.
Whoa- quite a thrilling descent through this beautiful region. Ah!! Look at the wonderful patriotic display of Chinese flags there! Such unity! Very exciting.
A few riders here just trying desperately to get back into that group.
On the front, taking turns and rotating actually fairly well now.

Now you'd think there would be a bit of a battle to get toward the front as they re-enter the stadium during the laps here. It's imprtant to be at the fron t for the cornering, especially on these mats we've heard so much about.
Two groups now- that second group needs to work together to get back into contention. That first group- they need to do their work to keep the race exclusive...
Back out of the stadium for that big climb...

That's normal. It's the same with the CBC online coverage. They're just taking the live feed from the BOB (Olympic feed).

No big breaks. Some girls trying to bridge from the second pack to the lead pack. No real threats on the breakaways, such as they are. And if they ride like that, Fernandes is going to run away from them after T2.

Yes, very strange. A quick burst and she's drafting again, what's wrong with her?
If anything, I find the occasional "snap shots" and slow motion almost depressing, like somebody somewhere thinks they should do it to make this video a bit cooler but otherwise has no idea whatsoever about triathlon and thus cannot commentate, hence the only sound motorbikes and the occasional cheer from the side.
The multiple laps is great, however, and the transition area is cool.

It's huge- the chase group is simply out of contention.
I see Haskins in well with the leaders but Ertel... Where is she now, has she gone?
Now there seems to be some shirking at the front but they have to be careful or they will get these chasing riders back and the deck will get reshuffled again.
this woman in red here... number 7... seeems to be doing much more than her fair share. She must have a good runner i the group to work so selflessly.
And back in to the stadium with 51:30 on the clock for lap three.

Yes, 20 in the lead group there. I agree.
Now, let's loook at the places to attack here as we get down to a final set of three laps. With all the banter about the blue matting in the stadium it makes sense to launch an attack just prior to re-entering the stadium. A lone rider- or small group- can get over tha matting and up and over that little ramp more easily than a group of 20. That may be a factor.
If they did get away then they are out of sight of the chaser very quikly. The smart chasers would use the mega-screens around the course to watch the action up front though, as Hincapie failed to do in a prevous Olympic road race...

Ertel and Haskins there at the back. This seems rather deliberate on the part of the... Oh, big attempt by the Italina there to try to bridge. That will be quite a bit of wrok but a bold move.
that really blew the chasers up a bit.
Ah ha, you see Ertel there, very smart, stretching, saving her legs. Quite a cagey athlete.

what you are watching is the common feed from the cameras covering the event. Directors etc put the pieces together in real-time, and commentary is "overlaid" by each of the networks. For example, you will see EXACTLY these shots on CBC with voice overs. The commentators are watching the same thing you are on small monitors and are likely provided more detailed info on status of racers, speed etc. Same as phil and paul in the tdf. NBC, CBC etc do not have their own on-course cameras set-up, but use this common video feed in their production and broadcast with talking heads. I imagine they may have some cameras assigned to specifically follow some nation's stars, too, that get piped to the right network serving that nation.
I like it, since I find some commentators very annoying.

I wouldn't call her horrible. SHe is actually doing the smart thing, start the climb near the front, then fade to the back. It is a great tatic when the others are better climbers than you, or you just want to save your legs from smashing the hill.. I used to have to do this all the time...

Now, the Brazilian there on the S3...
Now see, she has some fine equipment for what she is doing there, notice the deep section wheels, a big benefit for here right now as is the aero frame. Here position is quite compact, a bit bunched, but you can;t argue with the results as she seems to have it in hand right now.

After 146 replays and almost three hours of coverage on him yesterday I think I could recognize him in a halloween costume from a block away.

I'm afraid that may be it Ertel... Awww. Too bad if it is. It really was quite a valiant day for her. She can hold her head high. I saw a Russian there going off to hospital.
Now, if Ertel takes some risks on the descent near the flag corps perhaps the spiriti of Chairman Mao will bring her back into contact.....
Hopefully she is carrying her little red book!

