I've been trying to track down some drive train noise on my road bike, and after swapping out cassettes and wheels, I decided to replace the chain. This is what the chain looks like. I ride my road bike when the weather is crappy, so this chain takes a beating. It also had 1400 miles on it, so was probably due to be replaced anyway, but this surprised me. I'm amazed it didn't blow apart on some hill. In addition to what you see, there were 3 or 4 other cracks. All of them were on the inside, which I obviously don't monitor as much as I should. I immediately checked my tri bike and all is OK, but if you're trying to diagnose some unknown creak, check your chain. I know I'll be watching mine a little more closely. And yeah, I know, the chain is filthy. That's an Ultegra chain, in case anybody was wondering. ================================ blog twitter
