weekend training in San Luis Obispo
Can't Post
Just back from 5 weeks in SF and already planning a return trip in 2 weeks. While there, I'm kicking off the IM09 season with a weekend training camp with a friend down in SLO. Does anyone have good recommendations for cycle routes, run trails or open water swimming? We haven't fixed the location, just looking somewhere midway between SF and LA.
Thanks much!

I don't know about open water swimming (we've had shark problems in the past down here and I'm not sure if you're allowed to swim in Lopez Lake), but we have amazing biking and running spots.
There's a list of some good bike rides here:

My standard long ride is to just head straight up highway 1. There's only a few stoplights. The rest of it is nice, wide shoulders. There's construction up by Harmony, so be careful there, but otherwise, you can easily put in any length of ride that you want to. If you want hills, go up highway 1 and hang right on Old Creek Road. That goes up quite a ways and connects to 46, which you can use to get back to highway 1 if you don't want to descend Old Creek.
As for running, Montana de Oro has lots of amazing trails:

I haven't even explored half of them!
Closer to SLO is Laguna Lake, which has lots of running trails, many of which go straight up and around the mountain.
Have fun training in SLO! Don't feel bad when you get passed by people in Cal Poly Triathlon Team kits. :)

I suggest you go on a bike trip down/up the Coast. Stay at cheap hostels along the way and ride as far as you can. Beautiful training along the 1.

For riding there are so many options. To keep it simple, just leave SLO north on Highway 1 and ride to the lighthouse and turn around and come back. It about 80 miles. A good part of the ride will be along the Pacific. There are nice places to take a break in Morro Bay, Cambria, Cayucos. It's a haven for cycling.

You guys drive around in your team kit?! :-)
Seriously, thanks for the tips. This is plenty to keep us busy.

For many team members, the team kit is all they have because cycling clothes are so ridiculously expensive these days and, if I've done my job, the team kit will be affordable. :)
Enjoy SLO!