Yeah, weather manipulation will do that for you. If anyone didn't hear, the Chinese fired 1,000 weather altering rockets before the opening ceremonies. It rained just outside Beijing but never hit the stadium.

What they are yelling is Chi Oh(sp?) When I put on the first triathlon ever in CHina back in the late 80's, I asked my interpeter what that meant. She said the literal translation was add oil. I thought what the hell is that, but then she explained, that when you cook, and want to make the fire hotter and faster, you add oil.....So it just means speed up, or go faster in our language....

Now, for Snowsill, and mostly for Australia, this is adecent move. There is an Aussie in the chase ggroup of three who can react to either Snowsill being caught... if that happens... or to cover a move by the American... Bennett, so this is good tactically for the Aussies.
Now, I think Snowsill.... great as she is, got a bit excited here. She's a bit over wraught. Did you see her urgency in the aid station? the aid men are not allowed to hand off water. The athlete must fetch it. Snowsill seemed annoyed by that.
Bennett has got to be calculating here.... doing the math, how much of a gap can she close..... Is Bennett smiling or grimancing?

That's a fine question Eric, and one worth considering. Now we saw quite a blow-out here. Snowsill actually went wire-to-wire on the run so that speaks to not only her superb run fitness but also to the fact that she rode an intelligent bike leg... We did not see much of her.

what's with the US women and their bike skills and style?
Ertel spent the whole race at least a bike length off the wheel in front before finally getting dropped. Maybe if she could correctly hold a wheel the ride would've been easier for her.
Haskins had a water bottle mounted to her handle bars, i'm suprised this was even draft legal.
Bennett spent every hill on her aerobars grinding away in the middle of the group.
Not knocking them but I think it says a lot about being brought up doing predominately draft legal riding and cycle racing vs non drafting. The euros looked a lot more comfortable on the bike in terms of skills and confidence.

well she didn't have to do anything except come into T2 with the lead group and follow any moves that Fernandez made.
She was the fastest runner in the group, and the bookies' no. favourite to win gold by quite a big margin. (7/4 vs 3/1 for Fernandez)
She knew she could outrun Fernandez because she had done it umpteen times before and had only ever been outsplit once (IIRC) on the run by Fernandez in like 3 years of racing, so the pressure wasn't on her to do anything special.
I'm actually surprised Fernandez, as something of a bike specialist as well, did not try to make a break for it on the bike and gain some 20-30s o Snowsill going into T2. She must have known that if she came into T2 with Snowsill there was no way she was ever going to get Gold.

She's good - probably the best woman ever - but she's not THAT good. In the biggest purse race in history (Hy Vee 2007), she got dropped by the lead pack of swimmers, tried like hell to pull the chase pack back up to the leaders on the bike (never could), and eventually dropped out.

whats wrong with staying in the aero bars on the hills?
as I understand it, math suggests that is still the quickest way up most hills.

some random thoughts on last night:
(1) what a spectacular venue for a triathlon. between the glass-like water, to the pagoda, to the massive stands for spectators, to the flag wavers in formation to the technical bike course with a nice hill in it, it doesn't get much better than that. those water-level shots of the swim were particularly neat.
(2) that was one impressive run by snowsill from the gun. there are going to be a lot of guys tonight who wish they had her split.
(3) i was a little surprised that nobody tried to break away on one of the climbs knowing that snowsill and fernandes would easily out run them if a pack rolled into t2 together.
(4) ertel's riding tactics were bizarre -- get dropped on the big hill and then descend faster than anyone to get back to the pack. was she concerning energy on the climb thinking that the draft effects weren't that great on the climb?
(5) snowsill's tactics were perfect -- get out of the water with the lead pack and then sit in for most (all) of the bike. i barely saw her on the bike leg because she was so nicely tucked in for the draft. i can't say the same for fernandes bc it seemed like she was at the front for most of the bike does anyone know what some the bickering was about at the front? who was pissed at whom for not pulling?
(6) what was the deal with all the meaningless slo-mos? i didn't have commentary but they kept on showing slo-mos where normally something happens but nothing appeared to be going on. what was the deal with all the time spent on the chase pack over a minute back?
