swimming & push-ups Can't Post

How many of you "good swimmers" (you know who you are-perfect flip turns & socket rockets) do push-ups? and how many per day?

I know this is not directly responsive to you post, but my off-season resolution is to do simple things well. To that end, I have started this program:
www.hundredpushups.com

One week down (I did B2B on 11/7, so my off-season is just starting), and so far so good. iPhone app is good companion and worth the couple of bucks.

If there is some downside to being able to do 100 pushups properly, for the life of me I cannot see what it is.

Good luck,
Paul

Oh! It's you! Thanks for the reply. I used to do 100/day and thought this might make me too stiff in the pool. And while I have you here, what about doing kick sets? does it effect your run? thanks

Re: swimming & push-ups [frenchfried] [In reply to] Can't Post

Shortly after I hurt my hip, I was very melancholy because I couldn't exercise. A guy in my office said "we could have a push up contest." I looked at him with my eyes wide and he said "no, really, lets go."

Shoes off. Down on the floor. I won and then just about started crying because it was so incredibly sweet of him to suggest and do with me, trying to get endorphins in my head somehow.

So the answer is: on occassion at the office. We do it for stress relief :-)

I do not do them on a regular basis because they make my pectoral muscles so sore and then it affects swimming. (If I did them on a regular basis, they probably wouldn't get so sore :-) I also avoid strengthening my anterior shoulders, as I have a strength imbalance front/back so I work on posterior muscles instead.

Long answer but another data point for ya.

You can do pull-up? How many? and one more question-What about kick sets? I've started doing them and it's seems to effect my running adversly. I can't think of many swimmers that are good runners with the exception of Jared. Thanks for info JYT Also, I have some info I need to PM you-later

Over/Under handed grip?

When i lifted a lot in college I did widegrip overhand pull ups behind the neck as part of my back routine. These destroyed my lats/rear delts in a wonderful way.

You are indeed correct.

I will rephrase: the best gym exercises for swimming are pullups and dips.

I hope everything's ok. Please write.

You don't need to do a lot of, or extensive, kick sets. I kick as part of warmup or for recovery. Breaststroke kick, either on your back or your front, is a great way to stretch your hips out a bit, too.

When I'm in shape I can do 20 pullups. I haven't been doing them lately.

Overhand. What you've described is exactly what you're after.

Re: swimming & push-ups [frenchfried] [In reply to] Can't Post

Excellent question. Push ups are great, if you do them regularly, and do them AFTER swim practice, and do them in limited numbers. Ten years ago I started doing 4 or 5 at a time. Now I do 12 at a time. Do more and it makes me sore and hurts my next swim practice.

a few questions for you Tigress, how many pushups won you that contest and what exactly is this front/back strength imbalance?

the long answer on question two would be good. thanks.

33.

An anterior/posterior strength imbalance is quite common in swimmers. Freestylists especially tend to have strong anterior shoulder muscles and weak posterior muscles. Trapezius, rhomboids, rear deltoids, lats... all things I wind up strengthening the gym and trying to get my shoulders back to normal :-)

Re: swimming & push-ups [tigerchik] [In reply to] Can't Post

everything is fine-just some news about your writing.
So, let me get this straight-you don't do kick sets like 400 flutter kick, ever? just breaststroke kick? why? do you think it limits your running? sure seems to.

And my husband, the thinker, wonders why we do them at all since we live in NE now-where I meet triathletes who have NEVER done a tri sans wetsuit. We are of the no kicking in wetsuit crowd, by-the way.

Re: swimming & push-ups [frenchfried] [In reply to] Can't Post

"Ever" is a strong word.

Kicking is most important for sprint freestylists, which I'm not. I've got a pretty mild kick... distance swim kick = willow legs. They balance out your stroke. The kick balances your stroke, rather. That rotation comes from your core, you're kicking from your hips, so that's what it's important for.

I kind of suck at kicking which is possibly why I avoid it. But I don't think long kick sets are necessary for triathletes.

Does not kicking limit my running? No. Injuries limit my running ;-)

writing! that's a happy thing to talk about. Did I tell you what my big project is? very related to other stuff we've talked about.

well thanks, at least i've got an idea of my own imbalances but it has nothing to do with swimming as i'm not even bothered with that just yet and have yet to seriously get into a pool but rather with my body in general, from the ground up. i know i could use arch supports. this imbalance that i have is affecting me all the way up to my neck and shoulders. even lifting wieghts i'm a bit off balance at the shoulders, as if the only strength i have is coming from my right side and not the left. and that goes for both my arms and legs. i'm restarting yoga (the in home version) so that should help but i thank you for your reply.

and good for you kicking his ass! sounds like an episode right out of the telly show The Office to me.

i take that back, the last time i was in a pool a few weeks back i was drifting off to the left with each stroke. if not for the lanes i woulda been like a dog chasing his own tail.

Re: swimming & push-ups [frenchfried] [In reply to] Can't Post

Pull-ups are the squat for the upper body.

To max the Army PT test I found a program where I was do straight sets of 40 - perfect - pushups every waking hour for three weeks prior.

Sounds like a bunch but I maxxed out 2 minutes of pushups and did 100 near perfect.

Check out the Armstong Pull Up Program: http://www.4mcd.usmc.mil/...Pullup%20Program.htm

To add to what some of the other posters mentioned above I add pushups, pullups, ring dips and muscle ups. Pullup bar in the bathroom - 20 every morning and 20 before bed whether I need it or not. Installed rings in the garage and hit them before heading out on runs. It's not going to make you an underwear model or a bodybuilder but you will definitely be a stronger climber on the bike and a stronger swimmer in the water if you add some pullups and ring work.

That's my $0.02.

LOL. He's a very nice guy, and genuinely concerned about my mental state when I'm not running. He also tries very hard to stay in shape- he bikes to and from campus and goes to the gym twice a week and goes for a walk on some other days- and was absolutely fine with my winning. He's not very competitive. He is also a person I highly respect, for a lot of things.
