what was the Dara Torres workout anyway Can't Post

Does anyone out there have some real, detailed information on what Torres was doing for her dry-land program? I have looked can't find enough detail to replicate such a workout. I found some video showing lots of stretching, core strength, multi-joint exercises, etc. I'd like to find a book/video of these exercises to "try out" this fall.

Here is what I have found over the past couple of weeks on resistance stretching (there is not a lot out there). I like the DVD I got this week and the stretches so far are great for my hips and shoulders ( I was looking to work on my hips-the shoulders are a surprise'

I have found some more information on Dara's routine if you are interested.

Has anyone else had experience or thoughts on resistance stretching?

go to innovativebodysolutions.com or stretchworks.net to see the folks who stretched Dara this year and for 2000 olympics and a few video clips on each site showing the stretching. the main site for resistance stretching and Bob Cooley who designed the system is meridianstretching.com

i have been doing this stretching since last fall and it really does make a difference. too many things that have been huge change/help to go into, but for sure it is not at all like traditional stretching. Bob Cooley's book is a good place to start although admittedly it is a bit thin on the science part of it. regardless, it can help.

pm me if you want more specific information.

skitrigirl are you just doing the stretching on your own? Have you gone to a stretcher to learn the stretches or have them work on you? I am curious as to if that is beneficial and how long the benefits last. I have only done the stretching on my own and I like the way it is working.

i get stretched weekly (Tom Longo in bay area). and he taught me how to self stretch based on my biomechanical needs, so i do that as well.

have been doing this for about 10 months and as a result some chronic issues with running and chronic shoulder problems have improved to be almost nonissue. doing IM WI next week so that will be the test, but i'm going into it much more confident and physically healthy than ever. have PR'd at some distances this year and i'm alot older than Dara! and i'm firm believer that it's alot to do with my body recovering better than in past from hard/long stuff.

i highly recommend getting at least one or two personal sessions with one of the resistance stretching trainers as they can show you correct way and help you with what is most important for your specific issues. i'm getting trained in the system and it takes some time to learn to deliver correctly so you want someone who is very good.

Re: what was the Dara Torres workout anyway [skitrigirl] [In reply to] Can't Post

skitrigril, thanks for the info. I see Tom Longo's name as part of the stretching DVD I am using from Bob Cooley's site. I have tried every therapy I can find to work on my hips and back over the years. The few weeks I have been doing resistance stretching at even the most basic level have given me hope that I can finally wring out some of the tightnesses and imbalances that are making my running (which I love) so unpleasant. Today I even had a spring in my running stride and my hips are much looser than they have been all year. I still have a way to go and I may try working with a stretcher if it isn't too expensive. Luther Cowden gave me a couple of names of stretchers who are about an hour away. How long do the effects of a stretching session last? Particularly if you are taught the important self-stretches for your tightnesses? Good luck with the training. I am sure you will be in high demand as more people learn about this!

Re: what was the Dara Torres workout anyway [TDF] [In reply to] Can't Post

the duration of effect from a single assisted stretch session can be long term depending on what is being treated. often when you have longstanding injuries there is fascia that is binding or scar tissue and even just breaking that down with stretching can make a big lasting difference. then self stretching will continue the effect. no question that the more you do the better it gets and it sounds like what you are doing on your own has made a big difference, so likely the hour or so drive to do an assisted stretching session would be a big help. if nothing else, the trainer can guide you to specific self stretches that will work best for you. for example, there are a couple ways to approach stretching the hamstrings on your own, or the hip flexors. and they can insure you are doing it correctly and to maximum effectiveness. but regardless, great to hear you are getting some good results from self stretching.

thanks skitrigirl, I might try to get an appointment in a couple of weeks. I'd like to get expert help. It is going well on my own, but I want to make sure I am doing all that I can and in the right way.

I know a couple swimmers on the team here who use that type of stretching - takes awhile to do but those who do it, like it, find it effective. Have been bugging my roommate to teach me how to do it! I need some of her 2:08 200 fly magic to rub off on me.
